A new Podcast series in the heap of Podcasts on the internet. My intentions to do this is to recreate those hours from my college days when I used sit with my professors for an hour or two and discuss topics that would move from one to the other quite fluidly.
With that thought in mind, the first episode features film critic Sucharita Tyagi [from Film Companion]. She has established herself in the world of Hindi film criticism through her distinct style and content.

Regarding the Sacred Games' repetitive writing, I think if someone follows most of the recent Netflix shows especially the ones where they have put in a lot of money, or say someone watched the interviews with the writing team of it, can see it coming before the series starts. Varun Grover mentions it many times that Netflix have a lot of data, and they give you "advice" on how to make the show more bingeable. They have used their data to optimize for more binge watch and in that there is little room for creativity in terms of structure of a show. You see the same in the recently released Selection Day.

@@CinemaBeyondEntertainment Imo it's going to happen more and more too. Netflix(and most other streaming platforms) have implemented a lot of tech into figuring out what makes people binge a show. There was a recent story of Netflix dropping a few of its tools which were designed to make children binge. Sooner or later this is going to come to movies too. :(

I have been following both the channels Film Companion and Cinema beyond entertainment for sometime now. Frankly, I do not like Sucharita's reviews. When I look for a discussion on a movie, I look for something that I might have missed as a regular viewer - an insight, a fresh new perspective, a lens I could have never imagined. I find those in Vinit's analysis, Rahul Desai's and sometimes in Anupama's review. Sucharita's reviews are like a friend who came out of a movie and is sharing (blabbering) opinion. May be it is by design, but I will prefer a well thought out analysis over feelings for a movie. She is a wonderful human being and given her radio background, I can understand what is she trying to do and hence the title - not a movie review. But I think for a platform like Film Companion where you have a Rangan Bhardwaj - we could do better.

Cant complain. The feeling of Realization and Guilt for Overwhelmingness has been Constant with most Imtiaz ali's so called Classics that I've seen throughout the years. He is a clever man as in how to present a Story, it's set for an audience. *Tamasha* Was first of it's kind targeting the corporate sector telling them What they should have done 5 years or so, back, that can still be done and get your life mended with(utterly bullshit). Now you go and Make a film with the same motivation and it will seem an oversimplification for the corporate sector. *Rockstar* when it came out, people still weren't familiar with such portrayal of depression through a Romantic relation, and so it hit a certain audience including myself. But now, that formula is All over the place in Indian(Hindi) films:- seperation from love Causes mental challenges, death is certain at the end for one of The two romantics..and hence, an expected hit Romance drama. Now you think of such a Story, and it seems a premature portrayal of Mental health and Depression. Although, Rockstar isn't half way as bad as Tamasha. I was a Rebel standing in the way of hate and Imtiaz ali for a Long time in my teenage, but with growth, I have kind of held loose, and let the opinions pass... It does come to concern now, after also Revisiting all his best acclaimed work over the years... He is indeed Overfed, or to be a bit harsher, overrated. Now that the film industry has finally bit by bit come into it's right place, considering more Independent brilliant cinema over commercial hits, and also Revisiting better creators like Anurag Kashyap from the past....directors like Imtiaz ali are losing their Essence.

I agree with you on Raazi. My roommate was constantly telling me how great the film is, how Alia was amazing and not to mention the critics dying over its 'greatness'. It was just *not* a good spy movie. It was more like a romantic star crossed lovers movie hidden in the package of a spy film. There was next to no threat. She was practically alone in the house all the time, free to do all the spy-esque things she wants to do. It's like the elements are there but the execution is poor. Also, just my opinion: I really like character driven stories. But the characters in Raazi were so bland. You know who is good and who is bad just after a few scenes. There were no shadow-y people. The only interesting point I felt was when, at the very end *SPOILER* the main lead's trainer and mentor decides to kill her (more like blow her up) so that she won't get captured and spills the beans. I felt like he became the most interesting character to me at that moment. When Alia confronted her, the way he replied, I was thinking "someone make a movie on this dude! I want to know what his story is, what did he go through, what has he witnessed in his life as a spy??" Btw Alia was OK for me. But definitely not good enough to play a spy of that level. She is pretty...idk predictable? Well, that was just my take. I guess I expected a bit too much from the film and the actress. Still, you can watch it one time.

Oh man, till I read your comment even I thought raazi was a good movie but I guess it's not that great. You've made really good points, have to agree I found Alia's character quite boring, she's a good girl who obeys her father. So I wasn't able to determine if Alia's acting was okayish or it was just the character that was meh. But it was quite entertaining and their love story was also kinda cute.

Sucharita works for film companion, and has to quickly give out a review without spoilers so she's very restricted. So you can't really blame her. Plus her reviewing style is drastically different from his.

