when i worked at a guitar shop we had a ridiculous amount of vintage Dyna Comps, 12 or 13 i think. so one day i grabbed them all, chained them together, and maxed them all out. No joke it was such a great/terrible sound. the tone and dynamics were like the equivalent of trying to speak after being punched in the throat, and this oppressive noise floor would slowly swell in as each note faded out and then immediately die when you hit a note again.

me and some friends once went into a guitar center and bought three metal zones (their entire stock) plus an old digitech metal master and we just spent the whole day making noises. at first we ran a guitar through them but then we used my dad's old delay that had a dry out to create a feedback loop. it was very fun.

I did this exact thing about a decade ago - minus the original crate amplifier of course (I used the clean channel on a DSL100) Obviously, it didn’t sound great but it was super fun to do!!

Damn it. I also was getting my first guitar gear in 2003, wanted Metal Zone, but wasn't able to afford it, and got a 15w Crate with built-in overdrive. A similar start, now 20 years later Rob is the man, and I'm about as bad at guitar playing as I was 20 years back (but still loving it).

I had a super shitty crate combo starting out. Tiny thing with unusable distortion, my parents getting me a ds1 to plug into it made me keep playing haha. Crate amp actually came as a package with a cheap strat clone which is actually my favorite guitar to play that I have after sanding the coating off the neck and frets.

My first set up, Washburn strat copy, Crate amp, not a “metal” pedal but a construction truck orange Boss OS-2 Overdrive/Distortion and a DOD FX-75b Stereo Flanger that never got played in stereo, later added a Vox wah (and I still have the Crate and the wah, but it’s modded with a better switch and the FoxxRoxx buffer so it doesn’t fight with my Superfuzz clone.)

I have a crate gx2200h Excalibur running through a 200 watt vintage Marshall cab. Its WAY TOO POWERFUL for the cab once you turn it past 4. That Amp rips. I love that crate. The blue voodoo was actually a ripping crate Amp too.
