I Bought 10 Random Laptops For $10 Each. Did I get Ripped Off?

For this video, I decided to narrate it with my actual voice instead of an AI voice, as in my previous videos. I used an AI voice because I didn’t think the mic sounded good, I reduced the gain for recording, and that helped remove background noises from cars and trucks outside, but I still think the audio doesn’t sound that great. Does anyone have any suggestions for better audio? My microphone is a Samson Q2U. Would you prefer my actual voice, or should I go back to using an AI voice?
While the laptops did cost $100, I also had to pay taxes and shipping, so if you count that, they really cost about $14 each. Also, if you want to get a good used laptop for yourself, I suggest NOT doing what I did. You should only buy 10 scraptops if you like working on older laptops as a hobby and enjoy the anticipation of what you may or may not get. Overall, I think for the price, I'm happy with what I got despite the many flaws.

The previous company I worked ran X1 Carbons. We spent way too much time fixing them and dumped them. These were new machines too. I’d never buy an X1 Carbon.

Dells can be fussy about power supplies. Sometimes you need an actual Dell branded power supply to keep them happy. I think you got some systems that can be salvaged with some upgrades. Keep up the good work!

Bro dell's in general whines a lot, i got a Latitude just like the one on the video and first it gave me issues with overheating, then i solved that and Now it shuts itself off, i think is something with the Hard drive cable itself cuz every drive i put on it suffers from the same shit

The Toshiba was not explaining that the battery was bad, it was stating that the RTC (Real Time Clock) was unable to stay consistent. Wether that be because the CMOS (in this cause RTC) battery isn't there, OR BECAUSE the battery is dying. RTC is CMOS in older computers

Fun times with your new laptops. As for your audio may i suggest a wired lapel mic clip on your lapel. I think a 20' from Amazon is inexpensive yet great sounding for your needs.

Great video! The ones that are slow on Windows 11 probably dont have the drivers installedm Try installing all available windows updates. And the low RTC battery on the Toshiba means real time clock, thats a button cell. And the ones that didnt want to boot: Did you try adjusting the boot sequence in the Bios?

to remove background noise you can edit the audio using audacity or something simillar. it can also set the level and tune the audio so your voice is clearer. lots of tutorial for audacity here on youtube.

So Dells have a so called One-Wire system which senses the power output of the charger and uses the power information of the charger (compared with what it expects) to determine if the charger in use is adequate. If the charger is inadequate then the laptop will throttle its power output and will not charge the battery. A lot of cheap 3rd party chargers, or generic chargers, do not have the one-wire signal pin for power detection, so as such the laptop will think you've plugged in an under-rated charger. Hence the slowdowns in Windows and the batteries not charging.

9:10 Fun fact, these laptops often had two HDDs RAIDed together to give increased performance on the extra storage. But the laptops are a nightmare to take apart to get to the mPCIe SSD because they have like 30 screws that keep differing in type

  • @PCIexplorer

7:09 It could be because your WiFi network is 5 or 6GHz only, and the laptop only supports 2.4GHz, or vice versa. Many routers let you either combine 2.4GHz and 5GHz into one network, or show them as separate networks. That's the closest thing I can imagine to the cause of the problem.

I have that Toshiba ultrabook (Japanese version R632, i5 3rd gen). I played with hackintosh, and that puppy can happily run MacOS Big Sur! And to my surprise, that puppy has an amazing battery life, and doing pretty decent for office task on-the-go.

Not a bad lot, I've seen way worse for more money! Also, the problem with the Dell laptop charger is that Dell use a special sensing signal for checking the power capability of the charger. Most 3rd party chargers omit this, hence the laptop cannot determine the AC adapter that is plugged in, and it gives a warning. In some cases, it won't charge any installed battery and also throttles the CPU to a low speed, as it assumes the charger is under-rated.
