Electrician here. I always thought it was cool how hvac is sort of the bridge between us and plumbing. I recently did some minor troubleshooting on the electrical side of an ac unit alongside a plumber who looked at the “plumbing” side of the unit and together we were able to get it working haha. Love it!

You will my brother. I was in your exact situation a couple of years ago. The best advice I can give is to start looking for a job now. It will make school so much easier once you do a couple of installs and get your hands on the equipment. I’m making real good money now. Stick with it man!

I’m 28 now. Went to school for a year and been in the field 2 years. I love it and enjoy almost every day on the job. A lot to learn and a lot of work to do. Get the basics down and when you get a job you’ll be alright. I’ve never made better money in my life and it didn’t take long to find a company I like and one that pays well. Good luck.

More about thinking than physical anything. Age honestly helps most people in this trade. Mostly it’s about being competent and grasping the refrigeration cycle as well as how electricity and pressures effect the mechanical aspects of the machines.

I’d also recommend going to the union if you can. The education is top notch and you will have access to the entire field. Residential HVAC just brushes the surface of what a technician can do. Learn controls, chillers, etc and the salary climbs very quickly.

I’m a hvac journeyman in Ky. My father and I own a hvac business in eastern Ky called 1st Service Heating And Air we service (Richmond/Lex) area. I love the HVAC trade because every day is different. Loved the video ! I am in the hvac side working on commercial refrigeration equipment for supermarkets but always good running into the plumbers when the stores need both of our services 💪🏽

Been doing heating/plumbing for awhile with my gpa on the side. Did hvac for about 5 years now, currently a plumber for new york empire plaza. I love working for myself on the side doing both trades. If you take pride in your work and are honest with your customers, you'll always have work. The bad side about hvac is you will always be on call all the time year-round and you can get burnt out easily especially if you have young children and a house to take care of. I'm not saying its different from plumbing because when someones basement is flooding, and you get that call, you need to leave now. All in all both are awesome trades and will definitely mold you into a hard working individual and you will have a sense of accomplishment at the end of the day.

I'm a HVAC commercial pipe fitter and I LOVE my job!!! All the "plumbing" job are actually really cool, but the pipe fitter i reckon is the best one...when you have to focus on the drawing and have a look that all the other services done as the drawing shows and if not, go to tell them that they mistake, as well as take all the measurement to do a perfect job that first work and then that looks nice...

Nice videos! I am in Manitoba and a Redseal plumber/gas fitter and HVAC tech...very diverse with not only commercial/residential...the rural people need the same comforts. I had an outstanding and diverserse opportunity to learn anything from drainage, water supply, water treatment and HVAC comfort. Funny story...when I bought my Klein lineman pliers..the crusty guy entering the purchase looked at me and said..'Do you know how much they cost?' I asked 'When did we start dating?'

I am a commercial hvacr technician and it was the best decision I made for a career. I plan on getting into plumbing in the future. Love your videos!

do you think knowing both you’ll make more money bc i’m looking to go to school for HVAC and learn pluming from a HAVC & Plumbing business?(do you think it would be a good idea?)

I went to work as a helper in a plumbing company and for 6 months I end up leraning a lot for hvac and some electric as well . I just dont like installing hvac units long hours and really hard job to do. Plumbing and electric its fun 😀

I did 10 years as a “fresh water plumber” new commercial construction, then about 8 years in HVAC service and now the last 2years in plumbing service, All with the same company but soon planning on starting my own business. I’m glad I did HVAC but I like plumbing much more!

Up here in Connecticut if you don’t work in a union you usually do both. During my apprenticeship it was a 50/50 mix of hvac and plumbing. It’s great knowing both trades. It makes you worth more and gives you more versatility when working in a residential service business. I got in for my plumbing first but ending up preferring heating.

I do both here in N.H.! I like plumbing boilers the best and installing AC!! Service plumbing and drainage are my weakest areas that I am trying to learn more about. I am a journeyman here and finishing up class for my epa so I can do ac on my own In the spring!

Just got into plumbing. I live in California I am a helper right now turn 20 next week. I can get my own van within 6 months depending on how quick I learn. Today’ was my first day I loved it. Never thought I would get into plumbing. My uncle owns a HVAC company always wanted to work with him but he suggested I go to school first. So will do plumbing for a little while and see where life takes me!

