Sooooooo good! I love how the sun always comes out at the END and makes gorgeous shadows just as you're finishing. Gaaaahhh! That always happens to me. Incredible job with both gouache and oil GUYs!

Thanks Mel! That’s always the case isn’t it, especially here in London. The morning often will start bright and sunny, but the clouds are always near. It’s kind of like SF in a lot of ways, although it’s not the fog we get in the bay, these are real deal clouds full of rain.

Thanks! Nate here. I think the key is to not fret too much about the stuff, but do a good enough job with the gear to not make it a chore to paint. It’s always going to be a bit of a pain to get everything together, but trying your best to get the weight of the gear down will allow you to be more mobile when you are out and about looking to paint.

Love the end result! I never tried painting outside, looks very fun, maybe this summer I might give it a try!

Probably someone mentioned it, but you can use synthetic brushes, water mixable oils, and that way you do not have the issues around solvents, smells, clean-up, etc... Water oils are real oil paints, the will work with "all" oil mediums, can be mixed with any oil paints. They are basically the real deal. Of course if you use them with some mediums or mix them with oil paints, you will have the smells, and clean-up issues to some extent. The point is they are real oil paints, not some semi-latex material. For on the road, you can go all water.

Great video guys! I also do oil and gouache plein air. I will have to check out the wet board thing you mentioned for the gouache for sure. And Lindsey...I am going to try painting with just a pallet knife and see what happens. I love the look of your finished painting. Well done guys.

A nice reminder of summer and some good tip from you both, to cut down oil painting weight I fill some small empty tubes which helps a bit. Good spot for painting.

Thanks Peter. For oil painting, we will often buy empty tubes and fill them with just enough color for a few plein air session which cuts down on the weight.

And there’s the sun. 🤣 Typical for me. I struggle with detail painting a la prima with oil. I prefer gouache and watercolor. Something to remember with gouache is how those darks will dry darker. Those trees are coming off deep brown to black in the painting. Both paintings are beautiful. And the detail on the boat in oils amazes me. I would have a mess there.

Thanks for sharing! Maybe try using command strip velcro to keep your palette steady instead of the rope :)

Lovely to see your inventory of supplies and a peek into your plein air process! How do you bring your oil palette home Lindsey after painting, do you keep the paint on it to reuse later, or clean it before packing into the backpack? Also, what do you do with the bottom part of the board after painting, do you cut it off? Thanks for answering whenever you can:)

Nate here. Lindsey will keep the paint globs on the palette but will scrape off the colors she mixed to keep it clean for the next painting. As far as the board goes, we have found it more economical to divide boards up into two sections and do two paintings on them and cut them out later.

Wow Nate I thought you were using Quinacridone Gold for blocking in and sketching your layout… but burnt Sienna is lovely for that. Less expensive also!

That sounds like a pretty fancy color! I’m not that fancy, just good ol burnt Sienna for me. It works well for “ earthy” undertones.

Hi Ellen. Nate Here. Thanks for checking out our channel. We are going to be making new videos soon because Spring has finally sprung! So as far as I know, gouache is very archival as long as it is properly protected from the elements. I suggest framing a gouache painting behind glass, with a little space between the paintings and the glass. Some people seal the painting with spray varnish or some kind of wax, but I haven't tried that. You want to paint on acid free paper or illustration board preferably. I have seen gouache paintings from the late 1800's that are in perfect condition.

I'm wondering if there's any difference in using acrylic vs. gouache outside? They seem like they would be about the same. Perhaps the feel of the final painting might be different? Great work to you both!

Thanks! Nate here. I have yet to try Acrylic outside but yes, I would imagine they would be very similar. The only different might be that gouache can be re activated with water, but I believe once acrylic dries it doesn’t reactivate but I could be mistaken about that.

Thanks for the video, so inspiring🌸 Nate, maybe magnets could be a solution for your palette. Ive glued little magnets in my palette setup, though that is wood. What about magnet tape on the easel and little flat magnetic pieces stuck at the bottop of ur palette. I have also dropped a magnet into my spraybottle so its stuck on my easel and wont fall down:)

Hey Lene. Nate here. GREAT SUGGESTION! Magnets. Solved. Brilliant. I’m such a caveman, when I was putting together my silly gouache set up I just grabbed a rope that was in my studio, tied it around the palette and called it done. I’m going to get magnets today. Are there any you recommend?

@@paintingwithlindseyandnate8007 im not sure what brand ive used and ive been able to sink mine into the wood and glue them so they are flush with the wood, you might have to experiment a bit with how you solve it. But both magnet tape and the small little round magnet pieces I got at a hardware store here in Norway. Hopefully the magnet tape sticks to ur metal easel, but maybe there is a type of glue for metal...? Hope you figure it out, im sure it must be possible! Good luck 👏🏻

Thanks Lene! I like the Gurney setup, but the palette is so small, and I hate working on the hard palette because my paint dries too fast for my liking, that’s why I use the wet palette. The goal is to make a version of his palette but modified so that I can attach the wet palette. The magnets are such a good idea. Thanks again!

Thanks Euan! Nate here. Good question and that definitely has happened before. We were pretty sure they weren’t going anywhere, but that’s why you have to paint fast! I didn’t even notice the people on the people until we watch the footage. I guess we just lucked out.

I thinks it important to just go with what you feel. Sometimes I feel like the richness of colors I can get from oil, and other times I just want to go light weight so it’s good to have options.

Thanks so much! I will check on the brand of the angles brushes and let you know. Recently I switched out my watercolor brushes for synthetic oil painting brushes and I love it. The brushes seem to hold more paint, and they are a little stiffer so it feels more like painting with oils.

Absolutely. We recently moved back to the states and its taken a while to get our studios set up, but more painting videos are in the plans.

Great work! I was just wondering, Nate: why Hot Press and not Cold Press Paper? When I paint with watercolour, I hardly ever use HP, doesn't flow that nice. Is it different with gouache? Thanks for sharing the video!

Thanks! Nate here. I like Hot press because it’s a smoother paper, less texture. I haven’t noticed if the cold press has better flow, it very well might. I’ve gotten used to how the gouache works with hot press paper so maybe I should go back and try one with cold and I’ll let you know.

Which one would you recommend for someone whose interested in going for a smooth, yet opaque piece: gouache or oil paints? Would you use boar brushes for either?

I would go with gouache if you don’t want brushstrokes to show. Boar brushes are much better suited for oil paint as they hold a lot of paint and are fairly fought. Synthetic is best for gouache and it will give you a smoother application

Hi TJ. Yes, it's quite heavy compared to other plein air easels, but it's probably the most durable one out there.

How do you transport an oil painting back with you so you don't smudge it??

Hi Jackie. A wet panel carrier allows you transport your wet painting around without messing it up. We use the Raymar brand wet panel carrier.

Other option I found is water mixable oils....it's best for Plein air...just use water and results are same as oils

Good question. We didn’t have to declare the supplies, but we do leave a note in in the luggage with the paints saying they are “ vegetable oil based artist colors” so if they go through our luggage at the airport they don’t throw them away.

I don't like gouache anymore...because...it is never dried...it always muddies when you apply a wet paint over it...also it dries lighter than expected...maybe I'm not using it properly. I changed to soft pastels now for easy Plein air...no mixing time,readymade colours, can put many layers, drying is not an issue...less materials...yes..hands are messy but I carry wet towel...

Where are you guys.? I miss you
