    In OoT, I once fell asleep playing the game for the umpteenth time while approaching King Dodongo - I woke back up and saw that the heart was waiting for me and he was defeated; I killed him in a mostly-asleep state and don’t remember fighting him. Love that game :P

    Glad you brought up the need for a guide for Majora’s Mask. I don’t like playing with guides, so that game was very challenging for me, and I never figured out the sum total of the famous couple’s side quest. I got through a lot of it, but not all of it. I don’t know how people 100% these games without guides honestly.

    honestly majoras mask is the best zelda game to replay, and I don't even think it's close. The game rewards you so much for memorization due to the 3 day cycle, so when you successfully pull off something like the anju quest through pure memory it feels super good. Also this game has the best atmosphere in any zelda game, bar none.

    I enjoyed the reasoning you had for each list. I did end up enjoying BOTW more than TOTK but that has more to do with my lack of enjoyment for the open world sandbox genre. BOTW felt more fresh for the period I enjoyed it, with TOTK, I think my first thought was “so it’s the same as BOTW but has Minecraft mechanics”. The dungeon themes and bosses were better but had the same issue of just feeling barren of life. Also I wish they didn’t do the fragmented story. Regardless though Nintendo did a fantastic job of what they set out to do. SS: OOT. ALTTP S: WW A: MM ALB B: AOL C: BOTW TP LOZ D: TOTK F: SS

    Phantom Hourglass may be my all-time favourite Zelda game so far. I love it's focus on puzzles and mysteries, I love it's exploration, and I especially love the Ocean King's Temple. Loving the Ocean King's Temple may seem a bit strange to some, but the Temple is really not repetitive. The point of the temple is to basically speedrun it; to make notes detailing strategies to get through it with as much time remaining as possible. Each repeated run you will be faster and each repeated run you can try to further optimise your strategy. If you play like that then after a while you will become very powerful. The Phantoms that at first posed a challenge to overcome will then seem like total buffoons because you have your map detailing a good strategy of how to pass them. And what is best, unlike the sword you later get that can also make the Phantoms a joke by just killing them, the strategy is something you have made instead of something the game just gave you. But if you go through the temple without making strategies for next time, then the temple is very annoying. I think that many people who hate the temple just hate it because they made no use of the map to strategise and the temple is pretty terrible when played that way.

    Nostalgia is definitely a big part. The nature of these lists make it sound like you think less of a game. So like when I say "B tier" it doesn't too great. But if I wasn't putting a letter against it, I'd be saying its excellent, but I have others that are my personal favs. Way less harsh. But also it was my first time playing so yeah... less nostalgia. Flop a link to the past & OOT, and add WW to S tier, and this list is pretty spot on with mine. Glad to see BOT & TOTK not automatically being the top ranked games. Both solid games, but when ranked with other Zelda games, they fall short of being S tier IMO.

  • @Skrulzie
    @Skrulzie10 ай бұрын

    Note about Wind Waker: LoZ is my favorite game franchise. Ever. Knowing that people were legitimately annoyed at WW's art style pissed me off. The fact that the "fans" wanted more realism over a fantasy style game was just baffling to me. Then they made Twilight Princess and those same "fans" critiqued it for being dark and gloomy. I never understood the mindset about that. WW stands as my 2nd favorite Zelda with ALttP being my absolute favorite still.

    Spirit Tracks in F tier......not off to a great start, especially since the thrust of your argument is the microphone; aside from the spirit flute, there is really not all that much use. Moreover, the Spirit tower was a massive step up from the temple of the ocean, & your comment about extra backtracking in it is objectively wrong, as there is some optional BT but otherwise, you move through it in a linear line. You are probably operating on your sense of what the game was, rather than what it actually was. I will watch the rest of the list later. ...now I am really baffled by Spirit Track's placement, knowing that you played Triforce Heroes alone.

    I really don't like Phantom Hourglass after replaying it about a few months ago, but I still love Spirit Tracks. Phantom Hourglass just had a looot of nitpicks from me that just piled onto eachother and made me very reluctant to even finish the game while I was right outside the final boss's area. I didn't really like any of its dungeons, any of its bosses (except like maybe the invisible crab one), I don't really enjoy the ship sailing, and I like actually hate the Ocean King's Temple and how often I had to repeat puzzles in it (especially since I didn't like most of them) are the biggest criticisms I have of it. The only redeeming things about it are Linebeck and the fact you can draw on maps. Tbh, to me it's like the one bad mainline Zelda game.