Friendly correction, the R in HVAC/ R stands for Refrigeration. Refrigeration would be like for example, ice machines, walk-in coolers, walk-in freezers, beer walk-ins, kitchen equipment in restaurant or grocery stores. And refrigeration does differ from HVAC work, needs it’s own training

I work with Hydronic Heaters. There is alot of plumbing involved. The water heater sends hot water through the pipes and the water is recirculated back into the water heater. We have to turn off the water to work on the heaters. They are super efficient. Love plumbing.

I’m a Hvac Technician by trade and have plumbing experience because I’m a Maintenance supervisor in the apartment maintenance Field.I like both and installing water heaters is cool and toilets and faucets but troubleshoot in Hvac is the best.

Worked on 350 up to 6000 ton chillers powered by steam turbines and electric motors in nyc from plumbing with custom cut oil pipes, to refrigerant, mechanical, and electrical diagnosing, commercial hvac, to now working with huge portable 15 - 1000 ton chillers and HVAC equipment, and generators from 40kw to 1mw, and electrical distribution for all of that. Plumbing, HVAC, electrical, electrical controls and theory (think 24v controls), masonry and concrete work, and carpentry, there all good! If you like to landscape, nothing is stopping you from building and fully customizing your own house, and maintaining it :)

Been worried about hvac...but maybe I'm worrying too much, and i am capable of doing it. Thank you Roger Wakefield for all your videos. I'm 27 working nights in a hotel rn, but hopefully in a couple years I'll. Be working as an hvac tech.

Hvac, plumbing and electrical can definitely be tricky in the beginning when things are new but just keep at it and slowly but steadily things will start making sense. That hotel job will be a thing of the past before you know it!

I wanna join the hvac team. I keep hearing how challenging it is and how hot and dirty it can get, but that’s my type of work environment. I love a challenge and I like how the work is not slowing down anytime soon. I’m hoping to start school this afternoon when I get off work. I’m super excited about getting certified

I do maintenance work in a hospital- commercial plumbing, hvacr, electrical work , welding and some basic carpenter work and can't see were one job is any better than another. They all have as many bad work orders as good work orders, but if I had to pick I would say commercial refrigeration, heating and air conditioning is my pick of my best job. There is so much to learn in any one trade and to keep up with all changes going on is quite a challenge.

I'm a licensed HVACR technician and a journeyman electrician but when I started my company I only did it as an HVACR company. I mainly specialize in appliance repair and commercial refrigeration and appliances in restaurants, usually a lot of ice machines, coolers or freezers but I'm starting a plumbing course in August so I can incorporate the plumbing aspect of the trades into my already existing HVACR company. They always ask me whenever I'm doing service in a restaurant if I also do plumbing so I figured I should just go ahead, get certified and combine the two. My journeyman certification was more so I'd have the knowledge about things and I'm still unsure if I'll test for my Masters seeing as covid put a stop to renewing licenses where I live and it's made it ten times more difficult.

I'm both. Raised as a plumber. Work by day in sheet metal. I'm on the residential side. I work by day slinging tin and work on the side doing residential repairs and remodels for plumbing. Best of both worlds. I know what plumbers need. That works out well on new installation. But the side work is in plumbing. Everyone needs a plumber to call.

I personally hold 2 licenses from Cslb and my company has 3 licenses with an Rmo we do general contracting, plumbing and hvac. Yes hvac does include a bit of electrical and plumbing, I started out as working for 4 years as an electrician this is how I would rate after doing them all. 1- plumbing need experience beyond belief Gas, water , drain , vent and has to be spot on! 2- electrical although hvac is close depending on commercial or residential, residential electrical is easier. 3- hvac. residential is harder although doesn’t even come close to commercial electrical After 22 years in construction all licensed work!!!

there is almost always steady stream of good work from equipment breaking down. and when it's slow go on vacation

Hello Roger, im a tad late lol but anyways i am a sophomore. I am takeing HVAC classes in a tech school i would love to be in plubing class although hvac is more appealing to me plumbing is fun and somewhat simple sadly i had not signed up for it. But i did sign up for hvac and some other things i was accepted in hvac and... sorry stretching it out anyways, hvac is also fun but more dangerous because of refrigerant furnace work gas lines... ect. But it fun to figure out that stuff and i also get to do electrical work too which is like 2 classes in one. Its nice to know how to fix for example your cooling/heating in certian weathers instead of highering a technician for more than the job would be worth. And just a couple days ago i got my type 1 (yay) so if my parents have a problem they dont have to spend a whole lot of money for a diagnosis or repair.

Love both trades.

If I was a plumber I don’t know if I could deal with the dirty water and stuff. I think hvac is better because it’s more clean job. I could be wrong though.

