Playing with the ChordMap (circle of fifths)

Ойын-сауық

The circle of fifths is not abstract or confusing. It's tangible and easy to use. Let's play with the ChordMap to navigate through harmonic space.

Songwriting is fun when you can actually see what you're doing. I use the familiar patterns of color to explain music theory so you can write songs.

I think, once the modes are explained using the relative chart, it’s important to go to the parallel to really get the “sound” of each mode. For me, at least, when everyone explains the modes and says “ok, now D Dorian is the same notes from the C major scale but starts & ends on D”, etc - all I hear is the Cmajor scale over and over again, just starting on the different degrees. My brain does not “hear” the mode. When you go to parallel, since they all now start on C, you can hear the uniqueness of each mode. It took me forever to get this because everyone that ever tried to explain the modes to me only demonstrated relative. Took forever to recognize the sounds of other modes. Like the Phrygian sound of the “space intro” of “Fly like an Eagle” by Steve Miller. Or the mixolydian scale that Brian May runs in the guitar solo of “Bohemian Rhapsody” etc.

Thank you for your expertise and for creating ChordMap. Certainly a super helpful tool. I'll be buying one of your ChordMap wheels as soon as they're available again (soon please), as it is a truly unique version. Well done! The Beatles were and are amazing songwriters and seeing what they were doing and how they were doing it is just beautiful as well. I'd love to see you break down some of Stings songs using the wheel in the same way, as he's another really interesting and unique songwriter.

I include the Badfinger albums in the Beatles catalog. Also, some of the greatest music is jazz, especially Klaus Doldinger's Passport. And then there is Frank Zappa. That is why I own over 1,200 cd's and 700+ vinyl lps. I myself have 7 cd's, 3 of which are available on KZread at my channel, but only musical geniuses can listen to my dynamic albums. There are 3 off my cd's under the label of group "Big Blue Mountain ", 1 Studio Tapes 2 Yowser.... 3 Tuck it Away Again, if your a music sissy, listen to my music at your own risk. Great video.

I'm 64, and the greatest Beatles album is Magical Mystery Tour, then Abby Road, then Beatles for Sale/ Revolver. Actually, all Beatles albums are great, so, buy them ALL! That is the easiest way. I believe that all groups wrote one album, but the songs wouldn't fit on one album (vinyl lp's held 40 to 45 minutes.

One major question I got for you, I was mapping some stuff out myself and found that the dark spaces between the modes, although they don't resolve to the octave of the root note, they are still useful in the sense that the spaces between the notes are pentatonic scales that are made entirely of inharmonic equivalents. And even though you go in fifths to go from lightest to darkest being from lydian to locrian, on the five Pentatonic spaces, the mood is in tonal order apparently. But in the opposite direction. What can you say about that and pentatonic modes and the five dark spaces on the outermost ring? Did I just prompt you to make another product for Pentatonics?

A Project for You: "Translate" some Beatles' scores to Color-Music "notation" -- 😊🤙🏄☘ ..only moderately kidding! I NEED your Wheel-o'-Demystification for my composition, and for deciphering the "state of mind" of composers of pieces that I love. What I need IN ADDITION is the wheel "expanded" so that it ALSO includes the "Circle of 3rds", AND the "heat map" of the Three-Sides (Stability-Change-Tension) of the Circle-o'-3rds. ..perhaps one or more (independent? transparent?) layers showing those "additional" things? No pressure,.. well, maybe a little. Having a "Master Cypher" that does EVERYTHING would e NICE,.. but may be quite difficult? THANKS so much, indeed, for pulling this all together.!!! 😊🤙🏄☘
