I really appreciate all this debate about FOC and tuning setups. Whether one agrees or not, I think we're all better for being able to hear discussions and re-evaluate our setups. As long as we're doing what makes sense for ourselves and not blindly copying someone with different goals.
As a bow shop owner, I'm certainly happy to have J.Dudley speak out about the crazy trend of extremest in arrow weight. No to mention engineers like Dr. Park, Darin Cooper, etc.,whom can put it together with real mathematical sense. May common sense prevail. Thank you.
Another great podcast! Great questions and discussion topics with two people that speak from experience and that can back it up! Thanks for posting!
I hunt from the ground and tree stand. In the last 24 years I have hunted with bows from 31" to 34" ata. I never felt any of them were too long. They never caused a lost shot opportunity. I shoot a 33-34 ata bow way better than the shorter. I am sticking to that range for the foreseeable future. Where I hunt it would be a miracle to get a 50 yard shot. Everything is point blank to 35. However, If the opportunity arises, I want to be able to take the shot. As for point weight, I went up and couldn't be happier. I didn't do anything crazy, just added 50 grains. I love the 1.5 Sevr. Thing is a beast.

Does height play into it at all? I'm 5'8 and wouldnt mind getting a longer target bow but I don't want to get something absurdly long for my height I just want the best shoot able length without going too far

@@nicetryb0z0 got to a store check your price range try them get them set to you arrow tune than fine tune your bow.
I always enjoy your videos and learn a lot. Great job guys!
I've been down the heavy arrow rabbit hole tried many different setups for me I'm back down to my magical area 475/525 grain been that way for years
I absolutely love these podcasts! Specifically love the deep dive you’re doing on mastering the basics and using what has always worked vs just listening to all the “internet professionals.” I hope I get to shoot with you one day Dud! Take care 🤘🏼
Love your videos and your training sessions taught me archery - so much appreciated. Without mentioning names, I feel there is some confusion - his recommendation is 550 gr not 700 gr - unless buffalo etc. Perhaps over cooking FOC? I like good penetration especially on tough game like gemsbuck or wildebees (gnu). I personally shoot 550 gr arrows - 75gr brass plus 125gr fixed broadhead and love the penetration. I dislike too light arrows with 2 inch mechanicals that do not penetrate well - seen too much wounding. It is about momentum which is speed x weight - so scientifically both factors matter.
Not everyone can shoot like y'all with the poundage y'all shoot. That said I shoot 70/31 inch draw but I always recommend iron will or qad heads. 500 g at 276fps is perfect for me. Really good information and discussion from two experts.
I love your videos the ranchfairy has great videos starting with bare shafts and a bunch of different tip weights helps learn alot about form and arrow combinations that your bow shoots great pick a build for the job bare shaft then fletch best arrow flight
Another great discussion. I just tested my arrows on Chrono today. My Mathews Z7 at 70lb 27.5" draw and 425gr (100gr point) is getting 266fps for about 66.79 ft-lbs. I will order some 125gr points to test at 450gr but this seam to be around the sweet spot of weight for this setup.
It would be hard to find a properly spined hunting arrow that weighs in at 375 grains or less to shoot at 60 lbs lol. Thatbeing said, i got 2 easy passthroughs with a 55 lbs bow with 400 grain easton 4mm injexions. And QAD exodus deep six broadheads.... Both arrows had enough energy left to stick in a tree on the other side. I have since graduated to big boy equipment, 70lb Elite omnia, 5mm axis arrows, DIY bowshope with press and vise at home😂
Loving the series and high-level interviewees keep it coming! You started what the topic of is there anything left to get out of a bow when it comes to efficiency and if there's not the one thing I would love to see progress in is weight. To me it seems like we are heavier now than the flagships used to be 10 years ago. When are we going to finally get lightweight bows in the three pound range?
Mechanically, the efficiency of transfer is best between ~410 to 480 grains before the diminishing value of trajectory compromises the ability to accurately place an arrow if yardage isn't precise. Margin of error increases dramatically at that point for most average bow set-ups.
YES !!! Bows have gotten way to short ! Bring back the old days of 36 inch plus axle to axle hunting bows .
John, I would love to hear your definition of what it means for a bow to be "tuned". It has come up with other podcasts. I think in means something different to target guys vs hunters.

I expect the same out of my hunting bow as my target bow. In fact every bow you see me shoot everyday is my hunting bow. Only exception is arrow weight.

@@nockonarchery but what is it that you expect? Perfect bare shafts to a certain distance? A certain paper tear at a set distance? Fixed blades perfect with field points to a personally preferred distance? I am an over thinker and seriously asking. What does it truly mean for a bow to be "tuned".
Ok, I have a 25.5” draw length, 70# draw weight. I want hunt all North American animals and shoot at distance if needed (70 yards-ish). I have an idea of what my total weight should be, could you give me a range to see if I’m in the ballpark of what you would use? I appreciate all the info and really enjoy being able to hear all sides to get to a good informed decision.
About to start listening but it would be cool if you guys posted then old DD video content...

The only thing im thinking about the whole hatchet / knife comparison is the knife is probably 20-30 ounces, the hatchet is probably 32-50 ounces. A light arrow…440 grains- 1 ounce…. A heavy arrow 660 grains- 1.5 ounces. 1oz or 1.5oz. It’s really not that much weight. However, the flight trajectory is quite a bit different. Does this make sense?

50% more weight isn't a joke. Try getting shot with airsoft BBs of different weights. If you increase the weight a little, they hurt a lot more.
I have always shot a longer ata bow. 34,35 and 36. My draw length is 26in and now the short draw guys are getting squeezed out. All of the longer ata bows are starting at 27in and going up?? Why is that?🎯
@YoureSoVane

Efficiency. Draw length range requires a trade-off for efficiency. So you can be very fast at 60% of the population's draw length, or you can be kinda slow for 90% of the population's draw length. Speed sells.
Nuclear Engineers are best Engineers.
How much does height play into maximum ATA length ? Im 5'8 and want to start looking into a target bow but dont want to buy something absurdly long for my height if that will end up punishing me
