You would never think, but one of the best Italian restaurants we've ever enjoyed was in Playa Del Coco in a little mall about half a mile north of the main street. We have such wonderful memories of our time there and immediately considered buying a condo. Ticoffia was such a wonderful cafe!!

Wow it really has changed. I spent every summer there in the 70's 80's . My family had owned the last 8 houses towards the very end. Then I heard a marina was coming and the houses would have to go. I love beautiful Costa Rica. So many memories of Playas del Coco walking with the cousin's. They'd call me gringa tica .

Been checking out Coco and Tamarindo. Seems there are a lot more choices to buy condos in the Tamarindo area plus more conveniences like markets and shopping. Can anyone recommend a North American expat realtor to work with? I'm figuring from a legal standpoint that would be the best way to go.

@@pattyriemann5850 We bought in Puerto Vallarta, and found the best way is to grab some real estate booklets where they advertise and look for English speaking agents and make sure they have been selling in that area for at least 5 years so they are not just new agents. You also want one who knows a real estate English speaking lawyer. My theory is if I can’t understand what you are saying, you don’t understand what I want to buy. Good luck

@Robb Skipper nice summary of the situation. do you know any "secret" place where someone can live in peace and is not so much overrated? On the other hand, believe me, almost in every tourist center the same happens, police tries to cover crimes so that they can have good statistics and tourist can feel safe. it can be Greece or Croatia or even Hungary, your description would be valid in each place ... this is the sad reality. Money is god, so .... the state commites all possible to make a great imagen for the tourist region.

@Robb Skipper hello, it was very useful to read your description. in my oppinion Costa Rica is also overrated, but something called my attention: do you really think Sri Lanka could be a nice place to live (even forever)? OK, apart from the problem with women, do you think, is that country less expensive and also safe enough to live there for an European person? It would be really really interesting, but it is very difficoult to get informations about the country. Have you ever been there? thanks, regards

Most of Costa Rica is beautiful and clean, but I found this place too commercial and frankly, I don't know what time of the year this was, but that beach is always crowded, parking is usually filled, and the beach was a bit dirty. Yes, the Pacifo area is pristine and the staff are welcoming. They have a great laundry service as well. The nearby automercado supermarket is delightful--one of my favorites! Also, there is good medical care there, for both people and their pets in town. Restaurants are great and the fresh fruit/vegetable markets are WONDERFUL The weather is great there, too. But in all of CR, it wouldn't be my "go to" beach, but it's a short drive from the airport making it pretty convenient. For a little more time to drive, I prefer the trek to La Cruz..

Yes, it can get hot in Guancaste specially in the Costa Rican summer season which runs from December-May. I think we are lucky in Costa Rica to have many different micro climates within short distances. That way people who don't like the heat can live in the Central Valley and then visit the beach.
