I miss these shows we as children had simple lives we played outside & had fun, none of these hi tec computer games etc those were the carefree days of been a child in the 1970's - 1980's.

My friend worked for a children's publishing company in London 30 years ago. One day, Brian Cant visited to have a meeting about some kids' book. As he walked through the big open plan office, he was chatting informally with the people who were hosting the meeting. My friend told me that one by one, people of a certain age pricked up their ears and starting looking like meercats! Half-standing up, looking to see where that oh-so familiar and comforting voice was coming from. Huge smiles. I absolutely loved Play Away. Treated kids as if they were intelligent, could do and make things, and could think beyond slapstick.

I was too young to remember or understand this programme, as I was just seventeen months old and in the pushchair at the time. My friend Gail (Windy) would have been only six days old then. My Play Away memories were from five years later!

I was 3 months old when this aired I never really watched Play Away I certainly don't remember Derek Griffiths in it but i do remember Brian Cant another tv legend.

I certainly did - born in 1970 and whilst just a toddler in the pushchair when this came out, remember the programme a few years later!

This must be one of the first programmes to have "BBC Colour" on the end credits. Before late 1971 all programmes had "BBC TV" at the end instead

At least in the 70's we did not have comedians joking about the Holocaust and rape. We do now.

@@ysthafellgynghori8423 weird place to take my comment about string but if we're going there... 70's comedians were openly racist sexist, ableist and actually raping people (looking at Rolf and Jimmy etc). I like 70's TV not sure why you made this so dark lol

@@RandomGuy-qh7tl Being born in 1965 and a kid growing up with the freedoms I had in the 70's is something I will take to my grave. The world has gone backwards since but it's great to see you can understand what your dad had and that he passed that on to you

Definately not filmed in November! I don't remember this in 1971. I was seven, maybe it was on during the day when I was at school or maybe I was watching Magpie on ITV instead.

You were seven? I was just a year old at the time (born in June 1970). My Play Away memories started a few years later.

They would have filmed several episodes close together weeks or months before broadcast, not just before. I remember it being on at weekends in the late seventies/eighties, and this broadcast date was a Saturday 🙂

The very first episode of this classic BBC tv series, I think? Anyway, brilliant because Brian Cant, quite simply. I think it's fair to say that schoolchildren _don't_ sing that first skipping rhyme in the playgroung anymore!
