Plein Air Painting in our London Neighborhood + Painting Analysis

Original music by Patrick Ross aka PattyMalarkey
In this latest painting adventure, Nate and I chase the last of the light in our London neighborhood on a warm summer evening. We only had about 45 minutes before the sun went down, so it was an exercise in efficiency and prioritizing to capture the gesture of the evening.
We worked small and focused mainly on color, value and overall vibe, rather than complicated architecture. This is always the most challenging time of day to paint, as the light moves so quickly, so it’s important to try and go in with a game plan and keep it simple. Plein air painting is definitely more than the painting you bring home, it’s the experience. So like every adventure, we always try to have fun and make the most of it. We hope you enjoy!

So fun to see you both in action. Love the looseness of Lindsay’s Oil in this one. Would love to watch more of the process in Nate’s gauche painting. I have not used gauche at all yet and wonder how closely it matches up with Flashe paint. Flashe drys so fast but of course does not reconstitute when wet but it’s appearance looks a lot like gauche. Love watching both of you painting.

I only recently tried touching up a plein air piece back in the studio and it was a huge conundrum for me about what to tighten up and what to leave. It wasn't just brush work either it was also color adjustments as well. But in the end i feel like i can see the benefit of just tidying up something that might be a little too loose in spots. Loved both of your paintings and it felt like you both really captured the light really well. i'm impressed you can paint so small! Keep it up guys :)

Thanks Danny! Nate here. Yeah you have to be disciplined when doing studio touch ups, and I’ve definitely ruined a painting by changing too much. I have a hard time “ finishing” a painting on location so I take good photo reference, modify the reference up in photoshop to match the colors in my painting, then make the finishing touches in studio.

Thanks! I think I just responded to you on Instagram, but the gray glass is heavier, but easier to clean. If you plan on hiking for miles and miles when you paint you might want to consider the plexiglass because it’s lighter. Every ounce counts when you are lugging around all your painting gear in your backpack!

Hey Lindsey, I came across one of your painting and like it very much. I further checked your website and fell in love with your work. I like the contrast which is dominant in your work. Your work is also very inspiring. Do you always only use 10 - 12 oil colours with more of warm tone tubes for all your paintings ??? Greetings to you and Nate from India !!!
