PLEASE Don’t Waste Your Money! These “New” Laptops Are E-waste! Do This Instead!

The lenovo laptop in this video was from a previous video, where I bought 10 laptops for $100. I do have a video capture card, however I could not get the HDMI to work on that computer, so sorry for the poor screen recording. The Pentium silver or N100 paired with 8 GB of RAM is much better, but still not great.
If you are looking to buy a new cheap Windows laptop, you will most likely regret buying the cheapest Windows laptop they have. Not everyone knows about the different laptop processors, and that's ok, but you should know that the cheapest new laptops often have very cheap and slow Celeron or Arm-based processors. Although a Celeron processor can be ok, with a Chrome book, it will really struggle for Windows. if you absolutely don't want to buy a used laptop and want to buy a new one, the new Intel I3 or AMD Ryzen 3 should be good enough for basic work and school tasks. These are much much better than the Celeron, although you will pay more for these laptops. If you absolutely must have a laptop for under $150, then it's much better to buy a used midrange laptop.

Great video. I remember when the early HP Streams were popular. Right out of the box it would try to do a Windows Update and then bootloop because the storage would get full. It was quite literally unusable. The amount of e-waste these budget laptops are generating is criminal.

I remember around 2014/2015 I got a brand new Dell Inspiron as a gift, had a Celeron N2830, 4GB RAM, and a 500GB 5400RPM HDD, it was completely unusable with anything other than linux or Windows 7. Even with linux or windows 7, 720p youtube would still have hitches, on windows 10 it was a slideshow. Don't even get me started on boot times, which an SSD will help, but thats ALL the SSD will help, as the system is constantly bottlenecked by the CPU. They are a literal scam, and anybody I've known looking for a laptop, I've personally helped them source a used one because I know what those Celeron's feel like lmao

You can get a new laptop with an Intel N100 that should perform much better than that old Thinkpad for around 200 dollars. It's important to read reviews before buying and do some research. It's the same for everything in life, wether it's a computer, a car a house etc... Companies shouldn't scam people, but people still need to do their research if they don't want to be scammed.

The low performance of cheap new laptops is entirely down to the fact that they are severely power limited in the BIOS. I picked up a few Celeron N4020 laptops for 99€ each for my family. Yes, the performance is terrible out of the box, but removing the power limit made them perfectly usable, they can even run GTA V at 20 fps with an external hard disk. If you can get these for around that price, then they definitely are worth it considering that there are no further investments required, they get good battery life l and will work for a good while.

Finally someone talking about this. I was going to get a Lenovo, but I got an Acer instead, MUCH MORE BUILD Quality and has more ports and has a true HDMI Port, which was useful for my college. And I got over my budget to get the best processor I could buy, for longevity reasons (also gaming lol). Ryzen 5700u. I plan on upgrading the ram to 20gb and installing a second SSD on it. And wow, I NEVER thought these underpowered laptops even existed outside my country.... Wow.. I thought Positivo laptops were bad, but these real brands are very close to this very sketchy brand in Brazil. The ONLY BAD THING is that it has a soldered 4gb ram, which I cant escape. Only gamer laptops have unsoldered ram nowdays. Also I dont recommend Intel without an external GPU. AMD's Internal GPU's do much better without a dedicated graphics card, and it has stronger cores, good for longevity. But that's my viewing of things. Awesome video

Not only that but they have a crippled version of Windows installed, something called Windows S, which does not allow installing a lot of programs. Basically, it's a single-tasking computer with NO virtual memory! And trust me, I use several older computers but with Linux and FreeBSD not Windows. I actually have a SEMPRON (even older than a Celeron) with 2GB RAM in a tower configuration but since it does have a FAN, it runs FINE! I've replaced the hard drive with 2x1TB SSD drives and I use it as my main fileserver. It's old but fit for purpose.

A lot of sub-$500 laptops have very slow clock speed. That does enhance battery life, but your pages and processes may run very slowly. It's a point worth checking.

if youre "old" laptop isnt fast enough just upgrade youre laptop (the ram or even the cpu and the storage if avalble) insteadd of throwing it away and getting a "new"one as i am doing it to my asus vivobook 15 with 8gb ram upgrading it to 32 gb ram to run minecraft at a faster rate. even photoshop will be able to run faster. if needed to maybe debloat windows and or buy a new laptop if you cant upgrade it and make youre "old" laptop into a machine to play about with linux, hackintosh, make a minecraft server, or make it into a smart fridge, make it into a smart mirror, make it into a kiosk (home control panel to control smart home appliences) and many more.

