I'm curious as well! I'm Taiwanese and have been fascinated by Japanese culture since middle school, all the way through university. I've been to Japan at least seven times, visiting places like Osaka, Tokyo, Nagoya, and Fukushima. However, I've really never met any Japanese who can speak another language. Do Japanese people, like Americans, mostly focus on what happens within their own country?

I can tell you learning english was a very great experience. I think it’s an important language if you want to communicate with foreigners or if you work in economy. Else, I think it’s not really necessary unless you enjoy learning a new language. Learning english as a japanese person is not a piece of cake. In addition japan is the third highest economic power so I think english is very interesting for japanese people.

Sadly those times have changed and its not a very affluent country anymore, many want to go abroad and send money back but don't have the English skills.

Just as American students learn foreign languages, but cannot speak them fluently, due to no chance for daily speaking practice in real conversations; Japanese students never become fluent. Speaking a foreign language begins with a silent period of just listening. If a person is not immersed in a language, speaking it is more difficult. There are programs which bring native English teachers into schools; however these are not trained teachers, but rather young people wanting to experience a foreign culture.

I think the bigger issue is that the education system for language learning in Japan is a demonstrable failure. ALTs come to Japan to teach but they have to follow the lead of Japanese faculty that are often not even conversational in English themselves. Young Japanese students are completely unaware of the benefits of learning English so the only motivation they have to study is to pass written exams to get into a good high school and university which does not make them fluent.

Most of it is just pore English education in schools 20 or more years ago, younger japanese are usually better due to better education. Because of extreme national pride there is also a bit of stigma around people speaking English when it's not connected to work, Mainly for females.

Because they are Japanese not English.....In the same way you wouldn't expect English people to speak Japanese if you came to the UK or the US...I have visited Japan and loved it!....I do not understand the language..and I did not expect them to understand me..I can speak a hand full of Japanese words...not enough to have a conversation....or to understand what is being replied......But I got by using google translate and basic hand gestures for 3 weeks...I did meet one Japanese gentleman who did speak enough English to hold a conversation with me..He chose to speak to me after we crossed paths at a hidden temple. I think he was surprised to see a westerner there. He was a little older than me..maybe in his mid to late 60's..I think he was happy to try out this English on me...very nice man. He was waiting for his wife.

Japanese here. There are a lot of non native English speaker that can speak English. Just look at the South East Asian…Singaporean, Malaysian etc. Many other non native English speaking Westerners can speak English. Sure you don’t actually NEED to be able to speak/understand English but then you will tend to end up becoming like those group of Japanese who have delusional ideas about the West/Western people partly due to them not able to understand English.

Nope. Sorry. They have had 6 years MINIMUM of formal instruction but since most Japanese do enter university and English starts in elementary school then it’s more like 8-9 years. So it’s not fair to compare on that basis. Also English , for better or worse, is the Lingua Franca of the world. But the reason they can’t is because they focus almost solely on written exams. In a sense they do it backwards to how it should be done in order to SPEAK natural language.

It's very much a Japanese thing...If someone feels a little under the weather..they will wear a mask..so as to not spread any germs they feel they may have...especially your basic cold...Especially in a work enviroment..Not wanting to pass on any possible health issues...And visa versa...Not wanting to catch other peoples grems...Like when on very crowded trains (can get intense at certain times of day)...When you do it offen..it just becomes a habit to wear...Certainly since COVID.

    1. Japan was never colonized. 2. Japan is literally the only non-Western country that exports more of its culture abroad than it imports from the West. 3. It's also racist of you to assume that everything is white colonialism when it clearly isn't. Black Americans are the most racist people on the planet right now. Simply because no one's pointing out when they're acting racist and it's pretty much accepted as normal in America. But what you're saying is like saying "It's all due to black hood culture" whenever someone sees a white or Hispanic thug. Either both this and your statements are racist, or neither of them are and it's okay to blame black people for anything gang-related in America. You don't get special privilege to be racist only against white people.
