Playing in Your First Event in Disc Golf | Beginner Tips and Tricks

Спорт

I played disc golf for 7 years before I honestly even thought about signing up for my first event, but I know others who have signed up within two weeks of finding out about the sport. Whether you're a veteran of the game or fresh on the course, we all have to experience the moment of playing in your first event.
I recently had the opportunity, not to play in my first event but rather play in my first Disc Golf Pro Tour event! While I spent the week prepping for my DGPT event, I started focusing in on some key principles and ideas that I wanted to keep at the forefront of my mind. I thought, why not share those same principles and see if they can apply to players diving into their first event? What were those thoughts? You'll have to watch to find out!!
Have you heard of the Birdie Fam? It's a community of disc golfers who are striving to excel and improve together. We are going to talk about your struggles and plateaus in a safe and healthy environment. When we come together as a family, we'll grow together as people. So if you're ready to take that next step in your disc golf game, and start improving with the greatest community in Disc Golf then head on over to the Patreon website!!

I've always struggled when people say "You aren't any good, so you can't coach." That just doesn't make any sense. The best athletes in the world have coaches that cannot perform as well as they do, because the ability to perform is not the same as the ability to teach. They are not the same skill. Thanks for everything you do Robbie, keep up the great work teaching, and improving in your own game.

Honestly I had to ask myself how I would shoot if i played a pro level distance and woods course, and he still did well. Scott stokely is a great player and shot plus 25 at Jonesboro.. all it takes a few double bogies each day and that’s easy to do.

I my word "we" were just talking about Robbie C at work. We do said often both in learning phase of disc golf thus this channel gold for us. My friend is brand new. I am very old and so though playing for three years now I would call my level "the social level" or "do something fun while getting my hike for the day done". Even though Mr. Robbie C teaching in his vids we both are sure the cat can play based upon his form while doing his teaching. So exciting that we were right: Motor City tournament is real event.

By the way I have done a few events always entering the level I know I will not "win". As one of my boys that did wrestling as a kid said, "I would rather finish in the middle of the pack wrestling varsity than win a JV event." It was funny/sad to see one of my disc golf friends win AM4 and just get trolled for sandbagging. My friend on a good day is AM4. Fun to play with given he does make a handful of good shots each round. He throws these In between throwing deep into the woods or finding the geometric center of a pond. He had never played so well and was not able to enjoy the results of his best day ever by far given the trolling.

Don't know how I missed this when you first released this video, but you are right on everything. I love your attitude when it comes to playing. I played competitive tennis for years until one day it just clicked. I was pushing myself so hard to do well that I lost the love of the game. It was just a job I really didn't want to do. Since starting disc golf, I have told myself I wasn't going to make the same mistake. While I haven't played in a tournament yet, I plan on doing so in the near future. My expectations are to do my best on that day, and not worry about where I end up. If I shoot well, then great. If not, then I know what I can work on, but either way, I have to have fun while doing it. Thanks for the great video as always. Keep up the good work.

Plenty of good stuff here. Thanks for the content, Robbie. My first event - about a month ago - was so much fun and did wonders to highlight the strengths and weaknesses of my game. Tons of penalty strokes. Just getting that knowledge helped me improve. Interesting card. My second event - two weeks ago - was even better. No penalty strokes. Played to my strengths. Great card, lots of fun. Next weekend, third event. I'm excited. Am I good? No. Well, no. But, no. I am enjoying the journey to get better, which will never end. Looking forward to my first round with Robbie C - need to get that on the schedule.

Your channel is amazing! Only played in 2 tournaments so far, however the 2nd of those was similar to what you mentioned; high winds & trees falling all around (was intense) that being said, I had only played the course 1st before the tournament & the conditions were quite the opposite of the event. A lot of overstable discs & understanding that everyone is playing in the exact same conditions. I placed 9th with 20 over. You have been a huge help in keeping my confidence on the course. I use your advice not only for myself, but to anyone I encounter who has questions. For this and so much more I say thank you.

Just a thought, I believe that anytime you test yourself, you get results and data. How honestly you examine and logically assemble those is important. Goals and expectations should be reset after each test. Pushing forward, even if it means an initial lateral or backward move is what's important.

I was a my first tournament last week, I played extremely poorly bad putts, long upshot, but I had ton of fun talk with the card mates and meeting new people. Plus the round I played after the tournament I beat my personal best on the course would say my first year of discgolf been amazing 😊

As a crappy player that is trying to get better, I can relate to the frustration of playing bad in front of others when you know that you should and could be playing better. I need to work on being more positive though though the bad rounds. Learn from it and move on. In the end, it is just a game. People will most likely not remember you for your bad round but for you being a bad card mate. Be a good person first and a good disc golfer 2nd.

How many times have I said "I parked this one in the practice round" meanwhile I'm standing 90 feet away from the tee after hitting first available. It is true that no matter how much you practice the course, it all comes down to the morning or day of the tournament round and what you do with it in the moment.

Howdy... first PDGA event Sunday May 1. I get 4 Sundays/year out of the pulpit at my church where I'm senior pastor. Wife wasn't thrilled I'm burning one of our vacation weeks playing disc golf, but she let me sign up anyway. Is she awesome, or what?!!!

I dont understand why everyone that I've seen give advice says to wait to enter a tournament. I guess I just went backwards on all of it. I entered a tournament before I ever played a full round. other than the one practice round I had before the event (minus a couple of holes). Granted I did not do well, at all. but it gave me an idea of where I stood and gave me opportunities to see actual improvement based on rating.

Stopped playback to respond to your "people tell me that I suck statement and I shouldn't teach" comment. I have been playing for less than 2 years. I find your videos to be the most helpful because you are not "the best". I think the most important thing you do is show the process you used to get to where you are now, and the process you use to improve. Watching a 5 minute video of the best pros saying "hold it like this and just throw it in from 200ft away" is not too valuable to me. Great players often are not good coaches. Lets face it, playing and coaching/teaching are two entirely different things. In any sport. In anything. Keep up the videos. I enjoy them. And if any one give you shit, use the standard NY response . Tell them to f-off. (I had to edit that for Facebook, but you know what I am saying 🙂
