You can replace the string with a piece of lightweight metal rod so long as you make the attachment point to the trebuchet arm a pivot. Then re engineer the projectile basket, preferably out of something magnetic too. Then finally redo the projectile magazine so that you feed from the bottom , but it pushes up to the topside and at the front, right into the reset position for the projectile basket. That should make for quick one handed single motion reloading of the projectile. Also for additional energy, you could add a second set of axle wheels on the exterior of the truss or third or fourth etc. Lastly, for aiming a set of peephole sights off to the side that are aligned for impact at various distances. Cool project. Would love to see the refinements in a part 2!

Great! I love the trebuchet. Built one myself once. It was about 30" high, and with a coffee can full of rocks for a weight, it would launch a tennis ball 40 feet. It was fun and safe for the kiddies to watch. I used a denim sling with super glue around the edges instead of a sewn hem. Worked great. Released reliably. Your flywheel design is my favorite; but the mini is pretty cool. Let me suggest that you add a rifle stock, or another handle in the back so you can steady it better and improve accuracy. It might be fun to experiment with a sight of some kind. Keep on making the entertaining videos!

Dude, I'm totally stealing this for a D&D character sometime! It's like the Drow Hand Crossbow of siege weapons! Can it do significant damage? No... but can it deliver a small but potent alchemical payload? Hell yes it could! XD On a more serious note, the stats aren't that bad, but I would suggest comparing it not to a full-sized trebuchet, but to a medieval crossbow. Compared to a 900-lb draw weight medieval crossbow with state-of-the-art cranequin reloading, this thing does, off the top of my head: ~15% range; ~1.2% projectile KE; and at least 300% faster reload speed. ;) Compared to a similarly-styled hand-crossbow? I dunno, I don't know that anyone has made one yet in the real world. New project idea? Considering it isn't yet fully optimized, and you're not pushing the materials to their limit yet, or using optimized materials, I'd say it has promise! As... a totally silly 500-years out-of-date handheld ranged weapon, of course.

When I was 12 I made a miniature handheld catapult, that could fit in the palm of your hand, out of popsicle sticks hot glued together. It used a ton of elastics (never counted how many I used) held by 2 anchors on both ends and wound around the arm until the elastics started to reach their maximum stretch. The tension usually started to bend and break the frames after awhile. The arm was too weak to draw back without breaking so I used half inch dowels for them instead of popsicle sticks. It was capable of launching small rocks like a football field away. Could take out an eye and gave my hands many injuries when something malfunctioned, like the elastics snapping or the anchors spinning or breaking. The strongest one I made was also the smallest because I could wrap each elastic around the anchors 2 times, doubling the power

Using magnet as ammo holder in a magazine is genius, it may even be used on real firearms allowing some interesting reloading action. Does anyone know if this is already utilized by some weapon manufacturer?

Most bullets are not magnetic as far as I know. I seem to recall lead and brass are common.

Just no. Spring loaded magazines and repeating actions are far better solutions than magnets, elastic bands and string.

The Firearms Act 1968 says you need a licence if it can launch a missile with kinetic energy of more than one joule at the muzzle of the weapon. Tom had this at 0.58 joules, but I'm not sure whether this applies to a trebuchet.
