LIKE this video if I should play more Random Instruments! (つ°ヮ°)つ ♪♬
Important Things Down Here ⤵
I’ve been playing electric guitar for over 10 years now, but not too long ago I got a Violin and decided to play for the first time!
Kayrina has been playing violin for years and she has taught me a few things in advance, but I think it’s safe to say I’M USELESS lol
Violin is definitely difficult to master and is intimidating as a beginner, but it is extremely rewarding when you can make it sound beautiful!
I just want to make it NOT sound like a sheep being tossed into a wood chipper…
LOL
If there’s any useful advice or any other instruments you’d like to see me play, leave a comment letting me know ^-^

    Add finger tapes on the fingerboard to help with being in tune and practice scales as much as possible and puts Starbucks straws in the top f holes to help with keeping your bow close to the bridge and overall just relax it’s easy to tense up when you’re playing the violin but playing relaxed makes it so much more easier with the bow technique relaxing your fingers is a big thing as well and don’t hunch over make you sure you have a upright posture chin up shoulders relaxed and scroll (the thing that looks like a cinnamon roll at the tip of the violin) up and don’t put your whole arm motion into pulling the bow it should just be you forearm and wrist and fingers in the motion given with time you should be descent the violin is hard but like anything with time you’ll get the hang of it

  • @mark012498
    @mark0124984 жыл бұрын

    Hey man, I've been playing for over a decade and a young professional and there are a few basic things that really help starting the violin. I know you mentioned that your partner Kayrina is a great violinist also but I would also love to offer some free digital lessons to you in addition to her as a long time fan of your content. Please do not hesitate to hit me up if that is the case! Everything that I'm about to type out would be much easier and quicker to explain over a live video instead! Firstly, you want to make sure that the violin is in a comfortable position, with the shoulder rest lying across your shoulder and collarbone. You actually have the general angle of where the violin should go, although make sure that your left hand isn't raising the neck of the violin too high. On the topic of the left hand - let your left arm naturally fall and flop including your hand and notice its naturally gently cupped shape. You should then swing this arm around gently anticlockwise from 6 o clock (facing the ground) to roughly 12 o clock to place your hand on the neck. You should gently let the violin sit on the side of your thumb instead of squeezing the neck of the instrument. Most of the time, the violin will be help up between your jaw and shoulder and therefore there shouldn't be any extra pressure between your left hand and the violin neck. The bow arm is a similar story of naturalness. If you flop your right hand down, you will notice that your middle two fingers will naturally be slightly closer together than the index and pinky fingers - this will be your natural bow hold shape. From this position, the middle two fingers and the thumb (which should be curled gently) will form a circle and you should find that the side of your thumb is in contact with your middle two fingers. This will form the base of your bow hold. Now with the bow (which you can assist holding up with your left hand for now in order to position your right hand correctly) you can reform that initial shape once more but placing the same point the thumb was in contact with fingers now between the leather wrapping on the bow and the ebony heel (frog) of the bow with the middle two fingers falling over the stick to form our circle once more. You then want to place your pinky finger on the segment one *behind* the top segment of the octagonal shape that is on the bottom of the bow. You want to keep this pinky relaxed and curled as it acts as a counterbalance to the weight of the stick - this will take a while to master so do not worry if the pinky slips often. Just make sure that you avoid straightening the pinky and tensing it. Then slightly turn your wrist anticlockwise so that the second segment of your index finger is resting on the metal wrapping of the bow. You should now have an ideal bow hold where you can feel the weight of the stick in between your fingers without gripping it. Violin bows are typically between 58-62g and you should be able to feel that entire weight in your fingertips. One of the most important things with the violin that you correctly identified is tone production with the bow. One of the best ways to start making a great sound is to just play some free open strings with the whole bow. Placing your bow on the A string near the heel, start your down bow (going outwards) whilst maintaining that bowhold and make sure that you naturally push slightly forward with your hand and wrist as you go out as well. In order to draw a straight bow parallel to the bridge, all of our joints work in tandem at different points in the bow in order to keep it straight. With the up bow when you reach the tip of the bow, imagine that you're coming in with your wrist, almost as if there is a string attached to the top of your wrist and that it's being pulled up and in back towards the heel. The rest of your arm should naturally follow, allowing the friction of the bow against the string to resonate. This should all be done slow in order to gain a great deal of control throughout the entire bow.

