Playstation Portal Review: Straight To The Point...

In this review we're talking about the playstation portal. Playstations new handheld that isn't really its own handheld because you need a playstation 5 console in order to be able to use this thing. Its a very niche product. For $200 is the playstation portal worth it? If you have a couple hundred bucks to blow on top of the price of the PS5 then sure I guess...

This is why the gaming industry is shit now. Look at the comments. Do the math people. Portal $200 Ps5 $500 PlayStation link earbuds $200 Let’s not mention games $70 or $130 annually for psplus. Seriously my fellow gamers…seriously. Don’t forget the standard of “it’ll be better with a day one patch.” If this is the future of gaming. Greedy companies selling niche products just so they’ll have a hand in the market…is crap. When in hindsight, Sony could have easily upgraded/updated a psp from old.

Backbone is literally a hassle. What people are not understanding is that we want this system for the convenience of using remote. Yes you can do it on any other device but it’s not convenient and when you’re an adult you don’t necessarily want to drain your phone stream games. I can play Skyrim on Amazon Alexa, do I? No! The backbone is also largely unusable for large hands.

Yeah... I don't know why people try and say its same as playing on your phone.. That's silly by nature.. That's like saying playing your PS5 on 88" screen with surround sound is the same as playing on a 27" monitor. The 8" screen paired with the dual sense controller makes the experience 2x more enjoyable. As far as latency and what not... The iPad, iPhone, Laptop, and whatever else devices a person may use for remote play all suck over time. They aren't as reliable over time and yes it's more cumbersome to use multiple accessories in order to remote play when you can just use 1 (PS portal). for instance if you want to lay in bed with your spouse and game while he/she watches their favorite show... having an ipad with a stand and a controller, or using that tiny phone screen, or a large laptop.... plus controller and stand in the bed might get you kicked out. lol There are multiple reasons why this is superior to just using some other remote play capable device.

  • @DupeTubeTeam

I think the point I was trying to make was that it's a remote play device. No different from the backbones intended use case. Sure it has a bigger screen at 8 inches and adaptive triggers, but is it worth the $100 over the backbone? Well that's completely up to you if it's worth it.

@@DupeTubeTeam I understand that part... but when we do comparisons we have to be careful how we frame them sometimes. That's why i gave the example of playing PS5 on two different size screens. Playing the same console on 18" crt tv is going to be a lot different from playing on 65 inch Oled 120hz. So yes.. it is remote play but it's not the same experience. In my testing I have found that iPads and other devices aren't great long term or comfortable. So far this device has been a better experience regarding lag and latency. Great Vid though man

@@simhawk3986Yet you knew what he meant and still tried to bash him for it...obviously the screen sizes are different between the Portal and your phone but the Remote Play function is the exact same! Its like you completely missed that part or refuse to acknowledge facts. Which in reality, based on testing from numerous other reviewers, the Portal doesnt even have the best connection then ( that award goes to using a regular dual sense controller with phone clip attachment for phone or tablet). The confusion surrounding this product has me thinking this is people's first time buying PS products although some of us has been around since PsP and Vita days to know what is up...

@@MrRenziJack bash him? What are you 12. No one was bashing anyone. I have the device and I have been playing remote play since vita and ps3 days. Remote play has always been a bit of a mess. The problem with giving a review on a product like this (especially day 1) is that all of it is gonna be situational. Most people have crummy internet anyway in the US in regards to uploads which is what really matters here. Most of these reviewers are also experiencing remote play for the first time or have barely ever used it. So doing a side by side comparison day 1 doesn’t really mean as much as people think. Trying using remote play for a week on iPhone, iPad or laptop and then try doing the same on portal. That gives a better idea of which one is more stable long term. Which is what I meant.

I personally don't own any some sort of a phone controller. I have tried the Backbone One and I liked it but it's not something I would spend hours playing PlayStation games. I had the same issue with the PS Vita Remote Play. Also my phone has a 20:9 aspect ratio and unfortunately PS Remote remote expects 16:9 otherwise it will show black bars. Screen size is small. So all these years I have been using PS Remote Play on my laptop, with the DualSense or DUALSHOCK 4 (both PS4 and PS5) connected via USB cable. It works but I would like to have something more portable without the negatives I mentioned above. I think for me PS Portal is the kind of accessory I needed all these years. 16:9 8 Inch, no black bars with the feel of a DualSense controller. $200 is a lot of money. I think it's worth more than a Backbone One if and only if you want to use it only for Remote Play. Obviously you can use the Backbone and any phone controller to play mobile games, stream games, emulation etc, but I don't do that. Great review, it's on point, fast and you are honest which is very important.

Theres a clear difference here between people who will benefit and others who won't. Shared home TVs and gaming parents will benefit. Single homes and young gamers with their bedroom setups won't. I used 5G hotspot and it was flawless, Sony should of been more clear that your wifi network is key, not your internet download speed From a business perspective. If sony has millions of subscribers and they can see from data that a large section of users use remote play on a device using the same network as the PS5, then it becomes a no brainer to create a product for these user at an affordable price with decent profit margins. It's an accessory, the masses need to treat it as such

Out of curiosity, can I play games on the Portal while my parents are watching Netflix on the PS5 at the same time? Or do both the TV and Portal's screens always mirror everything happening on the PS5? I know that games and apps are separated and can swap between them at any time, but it would be cool if they could both be active at the same time via the Portal and TV's 2 separate screens (assuming they can't?)
