In this video, I get a chance to have Grandmaster Eric Hansen walk me through his thought process when he's evaluating a position and coming up with the right move. You could study little things like how to develop your pieces, how to avoid traps, and how to improve your position to set up for the checkmate for a million years and still never quite fully master the game. I really love chess. Hope you dig the series.

You didn't use Tal Baron's questions during this game. xD

Ben Fucking finegold!!!
That's not balding, that's shedding your winter coat...
Great chess videos, Hutch. Keep it up.
Hutch watching these videos helps me improve so much so thanks dude! It's also so fun to watch you play and get high so thanks for killing boredom pal
I love the awkward sarcastic intros hutch, especially that cooking video you did once, one of your best videos bro
Do a collaboration with GM Magnus Carlsen.

That sounds great and all, but he's really annoying to listen to. He talks very slow, say uhhh all the time and doesn't elaborate on anything. I'd much rather have Tal or Eric because they can speak well and enjoy teaching.

Pretty sure English definitely is Hutch's first language, and I think he was saying "uhh" because he was honestly baffled by how easily he was being man handled.

"too weak, too slow" is referring to a video where Carlsen plays a casual bullet game against Laurent Fressinet (a 2700 player) and trash talks him by saying "too weak, too slow" during the game. XX XX flipped Carlsen's comment around, obviously it's a joke since Carlsen is the highest-rated player in the world and also probably the strongest blitz player so he's hardly slow either.
chess videos are always a mood lifter. Love the vids man!
I haven't played chess in like 3 months but I feel like my game has improved simply by watching these videos. Keep them coming! :)
Hey Hutch, I'm super excited to see that you're playing chess again! I love watching you play, not only for entertainment, but to help my game a little bit, too. You should totally see about playing with John Bartholomew, he's a really great player, and he has a great youtube channel. I hope you can post the the analysis that Eric does with you on your old games, as well.
It looks like you reverted to your old play style as soon as Tal wasn't in your ear. Position wasn't hard at all had you asked yourself Tal's questions...

@IMD918

Pedro Flores this is true, but I think it's just because he got flustered by facing a new grandmaster and being intimidated. Eric purposely played to get abnormal positions so he could beat Hutch just using aggression and tactics. This was an important lesson for Hutch that he can't just expect people to play the lines in an opening, and has to address threats, even if they come in the opening.
Haha, great times. I've enjoyed your videos for years n years. Thanks for all the entertainment!
Good shit. Would've been nice to see him blind folded. Does he have a video up?
I think Hutch would look badass with the shaved head look. I mean, hey, Sark does.

that's pretty crazy! all I can say... my hat is off to both of you men.
You look like your about to spit fire! Then you play chess! Love it !
I had the reaction you talked about when you played Sark in Chess with that massive handicap oh so many years ago.
This past November, I was in San Diego for a neuroscience convention, and one of the evening events (unfortunately I was unable to attend, due to other commitments that evening) was a grandmaster playing several games (I would like to say six, but I'm not entirely sure) while blindfolded and on an exercise machine. Wild stuff. I wish I had been able to go, but my lab decided to do some other stuff out on the town (we're from South Dakota, so it's very rare that we're in a city even remotely as large/scenic as San Diego), and I ended up tagging along.
"But I am missing a beer"
Hutch you are really funny and your intros always make me laugh 😂
this was amazing
Coolest thing I've seen in a long time
11:20 isnt bishop to f1 and then g2 the best moves? attacking the queen and allowing white to run?
just embrace it hutch, shave the head and you will look fine. luv u man, please never stop making vids
loving the series hutch, I think you psyched yourself out a bit too much in this vid you missed some moves that you usually wouldn't, keep it up though I'm learning with you
I always find for about 2-3 games after watching you play with tal i have some kind of flow and then suddenly i end up losing all mojo and playing stupid moves. trying to burn in the thought process to follow but in a game any sense of it goes out the window and I go full idiot just trying to make moves without really thinking what they mean! You'd still smash me but I'm glad to see these things don't stick in the mind of everyone once you get playing solo! loving the chess series mate!
The capacity! the power! the potential!
You and Sark are meant to be #BaldBrothers
Shave your head and migrate all of your hair into a beard. That way it looks like the hair loss is on purpose

