Playing From the Heart with Tim Pierce | Dipped in Tone

Zach goes it alone on this episode to interview session guitarist, 6-string storyteller, and prominent KZreadr and online guitar instructor Tim Pierce. As a player, Pierce’s guitar has spent decades at the top of the charts by way of songs by Bon Jovi, Goo Goo Dolls, Phil Collins, Madonna, Dave Matthews Band, Bob Dylan-whose recent Shadow Kingdom features the guitarist holding down the rhythm-and so many others.
Pierce discusses his biggest influences and favorite guitar sounds, seeing ZZ Top in their early stages “at their finest”-“I was floored”-and tells how he learned how to play rhythm guitar “on the job.” He also shares advice for crafting excellent guitar parts.
These days, Pierce says his session work is mostly for friends and family. Instead, he focuses on his popular KZread channel, where he posts interviews, tips, and more. It’s a passion for the guitarist, and he and Zach get deep into the nuts and bolts of his KZread life-from how many thumbnails can he makes for each episode (a whole lot) to how he comes up with his ideas for videos.
“I did one thing for decades,” Pierce says of his life as a guitarist for hire. “That I knew I could do … I just wanted to be a recording guitar player.” About 15 years ago, he says he reevaluated his goals and says he “discovered some people who were doing business online” who inspired him to give KZread a go. “It just seemed like something, with all my limitations, that I could pull off.” After a decade doing full-time sessions and building his online presence, Pierce eventually switched to becoming a full-time KZreadr.

Hey, Zach. Thanks for having Tim on. My wife and I had the great luck to have met Tim at Norm's maybe five years ago. He's as wonderful a guy as he seems. We discovered we graduated from high school the same year and, eventually, that we were born five days apart, he in Albuquerque and myself in Bakersfield. So we watched world events and heard AM radio in cars at the same age. In your interview, he frequently refers to the way he was raised and each time, I keep murmuring, "Exactly!!!" For many of our era, seeking personal attention cuts against our values. Humility beats attention. Honesty is the default and bragging just won't do. So yeah, I've seen many Tim interviews and will always continue to watch, even if the story is the same. They make sense and make me feel good. Also, we grew up for a long stretch without tech. A quartz watch seemed phenomenal! The present landscape doesn't feel like the norm. It feels new. We easily detect a change. Naturally, Tim's generational perspective resonates with me. It's very valuable. And Tim is indeed a treasure. Thanks again. -G

Nobody seems to have more fun on the fretboard than Tim. His "guitar faces" are just pure joy. He clearly served the songs he played on too because that man has dangerous fluidity as a lead player. He always seems so in the moment.

Tim is a treasure! He's so understated - it's easy to see how he became a first call session guy because he's so critical about his talents. He clearly paid his dues and yet he's so humble and down to earth in every interview.

Everyone decides, for, now, and then adapts that decision to improve "time management" as though it were a finite entity. Time is only an accounting of quality effort invested. That's why it seems to expand and contract. The intensity of individual focus, either on production or "refueling" for future "production", varies as needed for overall maintenance. But, all this is only background support for what is "calling" you. What helps us all to continue hearing that call (which may require a change of direction) is the basis on which we assess "quality o life". That assessment cannot be done by others and then appropriated.

Inefficiency is the key to avoiding burnout. So true, which I had learned that sooner. Wisdom arrives after you are too old to fully take advantage of it. Oh well, better late than never.

My employer talked Mr. Winter into playing a Firebird. In one movie he was asked about where he got the Firebird inspiration from and he said what I just said. They asked him again as if he didn't understand the question and he repeated from Ed Seelig in St. Louis.

Tim's take on click-bait is mostly true. Obviously it works or it wouldn't be so prevalent, but so much click-bait has me to the point that if it's obvious click-bait, I won't click. If it's not obvious and misleading, and I have clicked, I will normally "click off." If it's just some sort of inflammatory statement, I may or may not watch, depending on if the content is actually interesting... The one thing that gets my rage though is when a thumbnail says something in the title, but the content doesn't address it at all. Those "creators" get the right-click and "do not recommend channel."

Click bait is when you click one topic and get something different. Tim doesn’t do click bait because you will get a guitar video if you click on a Tim video.
