A new Podcast series in the heap of Podcasts on the internet. My intentions to do this is to recreate those hours from my college days when I used sit with my professors for an hour or two and discuss topics that would move from one to the other quite fluidly.
With that thought in mind, this episode features film critic Rahul Desai [from Film Companion]. He is one the best rising film critic in the business and among the ones I like to read.
Follow Rahul on Twitter @ReelReptile
Hope you enjoy it!

Somewhere in the 5th part Vinit Masram mentions about the mediocre filmmaking in Hindi Cinema from 1965-1980.Although I disagree that the movement of parallel cinema started in 1980(benegal had already started in 1974;MS Sathyu made Garam Hawa in '72) . Guru Dutt's untimely death in '65 according to me could be one of the reasons for lack of great cinema post '65.His death was sad because it dismantled the whole team(Dutt,Abrar Alvi,VK Murthy,Rehman,SD Burman,Waheeda Rehman,Sahir Ludhianvi).

Vinit's voice is not audible enough, not as much as Rahul's. Rahul have spoken more throughout the podcast so, it is really difficult to understand Vinit's voice in between during tge traffic.

Avatar was nominated ... So ? It was a great movie. It was an ambitious movie. If the story has some Indian sensibilities doesn't mean it is bad..

@@karthikeyas7900 Not for the world audience. The Indians had a lot of familiarity with the theme, with the sadhu type chants at the end and the hero falling in love with clan chief's daughter.. but the movie was good and it's rightfully nominated

Watch 'Last of the Mohicans' and 'Pocahontas' and see where those 'Indian Sensibilities' are borrowed from.

@@CinemaBeyondEntertainment the name itself is Indian.. Avatar. the sensibilities may be universal but they are overdone in Indian cinema and hence my point is that most Indians will have more familiarity to Avatar than the western audience...and Familiarity breeds contempt naturally.. I remember watching it in Imax in Mumbai and the audience were mockful at ending scenes of chanting where they are doing the body transfer.. But it's a very good film and deserves Oscar nomination .

Superb conversation. So many great movies to watch. Rahul Desai is so interesting when he talks about specific movies n Sundance. But severely boring first 30 minutes. Pls don't talk about the 'craft' of film reviewing again.

@@CinemaBeyondEntertainment because it's a job, like any other job. It is interesting to you and not many other ppl (in my opinion). One ends up elevating the hardships one faces and all the sacrifices one makes. Every single person faces these. It self-aggrandizing. And we've heard it before. You don't want to give numerical scores and u wish ppl wud stop forcing u to give them. You're frequently asked why u gave a higher score to one film n not the other. U are asked why u don't make films instead of just reviewing them. U are frequently trolled. We've heard it all. Noone knows or cares what is the difference between opinion peices n criticism. But, don't get me wrong. I love the output. Ur film criticism n analysis are brilliant and so is Rahul's work.

So what is wrong if someone who goes through it want to express it. Timestamp is there to skip such sections for people who don't want to listen to that. I am not going dictate what people should and shouldn't express on my show. I don't even edit anything out. You find certain sections boring, skip it. You find the person boring, skip the episode. Let's not tell people what to talk and not to talk about when you are getting it all to consume for free.

@@CinemaBeyondEntertainment point taken - about the time stamp. The part about it being 'free' was unnecessary. It's ironic that a film critic/analyst is touchy about ppl commenting on his work

By Touchy if you mean shutting down unnecessary remark on people's willingness to talk any topic, then yeah, I will gladly be touchy about it. Make a counter argument instead of telling people not to talk about a specific thing. That way, a discourse can take place.
