    A good photographer doesn't need to ask the person anything as they already know what will make a good photo based on the subject. Meaning they can easily identify a subjects best angles and exploit their angles as quickly and efficiently as possible so as not to waste too much time. What the subject identifies as where thier insecurities lay is wholly irrelevant as a good photographer will know this by just looking at them.

    The whole "identifies as plus size" convo has me laughing bc so many people try to tell me "oh you're not plus size!" when that is literally the clothing size I wear... but then when people say identifies everyone is suddenly like "it's not an identity you either are or you aren't!" so like. Which is it. Am I in the wrong because I consider myself plus size even though I don't look it (when I literally wear plus size clothes) or are they in the wrong for calling it an identity. Because people sure seem willing to gatekeep it as an identity when a hourglassy "normal-looking" person says that they wear plus-size clothes.

    The phrase "i identify as..." has become one of those most vilified phrases for really dumb reasons. Even i got this gut reaction when he said it but i had to check myself. People have a hard time receiving the fact that people's identities change all the time. Most of us have a hard time with uncertainty and this fact makes the uncertainty bigger. The answer isn't to make people change their identity less. The answer is to learn to be better at handling uncertainty. Also we in the US have a history of hating people who aren't like ourselves for one reason or another, it's been a problem since our independence from Great Britain, we're slowly shedding it but it'll take time. I personally don't think we'll ever get to a point where everyone is accepted as they are in the present moment, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't try.

    @@niharikamenon-iz8xu I think you missed the point that the original commenter was making. The irony is that a doctor, who IS supposed to care about you and your health, will not listen to you or your concerns. There are many people who voice concerns about their health, body, and comfort that are often flat out dismissed by their doctor, so the issues persist. A photographer/stylist is more likely to listen to their client and what they want/need for their satisfaction than a doctor who is supposed to keep their patient satisfied with their health.

  • @CabbageKin_

    @CabbageKin_

    Жыл бұрын

    @@niharikamenon-iz8xu You misunderstood what I said again. A doctor often DOES NOT LISTEN to their patient and that is the problem; their patient's concerns about their health should be heard. I'll say it again more clearly: There are many people who are constantly miserable, have deteriorating health, or even DIE because a doctor is NOT LISTENING to their patient's concerns. That is the irony, that a stylist or photographer CARES MORE about who they are working with than the doctor who is supposed to keep them HEALTHY AND ALIVE. Yes, both sides have a job to do, and ironically the one that should be more concerned, have a personal connection, and have open communication with their patient is not. It's also extremely ignorant and flat out rude to compare a stylist to a drug dealer. As a former stylist, I can confirm that there are many people who go to stylists in hard times. When post-break up, to prepare for life altering events, in the middle of their gender discovery, and many other personal scenarios, people will turn to stylists for wardrobe help. This expression of self that is tailored SPECIFICALLY for the client is important for not only the client's satisfaction but their mental health. Same for a field like photography that is just another visual expression of self. When someone is happy with themselves, they generally feel more comfortable and better about themselves. Mental health is just as important as physical health. Do not devalue jobs just cuz it doesn't require a doctorate. Many of us do our best to help people with whatever special qualities we have.

    I mean. When people say 'plus size' what they mean is 'i have fat somewhere on my body' but that tells you nothing about how their weight sits. Maybe it sits on their stomach in a way they hate but on their butt in a way they like. Maybe they have big thighs but a narrow waist. Maybe they need to know how to angle their face to not show a double chin. Basically what he's saying is 'plus size isn't a label that has a pose. But I can tell you how to find your good angle if you have a double chin or don't wanna emphasize your hips.' When someone says 'im short' you have a full grasp of their situation, because most torsos are about the same size so you just. Lengthen the legs, which is the biggest place of variation. Wear clothing that makes you look longer, put on heels, and pose in ways that foreshorten you and make you look taller.

    What is labeled as "plus size poses" are a type of pose where everything that doesn't confirm to the narrow beauty standard is purposely turned away from the camera to "hide the imperfections". The most well-known one is the "fake waist" where both hands are placed on the waist and squished in to make the waist appear smaller. You see the same pose in almost every plus size shoot. I'm not happy about this at all. Because everyone IS different and we should celebrate and show of bodies of ALL sizes. Thank you for working WITH your clients! the difference is the term in question has a particular history. two people who look very alike can have very different labels for their bodies-plus size, fat, overweight, the list goes on. people vary wildly in what they choose and some find other terms offensive. by saying she identifies as plus size OP is saying that she chose this label for herself. that is the literal entire point of this short: that he won’t make assumptions of others bodies & identities. that’s why. it’s a tiny bit of semantic courtesy and it’s not that serious.

I appreciate the kindness, but I believe that encouraging behavior like addiction to food that is most likely caused by mental illness isn't a good thing. If you truly care about someone, you tell them what's wrong and help them do better. Putting them in a delusion "of everything is fine, it's all society's fault" doesn't actually help. I know it's none of my business, but it does make me upset to see other people struggling or harming themselves. Sorry if i sounded like an @ss.

    Lets be real. Plus size (which can start at SIZE 10 PANTS(!!)) does not always = obese. My mother is 6'0, within the healthy weight guidelines for her height, and still wears size 12/14 pants. I'm 5'0, very slightly above the "ideal weight" guidelines for my height (5lbs), and wear size 10 pants. Why? Because I have a huge fucking ass. I'm a small in shirts, dresses, have a 30 inch ribcage, yet am a LARGE in pants. Am I obese? No. I'm slightly overweight, active, and go to the gym frequently. I think the "identifies as plus size," thing is kinda stupid, but I guess both my mom and I are technically "plus sized" and would never consider ourselves as such.

So it’s important to ask for specifics before making generalizations?