    So happy to see your respect for the handheld games! I totally agree that the original LA is a better experience than the Switch remake and I think it a big reason is how they abandoned the “tiles” format and let you see into areas you aren’t supposed to, really breaking the illusion of a large world. Wow you really hate any gimmick… I never relate to people’s complaints about the figurines and kinstones in MC, or the same decor of the divine beasts. Also, I don’t understand why you feel obligated to get every heart piece if you don’t care about other collectibles. I also can’t understand why anyone would place ST beneath PH as it basically improved everything from that game - though I must admit I’ve never heard of these mic issues. The only time I really had an issue was the final song. I messaged my friend about 10 minutes into failing to say I was getting pissed off with it. When I finally did it I checked back to see how long it had been - +90 minutes to play 1 song. I wanted to launch the 3DS out of my window. 10/10 frustrating. i originally had the same reaction to the intro sequence of TOTK. I was so excited that there was an actual story. then I got through the tutorial area and went down to hyrule and saw zelda standing on the floating castle and felt it again. but then the rest of the story is told through the memory sequence and 1 cutscene copy and pasted at the end of each dungeon and i was very disappointed. the ending sequence was cool but zelda returning to normal again removed all emotional stakes that were set up

    Yeah, that's another downside of the open world format for Zelda games. For some reason Nintendo felt like because the player could go to any area, they needed to tell that part of the story each time. Not sure why they weren't clever about it and had it so regardless of the order you did things in that it would add something new each time. Guess because it would require more voice acting work? *shrugs*

    The thing I'll disagree is the renting system in lbw. In pretty much every title, the item you get in the dungeon is the one you defeat the final boss. I like the mystery of what you need to beat them. But great list. New sub looking forward to your next video

  • @tildeshambles

    That’s a fair point about not knowing what item to use in the fight. I guess for me I felt the way I felt because I got to see what weapons the game had to offer pretty early and it killed the mystery of how many new weapons the game had when compared to a link to the past. So it’s kind of the same thing. The item rental spoils the items themselves, the dungeon items spoil the strategy when you play enough games. I’m more of a fan of learning of an item one by one. But to each their own. Anyway thanks for watching 😃

The bosses were also made kinda worse because of how obvious the weakpoints were, and this kinda took away what made the original bosses great since none of them had obvious weakspots unlike other zelda games so it felt like an actual fight instead of a puzzle. Noooo, DON'T use a guide for Zelda 1! The whole POINT is to throw you off by giving you something completely unintuitive like having to straight up walk through a wall (it WAS a hallway going nowhere, after all, and STRAIGHT to a black spot on the map, pretty conspicuous!) -- the whole POINT is that it made you have that feeling again of "I genuinely DON'T know what to do." Think about it, when's the last time you've actually felt that way in a game, let alone as an adult in life? Remember what it was like being a kid and being UTTERLY confused? Zelda 1 made you feel that again.

    I have had experiences where I didn’t know where to go next and have been in awe at the world and the exploration plenty in newer games (like hollow knight, Elden ring etc). I don’t think the original developers intended the game to be unintuitive, that aspect came from localisation and limitations at the time. I say use a guide because I want people to experience this game and give it a try and though as much as I want the purist approach I had as a kid for everyone, that’s not going to happen in the age of the internet.

    nice list tho I think ToTK should be even lower lol (imo the amount of recyclement of BoTW is pretty insane, Depths are super bloated, story is mid... and generally it's not nearly as great game in 2023 as BoTW was in 2017)

    The story itself in ToTk isn't groudbreaking, you're right. But at least I found it was more present than BoTW. I can definitely agree my experience in 2017 with BoTW was more mind blowing, but part of that would be because the switch was a new console and that it was the first time Zelda was open world since the original game. But yeah I placed it higher just because of the building systems and the fact that enemy camps don't feel pointless in ToTK. Anyway hope you enjoyed the video :)

    Now that I have finished the list, saying this with all the respect, did not particularly enjoy your reasoning process, & in some instances, you were completely wrong. 1. I get that the spirit flute is a bit arduous, but I also played that game on the 3ds, & made it work, even if not, having that one small aspect monopolize your view of the game is dramatic & silly. Also, as dense as the spirit tower is, there is no greater amount of ACTUAL backtracking present. I would know I played it three times, in fact, I average 3 1/2 playthroughs per game, in the franchise, weird flex I know but assume I am remembering correctly. 2. Playing triforce heroes by yourself is not the intended experience; & so if the game is balanced for cooperative puzzle-solving, why give it any kind of demerit for not being balanced for Single Player....beat em ups are not that fun by yourself either. Regardless your complaint does not stand if they simply removed the single player altogether. 3. Unless I have misunderstood you, you played Majora's Mask completely wrong. The answer to your second complaint is in your first complaint, the arbitrary divide about what carries over & what does not, it is all pretty simple, perishables & chronological events go, and everything else on Link's Person & in his memory stays....particularly songs, & what does one receive before opening a dungeon......a song! This is something that you should have learned at the Wood Temple, how could you not? Once armed with this knowledge, starting on a new cycle, you travel a short distance, probably using one of those owl statues, play the song, & lo & behold, the dungeon, not exactly one of Heracle's labors. That is on you. & unless you are just hopeless at the dungeons, you more than likely have a full day or more to pursue the side tasks. If not...I guess you have to fight the game's super creative boss for two minutes, definitely a better solution than contradicting the larger themes of the game. Also, using a walk-through spoils the great joy of Majora's mask......observation. Last thing, the idea that this game is divisive is basically outdated, as it fights with Lttp & Oot for the top spot among the Zelda audience. 4. In Windwaker, you can sail perpendicular to the wind with little consequence, if changing the wind is THAT painful; sailing the ocean, in an up-down or side-to-side manner will also minimize the amount of wind changing. Outside of a handful of instances, this is a surefire solution, & an easily deduced one at that. Also, it essentially eliminates most of your prolonged scattershot expeditions. 5. Your arbitrary requirement to collect every heart piece is a millstone you tied around your own neck., in regards to Minish Cap, maybe try to preserve the enjoyment of a game by engaging with the enjoyable content that is readily available. 6. Your slavish determination to gather every heart-piece fails to extend to solving traversal in the rain?! Do not mistake me, the rain is lame, but those games have much more massive problems than it, especially TOTK, in that game you have dozens of options to surmount slick services. While many of your placements were agreeable, I did not care for how you came to them; with the crux of most of your criticisms being easily solvable frustrations, rather than any kind of deep dive into fundamental shortcomings, or design failures. Nice video though

