For a stock transmission with 375k miles on it, and then finally taking a crap while pushing 53" tires you can't even be mad at it. It was a trooper.

What will help your power train IMMENSELY is gearing down those axles or swapping in a set thats bigger, stronger and mostlikely geared for 53s and the extra weight they carry. A little formula i have used for many yrs is .12 X whatever tire size = pretty accurate ratio. Yours happens to be 6.36, however they dont manufacture that specific ratio but they do make a 6.71. Downside with the 6.71 is that the pinion head is TINY and they tend to break first under a serious load. A much easier and better down the road solution i would suggest a set of 9 ton meritor axles like the ones that were under cougars, rg 33's, lmtv's etc etc. Ive built many buggies over the yrs and gearing is the absolute first I go after as soon as a substancially larger tire goes on, the upside to the meritors is that a large variety have planetaries in the hubs and have air lockers already in the diffs. Lots of work to get them under the truck and working properly but that'll be the last set of axles you'll ever need.

Right on big_ute. I had been looking at the mrap axles on govplanet but I only ever seen them up as singles axles and not a front and back combo. I was also thinking of just going with some 5 ton axles becase their is a abundice of them out there but I wonder about brakes on all these. I'm pretty sure everything is air brakes and I bet the conversion is not cheap at all. For now I believe im going to swap in some 5.38s after we get the new transmission and torque converter from the shop. I also got to put in a proper transmission cooling system and not rely on the stock one that is in the radiator. Thank you a ton for the advice and ill get my eyes open for some meritor axles.

@@PaperBeatsRock I'd do a Driveshaft brake or a brake rotor on the input side of the axel........... TONS of monster trucks and very large custom rigs do that, 2 F250 rotors, to stop a monster truck or you could always get something larger, my 91 Kodiaks rotors compared to my 05 F250. the rotors in the front of that thing are massive its a Crew cab 7500 truck, custom dually bed, ..... but yeah best bet some hefty axels get the gearing right, i'd also upgrade to a aftermarket transmission cooler,

Another option are portal axles. They already lower the axle ratio considerably. Plus they offer awesome ground clearance. However, I don’t know how strong they are or aren’t. The Factory Dana 60 and Sterling can be built pretty bullet proof. Of course more than one way to skin a cat.

The stock cooling system on the new trucks are massive. Haven’t had any issues with the truck but I lowered gears to 4.88 and I have lockers front and rear.

Right on man. Yeah, I completely overlooked keeping the transmission cool. Also with my tuner, I can set it to flash if something is outside my preset ranges, but sadly I had not set that for my transmission. I have it only for my EGT and Oil Temps. Definitely going to spend the time and redo that. I really like your Megatron truck. I was thinking about putting 1 or 2 of my 53's in the bed as you did. I just wonder about that much weight back there when bouncing around and how much force that amount of mass will put on everything.

You have a good sized external cooler already, you can upgrade to a mishi moto cooler and it’s even bigger, but you really need a set of gears in that thing, I would source out a f550 axle with the 5.38 gears in it, front and rear. Especially if you wanna play in 2wd. It’s an easier swap than throwing 2.5 tons or 5 tons underneath.

  • @PaperBeatsRock

You are 100% correct Kyle. We do have a aftermarket cooler with a electric fan coming so that it moves air when the truck is not moving that much air. Also we are working on getting some axles. I don't mind the work to put in the bigger military axles and honestly would prefer to get some because all the other componits will hold up better to the abuse. I know my ball joints hate me.

We were just up in your neck of the woods on New Year's Eve day on I84 going over Blue Mountain when that crazy idiot shot it out with the cops. He literally was directly across the highway from us pointing his revolver all over the place! We witnessed him carjack the pickup which was a HUGE mistake for him because that dude was a retired LEO and I believe he shot the chucklehead criminal in the head down the road. #oneless Your truck is legit.
