Please let me finish my sentence | Dan Hudock | TEDxIdahoFalls

The natural inclination of people is to help people with communication disorders by saying for us what we’re trying to say, but it’s like helping a butterfly leave its cocoon. We need the struggle. The struggle helps us find our own voice.
Dan is a Speech and Language Pathologist who can speak from experience. His own communication disorder allows him to understand speech at a level that not many others can.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Someone made them feel they are not worthy. That makes the stutter. The shame belongs to those who do this to them. You are all worthy and ok. Blessings.

I stutter, and it is a complex disability, but I have learned to accept my condition and live with it. I don't mind telling people that I stutter and asking them to let me know if they don't understand anything I say. Some people accept it, and others don't. But I chose to live whole; my stutter is already a personal challenge; I will not let the world add more stress to my inherent condition.

As a fellow SLP, I am inspired and enlightened. Thank you for shedding some light on an area that has been difficult, even as trained professional. You have helped me become more confident in my ability to help, NOT CURE, my clients who stutter.

I know this is a bit over the top, but I love this the most is because I was there when he gave this talk and afterwards I talked and congratulated him. Its because of him I'm not afraid of getting up in front of my class and expressing anything

I will do anything to NOT talk on the phone. Its hard enough to make it through the day without having to talk to anyone, but the phone is a really big hurdle i just cant get over. I stuttered in School bad. Constantly being picked on, being made fun of. I couldnt get up in front of the class. One mistake, and they would laugh, or say something. I got to where i just stopped talking. I'm alot better now, but i still have times where it is really hard to get out what i want to say that i get upset with myself and wont talk for a while.

I've stuttered since I was a kid. And since then I've been doing everything I can NOT to stutter. Letters and words that I know will give me trouble? Avoid. Stuck in the middle of a sentence? formulate it differently and start all over again. Everything I want to say I have to go through in my head first. And still I'll stutter and get stuck at the simplest of words. People laugh, mock or downright ignore you...so it's often just easier to not say anything at all. And there is no logic to it. There are good days, where I almost don't stutter at all and bad days, where I won't pick up my phone. So I understand you Micheal, I really do. It helps to know that there are people, who go through the same thing I do. Hope it's the same for you.

What has helped me tons is reading the book How To Run Your Own Life by Jut Meininger (as long as I apply it I eliminate it completely) (when you read it you'll realize that you have to turn off your Adapted Child state and little by little train your Parent state so your Adapted child doesn't intervene)... you can download it (they don't print it anymore)

Because I have a heard time hearing and cant feelcorrect feelings in voice box, ruined from surgery. I have to always watch for how i speak. I sound mean. Yell. Not realizing it. Hate being around people. They are not capable of understanding. So when I get emotional about something. It is 1000x worse. I feel for you all.

Dan, thanks so much for sharing this. I don't have a speech issue. I think it incredibly brave for you to share your story and your research with us. I clicked on this link because I am constantly running into people who interrupt me when I'm trying to explain, and they get it wrong 70% of the time, which is funny, because that's why I have to explain in the first place... they don't understand the problem.

The fact that the 911 operator hung up on you because of your stutter is a major red flag. That is unprofessional and lives could have been at stake.

I don't think stuttering is a communication disorder. I disagree on this point. Communication is so much more than fluently speaking. Stuttering, in my opinion, is just another form of speaking. Nothing wrong with stuttering.