What If you love both and just cant decide which path to fully take? I've been doing plumbing and hvac for 2yrs and have a more better understanding in the hvac side however I'm currently doing plumbing and just asking myself if I should stick with plumbing only so I work on getting my license..? My end goal is becoming a very solid HVAC tech and plumber I just need direction from someone. I do have many doors open for me with my current knowledge.

Im kinda both and neither at the same time. Im enrolled in HVAC in renton technical college and have applyed for a residential plumbing aprentiship at UA32. and the cherry on top. Most work Ive done was non employed automotive because I owned a beater car 2001 crv. Closest thing I did to a HVAC job besides partially vacuming vents is replace a radiator.

I'm actually going from H.V.A.C to being a plumber apprentice. Most companies in my area do both and I enjoy both about equally.

Why you going to plumbing

There is a 3rd option in HVAC/R and that's the commercial refrigeration side. There are a lot of supermarkets and restaurants where refrigeration is serious work, imagine a refrigerated food warehouse and the freezer is slowly getting warmer with hundreds of thousands of dollars in product that will soon be trash if it's not fixed. HVAC/R can also lead you into the food service repair trade where your fixing restaurant equipment which I did for awhile before moving to supermarkets and warehouse refrigeration. Commercial refrigeration is in massive demand for techs and once you have a few years experience and can actually walk the walk you can almost name your price and companies will be tripping over themselves to get you, hell the Walmart near me (we do some contract work there) is hiring HVAC/R techs right out of trade school with zero real world experience for $38/hr.

I do supermarket and industrial refrigeration youre completely right it never slows down. Theres always another call to take if you want to take it and they pay over time by the day (if you work before 8am or after 5pm its time and a half) All of the old timers are retiring or dying off and the ones that stay struggle with the new electronics and computerized side of things and the newbies struggle with the old school mechanical type equipment so there is plenty of opportunity if youre a sharp guy and you can learn to work on it all and you are willing to work like 18-20hr work days every here and there...

HVAC is seasonal for most part, customers only call when un-bearable heat is un-comfortable, example is wearing a ball cap with a 9-volt battery/plastic fan blade, extra battery's on hand during errand adventures. Plumbing year round, rain, sleet, snow, shine, also come with contraption entity's, comes within the terrain/occupation. Difference being water damage very very expensive, secondary if even leaking outdoors, existing water meter continues to spin, resulting with very high to extreme water bill.

dad was a plumber and he said like you did that plumbers PREVENT diseases

Good video, how difficult is to get the Plumbing license after been a HVAC tech?

Ive done only 2 years of both but I prefer residential on both. Plumbing I would choose service work. And you would still want a backhoe or something to dig with incase you have to replace a drain. Hvac I would prefer installations. But service work is ok. I think it takes less tools and less equipment to do hvac.

Find a paid apprenticeship. Learn as you go, soak up knowledge, and supplement what you learn on the job with book learning. That way atleast you don't have any debt, and you'll still get a good education if you're motivated. I switched from being an auto mechanic...in 5 months I've learned enough to where I'd be comfortable doing an install.

I'm an hvac tech. I love it. Someday I'll cross train in both electrical and plumbing. Not that I want to be a turd chaser, but I want to open a business.

Can you get some HVAC experience through plumbing?

Hey man I know its a year later but what you could do is start off as a helper for a small business hvac company. Then if you're doing good they'll offer to train you. That's what I did. Now I'm licensed hvac tech. My boss even bought me books to study off of when I was starting out. There's no better place to learn these kind of trades than on the actual job. School just gives you technical knowledge but I'd say like 30% of what a trade school will tech isn't practical. You'll get all your practical knowledge on the field.

Go in to a shop and ask fpr an apprenticeship and show up on time and ask good questions, listen mlre than you speak...and get paid to learn.

I’m a plumber but have done bits and bobs in HVAC. HVAC isn’t as wide as plumbing plus the money is worse.

I Am an industrial commercial female electrician that work in high voltage sub stations. My work is safe because we lockout, tag out and dead check before we perform are work. Safety is where it is. If you work in commercial or industrial I am sure you have worked with steam lines which you have to lock out and tag out to be safe. So we both have dangerous jobs.

HVAC. But I’m also a plumber and electrician on occasion as that ties in with my work a lot.

On the attic situation. In Oklahoma it can be up around 140 degrees during the summer inside attics. That’s the same temperature you bake cookies. 😘