Maybe try to upgrade that new Lenovo laptop with an SSD to make it a fair comparison. If that's even possible with the eMMC installed. Also the 2GB of RAM are an outright scam.

I just got a Lenovo ThinkPad X280 with 16GB RAM and a 512GB SSD for just 220€. Loving the thing. Some people just prefer to spend the same on laptops with 2012 netbook kind of specs just to get a brand new one.

my first laptop that I copped a few years ago was also a Lenovo with Windows 10 installed, its performance was even worse compared to what was demonstrated in the video despite having more ram. since then I learned how computers work, switched to Linux and upgraded this laptop, but no matter which Linux distro I installed or how much ram I added it still performs pretty badly. then I sorta acquired another Lenovo laptop for my office, which is about 15 years old. so I fixed the keyboard, upgraded it and now it performs pretty well, even kinda close to my Acer Nitro 5

I bought one of those craptops from a thrift store. It actually struggles to run Windows and the crappy Intel Atom Z3735F has a clock speed lower than those low end cpus from 2006. The cpu is 64 bit but the bios is locked to be 32 bit for some unknown reason with so chaotic hardware that not even linux will even boot from it if I am lucky. The mouse and keyboard wont even work without a driver

We had computers with celeron at my first job. About 1gb RAM and win XP. It was many years ago. And even on Windows XP everything worked with lags. It's been so many years, but Intel still makes these processors for some reason and they are as slow as before.

2 core 2.4GHz processor with 2GB of RAM is unable to load a script in a browser and move an image from left to right. There were times when everything worked smoothly on way less powerful machines and they were not considered underpowered. This Celeron is roughly as powerful as Core 2 Duo E8400 (and its consumption is ~10 times less), meaning it must be able to run Crysis, so the real problem is somewhere else :( Still, I don't understand why is doesn't perform well enough in youtube, because it does have an h264 acceleration in its GPU.

i got that exact 2 in 1 Lenovo Yoga in the left. As with all of my PCs i wiped out Win and put Linux thinking that a convertible light machine for eBook reading and general media viewing mostly would suit me and honestly it did well... aside from the Ram, that's a serious limitation, even with 1 Gb of swap available. Looking into Convertible x86 Chromeooks to flash coreboot to and put linux on them instead (bcs hell, even 4Gb would make it better)

I avoided all this mess a few years ago by buying a tenth gen laptop with a 2070 GPU with a tax return. Expensive but it's going to last a good while with care. I did up the RAM from 16GB to 32GB. It also has an extra NVME slot.

The expectation for unsuspecting general consumers is that online Marketplaces are more trustworthy than say second-hand on EBay - when those disposable laptops for inexpensive prices are just not suitable for today's online experience. But that is not really understood by people. You can sometimes find semi-recent laptops from computer recyclers if you live near one. Ex-corporate workstation laptops with the CPU families similar to what you put in your description and even 16gb of RAM as you indicate in your video. Anyway, great video.

I still remember ads "Two Cores, Two Gigs, Gaming Videocard" were real ads for used PCs and laptops since mid 2000s (when that made some sense with Core 2 Duo and 2GB or RAM being while not good, but still enough for Windows XP and Vista) but where I live something like this was still shown at like 2014, when 4GB RAM was still somewhat useable but already lacking.

Linux Mint is very intuitive. I gifted my elderly mother an HP Stream to use after her previous laptop stopped functioning. The specs were awful. Bad CPU paired with a 64GB SSD, and low RAM. Windows 11 ran super hot. When I gave her the laptop, she did not even notice that I had swapped the OS. It runs youtube and has basic office software included. Linux Mint also uses much less storage and RAM.

love the fact you have the X201, do you get any WiFi connection issues on it when its on battery? cause for me when i unplug my X201 from the wall after like 10 minutes the WiFi randomly starts disconnecting from the network and says "Connected, No Internet" and to fix it i have to disconnect from the network manually then reconnect, but even that only fixes it for like 5 or so minutes, and no this does not happen in linux, only windows..?
