This is one of those times I wish I could animate, because I have the perfect animatic for this: Grian just vibing in the permit office (he’s the one whistling off-key while wearing headphones and sweeping up) meanwhile the song is slowly turning all the hermits into zombies, and by the end, they’re all banging on the windows of the office, and Grian, not looking at them, thinking they’re just angry hermits, puts up a sign in the window that says they’re only open on Sundays. I don’t know, I just find it really funny

This super unhinged version is GREAT, but for the purposes its trying to serve, I feel like subtlety is _key!_ It has to sound completely normal for a while at the start, but slowly become more and more "off" as it goes on. It has to be subtle enough that they notice something is wrong, but because they've been listening to it for so long it feels like its all in their head. Then it kicks into full "unhinged mode" after a loooong time of playing, building up over time and reaching the point it is in this version.

Yes! Have the "perfectly normal" bit a little longer than what it is now, and come in slower with the insanity. The whistling might also be a little much, to be honest, as it's super obvious the second it starts. Like others have said, though, adding some barely audible screams and/or knocking sounds would be awesome as well.

I mean this as the most genuine compliment to what you've accomplished here: it sounds like a middle school band's rendition of Please Hold, with one father in the audience who's heard it a few too many times during his kid's practice and is subconsciously whistling along (and he's a bit tune-deaf, and not that good at whistling).

The super off key whistling is somehow the funniest thing in the world to me. I hope Grian keeps using this version for the waiting room.

in all honesty what i'd do for a less unhinged version of this is: - remove the whistling - add more off-key notes to compensate for the above lack of whistling, including in the "singing" sections present in the original song - make it slightly slower and pitched down somewhat - make it quieter, add an echo

Add faint distant whispers in the background - maybe an interlude where the music gets drowned out in reverb and horror ambience - then it stops for 5 seconds and starts playing like normal

I feel like the whistling should instead be made way quieter and more distant and have it very slowly fade in and become louder and louder as time goes on, and I also don't think the entire song should be quieter, because that would make it easier to ignore the unnerviness

Grian in like sort the lofi girl thing but it's in the backrooms and he just gets progressively more lovecraftian

I feel like the whistle is where it goes too far. But more of those like little glitches, and even a part where it just gets stuck like a vinyl disk player would make it even better.

This is beyond cursed, Jono has officially embraced insanity of the Hermits he's been making music for for years, now that is epic.

When something is so horrible it wraps around back to good-- though that might even be a stretch for this monstrosity. The whistling really sells the painfulness of this. What a masterpiece in torment.

The only thing needed now is the command to create a permit

This version was really unsettling to begin with, but then the whistling came in and I couldn't stop laughing. Well done!

Oh my...it just keeps getting uh better as it goes. If there's a third version...more cowbell and off time percussion.

It reminds me of "Doki Doki Literature Club". The more you played the game- the worse it went. And so did the music with these little cracks and wrong notes. Amazing.

It’s so jarring to listen to but my gosh does it accurately reflect life in the permit office 😂

The only thing that would make this better is if the last three minutes got progressively slower.. and slower.. AND SLOWER. Until it was just a deep rumbling base of agony. That'd take it off the last hinge it's hanging onto methinks.

maybe possibly add: one part where it randomly pauses for 5 seconds and then restarts from the beggining some whispering in the background some people laughing with a very deep edited voice add a man screaming but extremely high pitched put very loud stomping at the end as though a monster is walking, and make them gradually go faster until the song restarts remove the rythm jazz chords from the replies: instead of removing the rythm the song should be slihtly out of time nails on a chalkboard distant bagpipes if you listen closely, someone would be repeating "run" and "get out" knocking door effect at one point amazing grace 1922 editoin a couple dark bible verses During the pause has grain say all done, so when they come up grain can act confuse and send them down again actually please dont thats too far

Umm I think even using this in a prison should be illegal. The punishment should be 1 day in prison with the thing you said or 20 years in prison. I bet people will choose 20 years if you give them a sample for 10 minutes of this. While youre at it, add some scratching sound effects too. Like the sound chalk makes when writing on board.

It's not unhinged - it is "advanced", almost "jazzy avant garde" :)

I love the psychological horror, fits well with slow-pace and chill vibes of season10

I had to pause Grians video to come over here and say: YOU MADMAN!!!!

I love the idea of a more subtle one, with things like the missed or wrong notes, a single small pause where the music cuts out for 5-10 seconds and then comes back on like nothing happened, maybe a slow morph into a definitively more creepy tune, a muffled thump at some point. I don't know what else... I saw someone suggest slowing it down and adding a faint knocking, which is pretty good. Grian is so perfect for this role, with the soulless eyes on his minecraft skin.

We could make it even worse. Have it begin to slow down over time, and add knocking (but only in one ear for the people using stereo audio or headphones).

Changing the playback speed really messes this around like x2 is just panic attack levels, but x0.75 is just ominous like a slowly deteriorating clockwork music box.

Definitely more unhinged than doing a 1hr version of the original wouldve been. Took me over a minute to notice anything different

Honestly, I don't even know whatvwas Grian worried about. It is perfection!

I’m not gonna be able to make it, but an animatic of Grian torturing Hermits in the backrooms to this with a few jumpscares of BigB would be funny.

This sounds like a slow descent into madness….I love it. 10/10

This song shows you how incredible an artist Jono is. Not only can he remix his original song, but he can make is sound so uncomfortable but it somehow still sounds good. 10/10, weirdly, I love this version.

The whistling and off-key notes don't sound too bad, and actually compliment the song more once you get used to it in my opinion. More corrupted glitches would be better, and with one continuous one at the end until it comes to a stop.

Grian should make the Permit Office like a little haunted building, looking seemingly innocent from the outside
