NVC turned my marriage around from heading to divorce to cultivating a deep, loving, connected bond with myself and wife. I love your distilling the technology that the late Dr. Rosenberg dedicated his life to sharing. Best wishes in all of your endeavors, Brian!

Brian, thank you so much for summarizing NVC so thoroughly! I studied NVC as a life and wellness coach and appreciate these 12 minutes so very much, for all my clients who do not have the time or impulse to read the book and study it, but need its benefits!

Good stuff!! I've been studying and practicing NVC for over a decade and it's quite humbling for me because, as Marshall Rosenberg said, "it's simple but it's not easy". It's simple because what you're doing is seeing every human being as equal to yourself - like when you were also driving in the crosswalk a few days later & remembered all your judgments of the other guy who did the same thing. We all have the same human needs and we all do things that are not in alignment with our truest values at times. And it's not that easy because we're un-learning a lifetime of culturally-supported blaming & judging others (and ourselves) for our experience; movies, TV shows, talkshows, politics, trying to convince our friends about who is "right" and who is "wrong" when we're upset, thoughts of guilt & shame. Really nasty stuff that spirals into many tragic expressions of our needs - tragic because all of those things we do are an ATTEMPT to speak to our needs. NVC is a complete 180 turn from what we were systematically taught. There's still a pull in me to garner my vitality & cultivate thoughts of being worthy & mattering from the fight energy that lives so deep in me. I think NVC is about living with your heart before your head. NVC has shown me that self-empathy & self-compassion are possible. Such a huge relief to stop beating myself up...something I was also taught to do. I'm so glad you talked about people stimulating/contributing to our feelings but never causing them. That's huge!! In fact I think it's everything when you truly want to come out of the victim role. We often say things like "it annoyed me", or "he made me feel angry" but that's simply not true or accurate. That's where the observation comes in: what did you observe? And rather than wondering how that MADE you feel, simply ask yourself how you feel when you think about what you observed. That may seem like a small point but that process unravels a whole world of responsibility and values. Brian I'd like to offer some support re teaching NVC. At one point you said you "felt threatened/it was the feeling sense I had/not that it wasn't reasonable". * It's not that it was/wasn't reasonable - it's just simply not a feeling. You can feel scared (like you mentioned), but you can't feel threatened. Again this might seem nitpicky but it's a crucial point when teaching NVC. There's a list of words called 'thoughts disguised as feelings'. I have some great resources for you if you'd like them. : ) In this moment I'm a little worried that you'll hear that as a criticism. I hope not : ) Feeling gratitude for you for making this video!

Great job breaking down NVC!! It’s so much more complex than most people assume upon first learning about it. But you did an amazing job explaining the most important parts of it! Wish Marshall was around to see more and more people learning and adopting NVC methods..

It is so wonderful to see it broken down. I'm often trying to find a video to introduce people to NVC and this fits the bill very nicely. Reflections: Nonviolent Communication can be a life-pursit that can be developened and unpacked for years. I have been going to an NVC meetup every week for 2 years and I still walk away completely blown away by new information and ways to connect, empathize, listen, etc. Unlike a lot of other books I've read, it is an intro to a completely different way of life and how one relates to the self and others. I could say that about a lot of books I suppose, but NVC has a framework of practice groups, meet ups, seminars, retreats, and conscious communities around the world that make it a very real part of every day life. The book can be good in and of itself, but it can also be the doorway to a new world. I easily confuse what I feeling is. Even "threatened" or "unsafe" might be seen as judgments of the other person's behavior. If I were to say "I felt threatened," they other might hear, "You were threatening." They might fit better as needs. I only say so in the pursuit of my own accurate understanding of NVC. Even as a need, I'd need to be careful on my delivery so it doesn't come across as an assessment of how safe or unsafe their driving was. I'd want to highlight that they may have been completely safe but my needs for safety are simply different, and not "better" or more accurate. An example of where I'm at with my practice and how I need to navigate NVC for my particular brain structure: I might say that my need in your situation was more connection with the driver. I might say, "I was needing more connection with you," It would help me stay away from judgments. I may have been feeling afraid because I was not having connection and mutuality with the driver. Requests are sometimes tricky they should be specific, doable and time-bound. In this scenario I might have my request fulfilled simply by the driver listening to me. I might just thank the driver for meeting my needs for sharing and consideration. Or if the driver was long gone, I may thank myself for checking in and connecting with my feelings and needs instead of becoming upset or stressed out.

Ok here's the scenario I'm going to lay out for you. I just received an order. I started working on putting it together. I've only been working on it for 5 minutes. Here comes the manager and starts yelling at me that I've been working on it for over half an hour and he wants it to get done now. 1) observation - manager doesn't know that that I've only been working on it for 5 minutes instead of 20. 2) I feel scared, stressed, and under pressure. 3) I have a need to be respected at work and work without stress 4) Would you please calm down and let me finish this order without any extra stress.

Thank you yet 'threatened' is a judgement & so is 'reasonable' To assume the Driver was not aware is also a judgement & I dunno about driving •below• the speed limit though maybe the request would be to obey the Law. Sheeeet I dunno. I don't speak this Language. Anyways.. Pedestrians always have the right of way & cars are not to be in the crosswalk unless its the cars turn?? As I said I dunno I don't have a license though as a Pedestrian as that famous line goes Ive often thought: LOL "Im WALKING here"
