Playing In The VW Bus | Underwood Garage 12

Ойын-сауық

Join my wife and I as we do our best to get this old VW camper bus back on the road.
In this episode, I update on the work I have done and upholstery I completed.
Slowly this VW bus restoration is coming together! Thanks for watching!
We hope to do some traveling and camping in it once it is restored and roadworthy.

Clark! Dude, just rebuild it yourself! It's a 3d Lego kit puzzle where the parts and pieces only go together in one specific way. You can do it! I've done it! Happy to help provide info to refresh your engine.

Found you through VW Life, just watched these videos all this evening 😁 gave me inspiration to get working on the 71 Westfalia I just got in August. My Buses don't fit in our garage, I am at the mercy of the Pittsburgh weather. I did get my 78 Westfalia running with a lot of help from my friend Susan (she also has a 78 Westfalia and she has a beautiful 56 Oval window Beetle she restored )She knows much more of the mechanics than I do. When my kids were toddlers they were playing in the 77 Tin Top Westfalia I had and did snap off my turn signal lever, fortunately I had an extra in my parts shed. Anyway thanks for making and sharing these videos, I hope you are all well 😊

Hey all y'all Underwoods! Daddy Clark, Momma Hilary and Baby Rosie! This is just the tonic I needed as I'm in the midst of my third (3rd!) week working from home. No kids to tend to, just a wife and a live-in mother-in-law. Really love seeing how things are progressing down in your neck of the world and seeing how much little Rosie is growing. Mom and dad; you do good work! Love it all.

You folks are totally charming. Thanks for another episode. My brother in law is an ace VW mechanic. He worked for a VW dealership here in Dallas for twenty years or so. Hit me up if you want me to ask him to look at your bus. He’s retired now, but still races his drag strip bug.

Glad I found you again. I’m gonna start posting videos on my bus soon. I had the same problem with the trans as well. Got mine rebuilt but haven’t had time to put it in. Paid like $1,800 to get it done and drove about an two hours to get it done. But I hope it’s worth it. Prob best place in Cali. Ranch Performance transaxle.

the bus looks wicked!!! just ordered some new TMI seat upholstery from JBugs, gonna take a couple months for them to be made but hopefully they'll look anywhere near as good as yours! my aunt gave me her 1972 bay window bus, and this is a heck of a first car! I don't know how to drive a manual, and from what I have learned about VWs, the shift knob isn't very authoritative when it changes, like you don't feel a big CLUNK when it switches gears. I am excited to see where I go with it! hope your family is staying safe in quarantine!

Phillip at Polk's is a close friend of mine, and he completely rebuilt the 1600 in our 71 Westy. The previous owner threw a rod bearing, and now he has it running as good as new after the rebuild. I second the re-torqueing of the head, by the way. Would love to meet you and the family if you ever come this way (we live just inside Arkansas). Thanks for all of your videos!

Oil leaks are not a great reason to do a full rebuild. Loads of expense for a simple problem. Check the torque on the head nuts. Not hard to do if you have a torque wrench and it may be just one loose one which allows the leak. Follow the correct order when checking torque on them and use the right torque value depending on your stud size. Compare studs to a known bolt if in doubt or use a dial caliper. dunebuggywarehouse.com/https/air-cooled-vw-type-1-cylinder-head-torque-sequence-cheat-sheet.html For popping out of 4th this is a common problem and COULD be the transmission, or it could be worn transmission mounts. Check the transmission to frame upper mounts and make sure they are good. It also could be the bushing on the nose cone to hockey stick, or a bent hockey stick itself. Take the transmission out and remove the nose cone cover and inspect the bushing and the hockey stick itself. Also make sure the other bushings in the shift rod have been replaced, which will tighten up shifting for any transmission anyway. Sometimes any of these things make 4th pop. If you want a transmission rebuild Rancho Performance is very highly regarded. I just got my transmission rebuilt by them but have not yet reinstalled it, but am excited to get there.
