Was he playing behind the bassist intentionally? I'm not trying to be rude, I'm just genuinely curious

In short, play a fill, but don’t land on the 1. Keep the fill going past the 1, and land somewhere else. Lol. That’s it.

yeah dude, that's level 1. then start practicing finishing on the 1&, 2, etc. Thats 2. Now write a few syncopated kicks and practicing hitting them during the fill. Cool you got 3. Now practice phrasing in a cross-rhythms. Now add the kicks to the cross-rhythm phrasing. Now apply this to an 8-bar form. Afterwards go for 32, and remember the only 1 you can hit the the 1 every 32 bars, and play the form. Now sing a tune while doing it. First AA', then into AABA Final level, get the odd-bar forms (all the things, alone together, etc) and ace that. Now use your creativity to find new ways to fuck up while playing syncopated snare notes on top of this. Seriously, over the bar playing is so important in jazz. Too bad he didnt take it further than the fills. Then again, it only gets as deep as the river it's sailing on ^^