I feel like there are some things that it did better than any other Zelda. One of the things about Fi was precisely because she was created with no emotion and yet in the end of the game it was one of the most touching moments of any Zelda game... good list! personally id drop twilight princess down to A: the first half of the game for me has a lot of really good story beats, but kinda lame dungeons, and the second half has the opposite. feels like the story just drops off the face of the earth until the end. then zant...is just taken over by ganondorf. never really liked that, and never really liked the boss fight. to me, twilight princess would have been better if they had stopped trying to emulate ocarina. My favorite is majoras, but i cant disagree on your placement. its pretty damn annoying for a first playthrough. cant really forget my knowledge of the game tho, so that issue is gone. Im also just..NOT a fan of botw. like at all. its got lots of good things, but for me, it feels like a completely different game. dunno if id drop it more than bottom of b tho.

    I can agree with the sentiment on twilights story being better in the first half for sure, pretty all your your points are the reason I opened with “I’m a little worried about placing twilight above ocarina” lol. I’ll see how I feel about majoras in future, but there are definitely parts where I feel majoras was better than ocarina for sure. The thing about knowledge though, for example in Zelda 1 I know that game like the back of my hand but I still gave it a lower rating purely to recognise that my knowledge and nostalgia helped carry what weighs that game down for most. Breath of the wild for sure was a divisive game. I know a few people who didn’t gel with it so it’s not an uncommon opinion to not like it. Anyway thanks for watching and hope you enjoyed! 😁

    I'm going to have to question your claim that Wind Waker and Ocarina of Time Zeldas were the only iterations that "had a personality outside of the typical damsel in distress." I think you're confusing "personality" with "presentation," because many other Zelda games have distinct characterization for their Zeldas, but they're all presented as "Zelda," whereas Sheik and Tetra are presented as their own characters before they are revealed to be Zelda. Spirit Tracks and Skyward Sword have two of the best Zeldas in the series, one a feisty companion character that subverts the dignity and innocence of the previous Zeldas, the other a sweet love interest that Link is forced to watch slowly drift away over the course of the game due to designs beyond either of their control. Sure, the latter qualifies as a damsel, but the former only resembles one, and when you take into consideration the way that Sheik and Tetra's roles change after their big reveals, what kind of distinctions are we trying to make?

  • @tildeshambles

    @tildeshambles

    10 ай бұрын

    Hey, you are correct in saying that all the Zeldas characters have their own personalities. I didn't mean to make it sound like I was saying there was no personality in the other games. When I look at all the iterations of Zelda, Tetra and Sheik stand out simply because of both their visual design, how they act, and for how long they remain with that sort of dynamic as a whole for the duration of the game. Ultimately all Zelda characters have needed rescuing, so I don't really think it's a factor when judging any of them towards the end of the game. We've had this series for such a long time so I really did appreciate when Nintendo subverted both from a visual and personality presentation. The Zelda in Spirit Tracks does subvert the personality expectations for sure, but the visual presentation is still the same and from the get go she's in trouble and needs help right away. It would have been nice if that wasn't the case so early on. Skyward sword on the other hand did explore her character for sure... but I dunno I still saw her as the same princess... just the story being framed as a love story gave her a lot more depth. But that's just my opinion of course. I had high hopes for Zelda in ToTK because they set her up to be a different personality, with a somewhat different visual presentation... but then it fell flat when they used the exact same plot thread as BoTW where she was effectively in a stasis state waiting for Link. Anyway thanks for watching and replying. Hope you enjoyed
