    Pluto's features were given the best names, Cthulhu macula, for the dark spot, and Tenzing Norgay definitely deserves getting the highest mountains named after him.

    The team behind New Horizons has referred not only to Pluto as a planet, but also to Charon as planet. And why not? It's not as though Jupiter and Mercury are by any means the same kind of object. The only reason they are both called "planets" is because they were grouped together under that name for several thousand years before the IAU was a twinkle in Belgian eyes. If the IAU wants to make it a technical term within their own jargon, that's their problem. No one feels any particular need to use the words force, or work, or power, or action only in the way physicists use those terms. But the smarter people -- and I'll put the New Horizons team in that category -- know that to the public, a planet is a big, interesting place. The sort of place that should be explored with funding from the government. So sometimes they call these places "planets", and sometimes "worlds". Those who want to call them dwarf planets can enjoy a dwarf budget.

  • @graham1158

    @graham1158

    @@christosvoskresye Yeah, no. You don't get it at all. They didn't declassify Pluto just for shits and giggles. Pluto just doesn't fit within the modern definition of the word "planet". A planet must fulfill these criteria: 1. It is in orbit around the Sun. 2. It has sufficient mass to assume hydrostatic equilibrium (a nearly round shape). 3. It has "cleared the neighborhood" around its orbit. Pluto fails at point 3. Pluto is not gravitationally dominant, which is why you can't classify it as a planet. "The only reason they are both called "planets" is because they were grouped together under that name for several thousand years before the IAU was a twinkle in Belgian eyes." Wrong. Jupiter and Mercury are grouped together, because they fulfill the 3 criteria. That's it.

    ben gray Actually, the BBC series is five episodes, too. The series is a BBC-PBS coproduction. Both the BBC and PBS financed it. It was produced by both entities, and both BBC and PBS will get the full presentation. However, PBS has chosen to fold its presentation into Nova, a popular series, in order to make sure it gets a large viewership.

    Great show it's interesting to see about the planets. I just ordered my poster for the wall. If someone took one of them posh cameras to the moon and zoomed in on the other planets could see new stuff. I think life is out there somewhere just not found it yet. There is life on KZread tho😂

And I was also taught that Pluto was the night planet, however like what often happens in science, things changed based new evidence and it's been confirmed that Pluto is not a planet. It's a dwarf planet as it's too small for it to count as a regular planet like ours, mars or venus. Not taking anything away from that small little world. Its a beautiful and fascinating little world, but it aint no planet.
