Playing With Liquid Frost From Green Stuff World

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I'm calling this a review of the new product from Green Stuff World called Liquid frost but I am just playing with it really. Spoiler alert, I think it's great! I think the liquid frost really gives a nice frost effect which I think would be great for diorammas and model bases, however not sure if it would be so great for big bits of terrain.

It's a saline solution , the crystal's are salt crystal's forming , you can do similar things yourself by adding salt to boiling water until it doesn't dissolve any longer. Their version just has something in it to make liquid thicker ,i think for easier use since water alone won't stick very well .

I love how that "failed" pond turne dout actually - Do you think these effects would hold up to the rigours of a game model's life?

The 'failed' pond (4.19) looks quite good to me. The effect would be effective on a Hoth based ATST or 'machinery' with a wintery theme. :)

I wonder how complicated it might be to dye it. I think GSW say if you're careful if can be tinted but too much may affect the way it works. Having the frosty effect as a green/blue eldritch energy deal or as it it's a plasma burn/glowing hot fissure thingymajig could be cool, and if you could somehow make it glow in the dark that'd probably look amazing too.

They have a glow in the dark paint thing, I do think it might mess it all up chemically.

When it's a thin layer it's as solid as anything. If you do like a really thick area you could scrape some of the crystalization off but I mean I don't think it's designed for super thick layers!

How long does it take for the effects to show? And is a thicker layer better for say, vertical applications such as on that "planter" you used, did you paint it on thicker?

How hard wearing is this effect? Im wondering about using it for a gaming mini, but am worried the crystals will just fall off when handled? Can you Varnish over the top to increase durability?

How durable is it? is it delicate? It's clearly some sort of chemical that crystallizes when dry, but crystals can be strong or delicate, no idea which are these, if they are not super delicate like their spiderweb liquid it could be great for small but great accents on minis and terrain, otherwise it too would be for dioramas only

  • @TerrainMadeEasy

Great question. The thin layers are pretty damn durable and solid. Where I have done it very very thick it can slightly flake off. So where I did the super thick pool, there are spikes that will come straight off if you touch it, but most of the thinner stuff you see (like on the planter), is like rock solid. So think it depends on the thickness. I should have said this in the video.

Interestingly, if you haven't gone over the frost effect with anything to seal it ( superglue, varnish etc) you can just run it under a tap and it washes off !

What about it reactivating with humidity, say you're handling the model with sweaty hands? Did you try to varnish over it? I'm concerned this might be more something for display models than actual gaming pieces. GSW said something about infusing it with thin cyanoacrylate, but that sounds messy and cumbersome.

I think you missed the way to apply it, I've seen a few other vids where they had really great results with one or two coats of this thing The best way to use it, its covering a surface high enough or with variation to get frost flakes effects On an miniature you can cover members of the body and get the frost coming out quickly On terrains I think you have to apply for exemple on a stalagmite and keep covering where you covered it first, so you can get big frosty crystals coming out of the ground. if you start from the top, a drop of uv resin or something coming from the roof to stack up the layers would also work You can see it in the GSW video, first they build a layer, then they stack their layers on top to make height variations Not a big deal actually the way you tested it, as you said, for your pond an ice effect would be more appropriate. This vid is still a good information

Yeah, I can imagine that being the case, for example on the planter thing I put it on, it looked really good, it does what it says on the bottle but I was trying to push it to something I wanted! I think it's great, I hope I didn't say or imply otherwise :)

  • @Grauskegg

It is what it is.. you are actually growing crystals from this liquid. So you have to invent the scenery for it. Like another youtuber that cut clear plastic pieces (from some random package bought at the store). Then glued the "shards" into broken ice lake, then painted them with slightly diluted ink (ink was the only thing that stuck colorwise). Cheers