I'd like to add something to what Vinit said about Raazi. Raazi was unable to display the haunting experiences of a spy because of its misleading narrative and kid glove treatment of Sehmat's husband and in laws in the film. The inner conflicts of the spy was shown in a very laid back manner and the objective (of the spy) became warped during the course of the film. It almost felt that even if the spy was caught her husband would have taken her side and assured (or at least tried to) her safety. Hence, the haunting experience was completely diluted. Further, I completely agree that Vinit should not review movies. Vinit has an academic POV towards film making and cinema in general unlike the usual reviewers who restrict their conclusion to just rating the movie on a scale of 1 to 5 or 1 to 10 and thereby giving absolutely no insightful details concerning the film. Although I don't always agree with Vinit's POV but it cannot be denied that he in the true sense goes beyond the entertainment quotient of a cinema and gives the viewers an interesting insight into the objective or technicalities of the cinema or the film maker.

@Krishna Chaitanya while there is, sometimes, seemingly a tendency to go too far attaching deeper meaning to something, one is totally allowed to interpret it the way it makes sense to them, even if it was intended by the creator. That's the very subjective nature of any art. Whether you subscribe to that interpretation or not is up to you.

Regarding the "need" for Mowgli to exist when Jungle Book is already here, actually it was in development alongside the Disney movie by WB cause they wanted to adapt the book which is darker than the disney animated version. Made some sense on paper but then it took way too long to make so WB dumped it on Netflix instead of putting it on screen and everyone seeing the box office failure.

There's a Bangladeshi Novel called "Rabindranath has never came here" from 2013, which is very similar with the movie RAW(2017). You can read the novel if you are interested. Very intriguing thriller and phenomenal storytelling. Srijit Mukherjee, a renowned bengali director, is making a web series based on the novel.

Finally I found someone who agrees with me on Raazi. Although I really liked Meghna Gulzar's handling of the depiction of patriotism, specially in this time of extreme jingoism everywhere, Raazi somehow fails at the fundamental level of being a spy thriller. First of all, the film needed to be much taut in the pacing department. Second of all, Sehmat's character (and other supporting characters as well) did not have enough shades for me. This has a lot to do with Alia's performance. It lacks subtlety. Something that I think Vicky Kaushal had although he didn't get that kind of acclaim that Alia did. I would never understand people who go around praising Alia like she is the second coming of Smita Patil. She is a decent actress and I like the way she chooses her projects, she is versatile. But that's that. I guess there are perks of coming with a certain last name after all. P. S: Discovered your channel a while back. It's so refreshing to see someone who truly loves cinema as an art form.

SPEAKING AGAINST RAZZI I HAD FELT LIKE A LONELY MAN IN ANTARCTICA . TILL I FOUND VINIT'S VOICE HERE :) Following was what I posted on my Facebook page : Razzi is a series of cliches well-shot . The characters are devoid of any conflict even though the situations are excruciatingly exacting! The protagonist is transformed in the space of few weeks from squirrel-saviour to man-crusher with not much difficulty except a little trembling and a cold shower after she is obliged to accomplish her maiden murder . The transformation of an ordinary girl is shown by just a few flicks of lamp light. The plaintive cry about the nihilism implicit in a war, comes but at last by the protagonist which seems quite abruptly appended because during the entire course she had no qualms in doing what she was doing , she had consented to everything that had happened throughout . The screenplay is confused between making an argument for the sacrifices of all sorts for the sake of the nation and the argument for humanity which recognises ultimately the futility of divisions which compromises a basic human instinct of loyalty to a fellow human. And even the claim made by the movie to be a spy-thriller is preposterous ! It's just as good as a prime time TV serial. The song Aye Watan is melodious but Gulzar as a lyricist seems to be holding a mirror trying to realise his own past look . His line " fasale jo kata jayen untie nahi hain /betiyaan jo byahi jaaye murati nahi hai ." seems quite laboured and self-consciously earthy . I am reminded nostalgically of the fluency and wholeness of the lyrics of beedi jaliyele or his still older beauty thodi si zameen thud aasaman with his organically moulded rustic smilies. ( Why so much on Gulzar ? The review is proportional to his stature ! ) The camera is more comfortable capturing inanimate objects . Like the best shot in the movie is of the cavalcade of cars passing by the side of lake in a dark night , returning home with the bride. When I see the passing reflections of headlights in the still waters of the lake I am reminded of Bresson who said that to create is to tie new relationship between persons and things which are and as they are . The light , darkness, path to home , a beautiful anticipation , the sleeping silent lake , the bride and the bridegroom all are implied ( not consciously though ) as they are intertwined . All actors ( all except the father in law of the protagonist ) have sincelrey tried , as far as trying can be possible on the basis of poorly etched charters in the script. Acting can animate a good writing but how can it substitute the writing itself ? Similarly the director cannot direct if the script is not clear in it's implicit and explicit meanings . At last to say the best thing about this poor show is that it is better than the other present offerings like Omretta , 102 Not Out and Beyond the Clouds and Hitchki ( Though Hitchki on many levels is a better movie ) . * If anyone thinks that this attempt at reviewing is like a venting out my frustration, he or she is absolutely right .