  • @SnakeandFox
    @SnakeandFox4 жыл бұрын

    Take my advice, coming from someone who’s played for five years: •Use your elbow, rather than your entire shoulder to bow on the string •Be sure to bow parallel to the bridge (The small wooden piece near the small tuning screws) •The long black thing where the strings hang over is called the fingerboard •Violins can change with the weather (ex. If it’s colder the strings will become out of tune) •The bow hold should have four fingers rest on the end of the bow (the Frog). They should all rest on the second knuckles, the pinky stands rather than rests. The thumb is placed in a small gap between the frog and the stick of the bow, bent at a 90 degree angle. Finally, the index finger is placed a bit further from the rest of the other fingers, allowing to balance the pressure between it and the thumb so it doesn’t sound all scratchy. If I missed anything, I’ll be sure to add it. Good luck Papa Merk!

    Hey man. There’s a couple things that you can do to help with the fingers and the bow usage. You can buy tape for the fingerboard from a local shop to mark off where your fingers are supposed to go. Then correlate those marks with the notes on the treble staff. You can also mark the center of your bow with the same red tape so you know where the middle is so you can play in the 3 sections, upper, lower, and middle, depending on the dynamics and articulation. Start off basic like with twinkle twinkle or a simple tune that you can get sheet music for. Then it’s all about your left hand wrist position and hand shape as well as your right hand bow hold and arm movement. The best way to learn these is by watching others so look up some videos and or performances. I love the instrument and it’s a great one to learn for anyone. Hope to see an update in a few weeks. Keep up the great content!

    I’ve been playing violin and viola for about 3 years now, and the best advice I can give you is your bow hold. Your hand is too tense, you gotta relax it more and make your up and sown bows more smooth. You also need more pressure into the strings , but don’t apply it with force from your thumb, you gotta lean into the string with your bow. Some google exercises for this would be just to play an open string until you don’t hear the screeching of the string. You also gotta listen for the ringing or the strings when you play. When going up bow, your hand has got to adjust as well by moving into a slanted position , as well as the same corosponding downbow. You seem like you already know where most of your fingers are, so your intonation is pretty good, you just gotta work on getting a nice, steady, constant sound with your bow, and you achieve that with your bow holds. Hope this helps!

    As a violinist for about 9 years that is majoring in music performance, you have no idea how much this means to me 😭. Also you are very correct when you say it is a difficult instrument. It is especially hard to pick up at the beginning due to it's lack of ease of use and many variables. Compared to guitar it is more difficult seeing as you need amazing technique from right and left hand both to even get a sound out of it. Also there are no frets, so be prepared to be very out of tune until you are used to it. Although it's hard, learning it to a basic degree is very rewarding! As you can do many things on the violin that you cannot do on any other instrument. If you wish to begin learning the violin moderately well, I have some advice. Basics are your friend! Most new violin players will start with a song in mind and begin trying to learn how to play it as you would on a guitar, and sadly this will not work with the violin. A good way to work your way up there is to learn the basics, pretend you are making a delicious cake (end performance) first you need the ingredients. I advise first taking care of the most dangerous aspects of playing violin, and when saying that I mean the techniques that are the easiest to create bad habits for. For these techniques it is important to master first! Examples would be posture, how to correctly hold your bow (usually the most difficult, but also most importaint), make sure your left wrist is straight while holding the instrument, and learning the distances between half notes and whole notes with your fingers. There are more but I advise starting there. Then it is good to do what is important on all instruments, start with scales, maybe one string at first and finally to all strings. Once you can handle the instrument work on tone (making the sound non-scratchy and nice). Once you get there you are basically on your way to learning some music with practice! Other more advanced techniques such as vibrato, pizzicato (plucking), articulation, etc. Are nice to learn along the way. If you attempt this good luck! It would mean so much if you tried, but it isn't for everyone so no hard feelings if you keep it for when you are bored. Either way don't knock it until you try it and don't give up because it won't be easy until you have the basics down!

I was in your shoes I had NO idea how to play guitar. so I started with the bass because it had also had 4 strings. how I learned violin WAS holding it like a guitar but we had to "pluck" or "PIZZ" (HEHEHE) until we got the technique down. then after a month we moved onto the shoulder. I would say we didn't use the bow until 1 year after getting the technique of plucking the strings. boi did the calluses hurt. Cleaning the strings help massively when picking (getting all rosin off), find the notes such and add finger tapes, sit straight chin up with instrument up, flat feet, small things that help in major ways (in my opinion)

    quick little tips, put a little more or less pressure on the bow and push and pull a little faster with longer strokes to make it sound clearer, to make the bow less bouncy loosen it a little by twisting the knob on the end. hope this helps!

