Key Factor Stopping You From Throwing Far in Disc Golf | Beginner Tips and Tricks

Спорт

KZread can be a dark place for your confidence when it comes to disc golf. I've spent many hour-long sessions watching video after video on how to throw correctly, only to find that it barely seems to transfer out onto the field or course. This frustration can cause me to lose hope in not only my future within the game but honestly my hope in youtube in general.
With the number of coaches growing daily here on youtube, it can be tough to implement all of this advice into our game to try and get an edge on the competition. I wanted to take a moment to address something that rarely gets talked about when it comes to implementing form changes, especially when it comes to distance. What is the key factor holding you back? You'll have to watch to find out!!

Hahahaha the Frankenstein stage got me! Everytime I do field work I feel I'm in Frankenstein mode lmao til I get to the course and everything feels much better and SMOOTHER. You guys point out things I don't usually think of then I use that or change it and incorporate it into my routine. When I started a year ago I couldn't throw much more than 250ish but with these youtube cats I've used a lot of what you guys say and Frankenstein'ed myself to throw 400ft+ now but alot of time in fields and on the course. Thus saying helped me understand "Don't practice till you get it right, practice till you don't do it wrong."

I used to play a bunch back in 2008-2011ish and had no idea what I was doing. The first time I tried backhand I went hard and pulled my shoulder completely out of the socket. So then I switched to fore-handing everything and actually got half decent with my longest ace being 201ft @ hole 15 Sedgley woods Philly. I always used 2 discs. I used a beaten Champion Valkyrie for everything but putts which I had a super beat Discraft Soft Challenger II in Elite-X plastic I think. I managed to get pretty good with controlling my angles for all kinds of shots with the Valkyrie. A few months back I finally started playing again being super careful about my shoulders and pages like yours have been a huge help getting me throwing properly and enjoying disc golf more than ever. Thanks! I actually have a decently consistent backhand and forehand now that I still have a ways to go on but I always say the better you become at a thing the more fun you'll have doing it:) Smooth and easy with proper form beats rushing and using power without it every time and it's great to not hurt yourself. When I'm having an off day I meditate and try again slowly and if I pull anything a little I stop immediately then take a short break before. Keep up the great work Robbie.

Subconsciously and conscious, I know you have improved my game. Thank you! And the point that you sometimes take two steps back to take 3 steps forward is right on point. I think I am on step two of three on my way back. My last 2 rounds have seen significant improvement and the excitement of heading to the course has changed as well. Confident! Keep the videos, content coming!

My biggest lesson while learning has been just cause you think you know something doesn't mean you shouldn't investigate other perspectives to verify. Example: I watched Danny's drills video and did the water bottle drill (with a disc so I didn't break my fingers though) and was like, oh yeah, I am creating the snap I need here. Month or two later, came across Overthrow's Windmaker drill and completely skipped it because I thought "I do that part correctly." Well, decided to go back and watch that video about a week ago, turns out I am over rotating my shoulders and my 'whoosh' sound (i.e. release point) is way to far in front of my body 11 to 12ish instead of 10 o'clock. Now I am back at a standstill teaching myself this part all over again.

I started watching your content a few weeks back and the thing that stuck with me was the “Work from the basket-back”. I just started working on my putting and upshots extensively. I can really relate to this video. My "feel" made me think I had fixed my high reachback but then I brought a tripod to the field and filmed myself. What was "real" was I still was going to my upper left deltoid on my RHBH . I've done several sessions and realize my elbow is too low and my swing is not on the Plane of Play. I currently throw a random 310' and hope that fixing the off-plane swing will get me more consistency and distance. Great video !!

Robbie C, another great video. One of the most difficult things to do is to do the field work if you want to get better. I am like, "Hey, I live near a disc golf course, I will just play a bunch of holes and get better there. In some ways, it can help to get lower scores, because you are figuring out which lines fit with the best disc for each shot. Rarely does improvement transfer over to another disc golf course because each hole is different in layout, distance, etc.

Dude that is a super important thing to point out. I have the opposite problem going into an arched back when throwing. When I tried to fix it the first time it felt like my nose was almost touching the ground. In reality though the changes were minimal. I also struggle with the length of my x-step. I even trief shuffle stepping and even though I felt like I was doing a shuffle step, it still was a big x-step. Feeling the "change" and seeing the lack thereof is very weird and very frustrating. Really happy to hear that leaning into the opposite extrem worked for you and is more possible than it feels.