it'd be interesting to see what Tal thinks of these games
we should see him :D great vid
Coolest thing I've seen in awhile
Saw this video live on twitch. Really enjoy your content and can still watch here even though I've seen it once. Side note, balding isn't something to be ashamed of. If I had a beard like yours, I actually wouldn't mind shaving my head and doing like a reverse fade into the beard starting at your sideburns.
Love that hat!
if he didn't tell you later, you should have played f3 in that position with the idea of trading queens stop his attack, which what you tend to want to do in positions like that
Evertime the GM disrespects I crack up so hard.
I believe the best move would've been pawn to f3 then black takes knight with queen, white moves queen to g2 black either moves rook to g6 or trades queens. Then white has space to move king and possibly get back into the game
Hello Hutch, would like to analyze this game on my channel, will you allow me to embed some parts of your video in my video analysis???
God damn, I avoided watching these videos for so long because it was fucking chess...what a moron I have been...this is so brilliant, color me completely addicted to Hutch's (somewhat long process :P) rise to Grandmasterdom xD Please keep this series up Hutch :DDD
That is phenomenal. Is how can he do that?
his intros are the best
Something similar with Jan Gustafsson or Finegold would be incredible. I'd love to see that
When you watch Eric play Bullet/Blitz it just makes you want to quit even trying to learn.
You got that Nanners hairline going.
i think hutch could have tried Bc1. it pinned the pawn to prevent the capture and prevented the mate in one threat after f3
He could have just used the blindfold chess theme which just shows empty squares and where the pieces moved from and where it went.
Hutch I remember feeling the same way about the brilliance of the human mind when I walked into my first chess club many years ago. If I wasn't a chess player, I would have no true appreciation for how genius some people are because I wouldn't have anything to gauge it by.
I LUV UR CHESS VIDS DO MOREERERERER :3
Hutchy, remember Tal's questions! Hear him in your ear saying "Is there a threat? What's my worst placed piece?"
"Queen to g2" "Oh for Christ's sake"... sums it up in four words I think...
Can somebody explain to me why bishop f1 wasn't played at the end?

Qh2 mate
incredible mind
love this vid :)
I'm sure Tal is face palming so hard right now.
Lmao when Eric corrects Hutch despite the fact that he's the one blindfolded
As an avid chess player, this is super cool to watch
2nd to last move of the last game. if you move f2 pawn to f3, you could have managed to move the king out of checkmate...
Eric v Tal. Both blindfolded. The ultimate showdown.
Another chess one woot woot
try to do it with john bartholomew he is a chess IM and would be awesome to see u 2 in a video
I have exactly 16 minutes left of cramming time before I have to leave to take a calc test. And then this gets dropped in my sub box. Thanks Hutch.
MORE WITH ERIC HANSEN!!!
jesus he is good
I lost it when he corrected Hutch about bishop to G4 3:03
9:30 up for a pawn.
I'm not a very strong player but I can play a full game blindfold and have never trained to. I think it's easier than you think, give it a go, the majority of even weak players can usually make a good 15-20 moves or so.
do a collaboration with a hairstylist, maybe theres some new combover techniques
Hey Hutch it's alright bro. Just imagine you're a bald eagle.
bishop c1 in last game, woldve gotten messy but i think you couldve gotten out of his trap
@BigMac8000

Look at it closer. Pawn moves in, bishop takes rook, queen mates.
Chessbrah just adopted hutch. Now go do the dishes
I love Hutch, been watching him for so long...he's just a great great guy ! I'm so glad he's still posting videos. For me, he was the reason i was watching KZread. Him, Seananners and Sark. Those years were gold. Keep posting dude, you're amazing. Much love.
i know it was hopeless... but did anyone wnt him to play pawn to F3? and queen to G2?
Wouldn't Bishop to F1 have been a decent move at the end there? Seems to deal with the immediate threat from the queen at least?

Practice yourself. Start with just two moves of a game on your first day. Every day replay the same game from the beginning just add 2 more moves. It will take you 2 weeks or so to finish a game. Eventually you will build up to playing full games. You need to memorize the squares first though like Bg3 and so on. Chess.com has the square trainer thing.

I'm playing chess anyway, so I guess it can't hurt to put in the work, especially considering the benefits to be reaped! Thanks
Chess masters imagine a chess board like we would imagine a 3x3 board. They've played every square thousands of times, it's just sinked into their mind like any talent, not hard to imagine, but impressive. Eric is a monstrous player though, watch his 30 second games.
Ben Finegold next pls
Great intro. That is all
I'm really bad at chess but at the end why not play Bishop to F1 it attacks his queen so he had to move it?

You need some more training with Tal aka Mr. Steal yo Bish
You should make Eric Hansen play Call of Duty :P
At 9:21- 9:36 I bet all my money that his tought was "I could take his kinght with my bish and win a pawn with my queen, but Tal told me to respect more my bish.... Fuck it, I attack that piece with my kinght to, respecting my bish and using my other bish""
if he was blindfolded who moved his pieces on the board?
Yes, Ben Finegold next would be awesome.
I personally would've moved the Bish back. So that he had to either move his Queen up (And you could've taken it at that point) or so he had to move it backwards. So that would've given you plenty of time and options. That's just me though.
@BigMac8000

Wouldn't work. Pawn moves, bishop takes rook, queen mates (same ending).
@PartialNewbity
7 жыл бұрын
BigMac he is talking about the light squared (other guy was talking dark) which still wouldn't have worked because Queen moves up and it's checkmate as the King has nowhere to go. King can't take Queen cause Rook is protecting.
Destroyed lmfao
14:30 all that time spent thinking and he couldn't find Bc1 rip
is is crazy and I love your face. I va been looking at it for a long time :p
Pawn to f3 would have been good :)
How the hell does he do it?
nice hat
at 11:50 he couldve had checkmate on hutch by moving rook to g6
12:40 The position isnt pretty at all from the white side, both of his bishops are horrible, pawn structure is awkward especially bc his pawns lock his bishops in entirely, but doesnt white technically survive if he plays f3 to follow up with Qg2? Yes he gives black's sacrificed knight back and will be down two pawns in a completely lost endgame, but at least he avoids getting mated on the spot (i think) lol
reminds me of that girl in hunter x hunter who played that chess-like game blind
