PM Sir Keir Starmer holds news conference following first cabinet meeting
Sir Keir Starmer is summoning his cabinet later this morning for a meeting to establish their agenda after the election win.
Following the gathering, Sir Keir will hold a news conference - the first since he was elected as prime minister.
It means he will likely face questions from the press as the country's leader for the first time, rather than as leader of the opposition.

Marvellous. Like many other comments here: a breath of fresh air to see an adult in charge. From the start, it's obvious the PM is able to engage with people. He talks to them - not at them. Starmer actually answers questions with honesty and with actions and solutions - while being realistic.
Finally someone explaining his work. Not just book talk!

Starmer's Big Lie is that the reason Labour lost the 2019 general election was because of its policies, a lie which is also told by the Tories. Starmer lied because he is the person who insisted Labour support a second referendum. As 70% of Tory constituencies and 62% of Labour constituencies voted to leave the EU, his insistence that Labour support an action opposed by a supermajority of voters guaranteed defeat for Labour at the 2019 election. Starmer tells the lie that Labour’s policies lost the election because he is responsible for the defeat and he needs a scapegoat to avoid being held to account for keeping the Tories in power.
Can anyone imagine Boris Johnson thinking like this? The first thing he did when he won the 2019 election was to find a donor to pay for his holiday.

Feels like the grown ups are finally in charge! 👍🏼
Very optimistic
Starmer has done more to instil honesty, professionalism and accountability into top line politics in less than 24 hours than the Tories have managed in 14 years… 👏👏👏
It feels like we have won a long war? I hope we have, I hope we can trust to have hope and to never feel betrayed again.
It’s great to hear that all their plans are fully funded….. means no tax increases for us!

Impressive i hope all those in his party are on board and do deliver. Also hope there is real change from the awful politics we saw played out so far.
He’s so much more impressive now he’s got a real job. Here, and yesterday’s speech at no. 10. I think he never quite knew how to handle the weird role as leader of the opposition. This is very good start.

The money is there, government via the Bank of England can create it. As long as there is a need, as long as it can control inflation by removing excess from the right places (greater tax on the rich) there are no serious consequences to this. In fact the benefits could be huge with poverty reduced dramatically, infrastructure across the country vastly improved (including NHS, schools) along with major economic boost. People able to spend money means a greater economy, people with a lack of money reduces the economy. If only politicians understood it's not rocket science.

Its not just tax money thats needed , money that circulates in the economy , needs to stay here. Uk looses £100 billion to american companies , just think at the grass root uber , and just eat. Our politicians need to understand this and defend the revenues generated here.@@kevbrown2532
As an outsider with an interest in (but no in-depth knowledge of) UK politics, this press conference feels like such a relief and such a turnaround - a professional look, a serious and polite tone, a realistic approach, no populist hyperboles, and actual answers to the questions asked. A good start if ever I saw one.
Because he led the CPS does not mean we need less accountability from the CPS, the police and the judiciary. We actually need more as they are not competent.

Good start. Hopefully this return to openness continues even during the difficult times ahead
He just gained 5 points in the polls.
I don't know what he can do in the first 100 days or even 1 year, except one very important thing. He can tell the truth about everything. The NHS, Cost of Living, Housing, Pensions, Taxes, Water companies, Migration and Europe. Do not pretend that there are easy quick fixes and do not try to blame people who have little or no impact (ie. immigrants). Basically, do not treat us like idiots.
Although i didn't vote and am a conservative, being a veteran and expat currently in germany and of anglo northern irish lineage, . I do like the way he say's all four nation's..

He knows confidence in government has been waining within the British people for many years. He's got a fantastic opportunity here and seems to be a fantastic prime minister.