The timing of this video couldn't be better. Been working with a coach and have changed up two or three things in my form (real) but its actually 20-30 things about form (feel). Anyway everything has felt super janky, but the proof is in the puddin' sauce. In the last three days i smoked a buddy i haven't beat before (he's my go to playing partner), shot three strokes under my best at the local course and recorded a throw that went 60' further than my previous record. Stoked, I sent a video to my coach and I'm still clearly doing the thing that is limiting my distance and accuracy. Just goes to show that though my efforts and focus just to get those minor, visually imperceptible changes have already resulted in slight improvements. Once the form clearly changes I'll likely be able to compete on a level I'm happy with and of course enjoy the game so much more. Happy improving friends!

I think filming yourself is the single most helpful thing you can do to improve your form, and almost everyone has a powerful camera on their phone. If you're by yourself just set it up on your bag, a post, log or whatever, or get a cheap tripod. Feel vs real, is real lol. You really do need to over-exaggerate whatever you're trying to fix, and film yourself again until you see the change and it becomes second nature. Great coaching advice Robbie.

Good tips! The camera breakdown is such an overlooked strategy, yet the most effective way of getting accurate feedback and visualizing the throw from the perspective you are used to learning it from. I'd recommend going out and recording at least 10 throws in a row, this tends to iron out any of those subconscious adjustments you make because you know you are being filmed.

When I was watching videos today, I felt like my throws were getting better just practicing my form, but then went I went to a small course, my throws were suddenly really bad. After watching this I now realize that I probably wasn't actively trying to make my throws better (like the ones I did at home), but I was just doing what I thought was the right adjustment for my form. This really helped me be more proactive in my form, thanks!

Love this video. One thing that you didn’t touch on that I think is a great note, is that as you introduce a different form, your disc are going to fly differently than you remember them flying. This was an issue for me when correcting my form. But don’t be discouraged. You have to in a sense “re-learn” your bag when you “re-learn” form or introduce something new. Great content Robbie! Been playing 9 years and I’m still all over the place. I’ve probably thrown with some really nice form about 1 outta 1000 shots. The other 999 where, bad timing, jerky(not dried meat), both or I was just tired. I still play but I throw more than I play. This is a fact, if you get good traction with your fingers, keep your wrist planned out flat with your forearm, lag the disc back ( don’t reach back) and let it sling forward once your foot is planted, your hips shift, your waist will turn and the disc will come out nose down with above average velocity. And find that release point... if straight out in front of you is 12 then on full effort shot release at 10 and the disc will come out in front of you, not grip locked... Hope this helps someone.

3:51 Wow. Very well articulated. Ive been trying to figure out how to put those two ideas together for a long time. I think getting "into a groove" or being "In the zone" has to do with letting go of the executive action thoughts and letting your practice come through as more subconscious actions. Thank you! Very important stuff to think about

I’m 63 and was an athlete in sports in high school and college. This is the first time to see this channel and will come back. I’ve only been playing a few years. I just watched others that could throw far and I tried to copy their form. I started with the one step but as I tried to do the run up I couldn’t throw any further. After watching this I realized I forgot the feel vs real that I learned in golf tennis etc. How could I have forgotten this. Great insight I needed to be reminded of. Got to go get my video going. I’ll be back. Thanks. 😎

Have been playing since the mid-1980's. In truth, I never showed much improvement over the years because there were not many players in my area and instruction was impossible to find. That said, I spent years reinforcing bad habits. Now I am in my 50's and trying to unlearn bad habits that have been reinforced for decades. I dont worruy too much about nailing long drives. Rather, I am focusing on improving my upshots & short game with good form. Tough but doable with the right attitude. I appreciate your videos!

Feel vs real is an old golf aphorism that butch Harmon and tiger woods used in the 90s. They talked about on their golf central segments from back then. It's a great saying nonetheless! Great content as usual.

Bought a 20$ camera stand that holds a cell phone. When I recorded my self and saw what I was doing and made tweaks literally changed 2 things and went from 345 ' to 415' according to udisc app in only a month .. that meant a lot to me because now the 345 shots took less effort and were more accurate. Awesome video it's pure truth 👌

I hate when people say, "it's not a sport." Curling can be considered a sport, but not Disc golf? Get out of here lol. Great video Robbie!