    Tbh eric... theres no easy way out for the violin XD everything is difficult for the violin, or at least the way my professor makes me work. Bow hold, posture, the bows position on the strings, left hand fingers, pizzicato. Gotta make sure all of these are correct. Oh and then of course notes. Now remember all this while playing paganini caprice 24

    To get ur bow to stop bouncing, it all boils down to how smooth the motion is of you playing a note. Eventually you will find the right technique lol. It’s smooth and involves your whole arm moving smooth like a spring. Also from the wrist. It’s gotta sway like your arm is under water. Also, you need to look into fingerings for scales. Start with D minor. After it become muscle memory for your fingers, it opens up a whole new realm of what u can play. Still, sounds pretty good for your first time even attempting to play. Ik that when I did, it sounded like a dying cat 😁 keep practicing :)

    Learning to play twinkle twinkle little star as a beginner really helped me. My biggest problem was fingering and my fingers would often roll or fall out of place making the sheep in a wood chipper sound. Sadly though Idk any advice that would make learning it easier but just learning anything new it takes failure to learn

    I've been playing the violin for almost 10 years now. It's extremely hard to self teach, technique is VERY important. I know people who have been playing as long as I have who aren't much better than you were in this video, simply because they don't care about the little things. You basically have to have some sort of professional one on one instruction to learn it, I know kids who are very good with just how we we're taught in school. However, they are very talented musicians in general.

    Get accustomed to the bow and then move to fingerboard. Once you get a feel for the bow and the angles of it, then it easier to focus on the fingers and getting them in tune. Taking it one step at a time is key. Hope you enjoy it, it’s a great instrument :)

    Holding a violin and plucking as not a bad way to start off, it'll help you learn fingering patterns. As for playing with a bow, just play with confidence, push a little harder on the strings so it doesen't bounce everywhere, and don't worry if it still sounds sour, that just makes it more hilarious XD. hope this helped :)

    ''It's not the type of thing you can pick up an play'' This is very true, i bought one at a boot sale, took it out, everything proceeded to fall apart, neck piece, strings snapped when i used the worn long boi which then snapped, fret then came off and tension points then fell out, wood then proceeded to disassemble itself..

    add stickers on the fingerboard for easier finger placement with ur left hand. Also make sure the bow is tightened correctly and it gets much easier to play if you have music notes in front of you instead of freestyling

    If it helps and you want to learn to play violin, you can put stickers on the neck to memorise where different notes are (e.g. on the G string, put a sticker on where the A would be then over time remove the stickers as you memorise where it is)

    Fingerboard- put lines of fingering tape on it (you can look up the proper positions) Bow- a characteristic sound is produced by two factors: pressure and how much bow you use. The more bow you use, the more sound you make. As for the pressure you kinda just have to feel out what the right amount is so you don’t get that bouncing thing (I had that problem when I started) Bow movement- Try to keep the bow going in a straight line between the bridge and the fingerboard. When you’re starting out, think push, pull, push, pull Your bow hand looks pretty good👍

    One thing I would suggest is definitely build on it. Obviously as beginners you won’t be able to work the bow as a player who’s been doing it for years. Begin with plucking G and D major scale. Getting use to the finger patterns... in this case it would be a 2-3 pattern. Once you get use to that you can probably work on HOLDING the bow. Just holding. Tension in your right hand comes from the way you hold the bow. Maybe work on playing open strings and play the first 4 notes of each scale. I’ve been playing for 10 years myself and college is no joke lol. Even during this quarantine I still had to practice..... have fun !!

    Violin player of ten years here, for me the only way I learned was a teacher in person, if you try and learn it by yourself you will most likely get a lot of technique wrong, and it’s hard to reverse muscle memory. But I’m general, bow hold is a little weird, your entire bow stroke is like 1 inch, right elbow is out of wack, left hand needs tuning for sure, and don’t try shifting until you get first position. Have fun tho

    You can buy a bit of tape which shows little lines which act as frets, it’s very good for beginners, also learn the proper bow and violin bow, watch some KZread videos or google it and practice it, holding it correctly is very important so that your hands don’t hurt and you can play well
