PMDG 737-700 for MSFS - Tutorial 7: Taxi

Hi all, I'm a PMDG tech team member and real life 737 pilot. Here is my next video in the 737 tutorial series.
Note: I have skipped over the pushback and startup tutorial before releasing this one as I wanted to redo it to a better quality. It's going to be available later today or tomorrow.
In this tutorial we will cover the taxi from the pushback position to the runway. I will explain some basics about taxiing the 737, some speed limits and the review of the takeoff briefing we do during taxi to refresh our minds with our exact plan.
The video has been taken using a pre-release beta version of the product, so you can expect to see some issues that will be fixed before release. There's no need to point those out as the team will be aware and working on them already. For example the textures on the outside of the plane on this particular livery in use are not yet up to the quality that PMDG aims to achieve in the final release version.
If you like my videos please consider a small donation as it's taking a lot of time and effort to create these.

These tutorials are not designed as absolute beginner tutorials. It is expected that the viewer already has basic experience with airliners and knows the basics how to operate an aircraft.
Instead these tutorials will focus on the 737NG as an aircraft and the particularities of how to operate it.
I'll be closing this introduction by saying that I'm not a professional KZreadr or Streamer quite yet and these videos are my very first that actually get more than a hundret clicks. I have never before created such content so bear with me for doing beginner mistakes.
I record straight from the sim without any fancy stuff going on in the background.

    Great video as usual so many thanks again. You mentioned a speed limit of 5kn for contaminated surfaces. I guess that means snow and ice but does contaminated mean other stuff too like sand or dirt?

  • @A330Driver

    @A330Driver

    There's one very important word in the flight crew training manual, which basically tells you to be reasonable. If you have any doubt about the speed at which you can taxi, then there is no doubt: Reduce the speed further. Of course you could google the exact definiton of a contaminated surface, but always keep in mind: If you see something you don't like you have the full authority to do something about it. Only because you might legally go 30kt on such a dirty surface it doesn't mean that you have to.

    I came to these videos because I was getting the takeoff config warning on every takeoff. Though you did not explicitedly mention it, I did figure out what it was (might help others): For the PMDG B738 for P3D the manual instructed to arm spoilers for takeoff [and landing, naturally] if I recall correctly, to assist the RTO. I had this procedure down to my subconsciousness. With the video I saw that arming spoilers for takeoff is a thing you don't do in the B737 for MSFS anymore. That got me curious. On my next takeoff I did not arm the spoilers and decided I WILL reject it, to see whether a) that fixed the takeoff config being wrong and b) the spoilers would automatically deploy or if you had to think about it if you reject a takeoff. Lo and behold, no beepings and aircraft DID deploy the spoilers automatically (as indicated by the amber light and outside view) despite not arming them. I was amazed. xD Now I'm super curious... Can you explain the difference as to why it's not done with this model? I assume some extra automatisation? Curious about the "technical" background. This is why study level aircrafts are awesome. Even if you studied a previous version (and different model) in another simulator, once you get another thing (despite both being Boeings) you have to RELEARN some minor things. Other than that, I could just run the flows of the P3D version and it worked on first try. :D I knew about the hidden clickspot for TOGA, but the hidden clickspots for flap settings blew my mind. Good stuff! xD TL;DR: If plane beeps annoyingly and red "takeoff config" light goes on, make sure spoilers are NOT armed, whilst having autobreak on RTO and flaps green lit.

  • @A330Driver

    @A330Driver

    2 жыл бұрын

    The spoilers are never armed for takeoff in the 737 (and I don't think in other Boeing models either). If any P3D manual mentioned so then it is absolutely wrong.

    The real 737 FMC doesn't have such an option. We still need to conduct the raim check before the flight. In fact our flight planning system does it for us, we can check it in the flight documents for each particular flight.

    The takeoff config warning primarily checks for the speedbrake, flaps, trim and parking brake. A common flight sim error is to arm the speedbrake before takeoff. DON'T do that, else you'll get the takeoff config warning.

    @@PerfidiousLeaf To be fair, quite a bit. Even the 20 million $ full flight simulators can't hold up to the real aircraft. Of course, numbers are mostly correct, it's more of that feeling that's just missing if you know what I mean. I wonder what it must feel like to fly this with a 100% replica (including force feedback) of the real 737 yoke and how that compares to the full flight simulator. I always say that flight simulations are very good to learn the theory behind something, but not its actual handling skills. There's a good reason why new cadets, before they can fly the real aircraft with passengers and after they have completed the type rating in the sim, have to do touch and go training in the real airplane after all.
