I know what you mean. I just think given the way the OpenAI API works pretty much every AI-based service is going to be a subscription from this point onwards. Can’t think of a single AI powered app that isn’t a monthly/annual sub…

I stumbled across this device a while ago and was intrigued but forgot about it when I saw it wasn’t ready yet but this video just sold it to me. New subscriber and loving your content!

I've had mine for a week now, and as an IT project manager who works with subject matter experts, it has been a godsend. However, there's a significant oversight concerning extracting information from the app to share it via email, especially when providing meeting minutes. Currently, you have to send yourself a cloud link and manually copy the information from the webpage it directs you to. If you try sharing the text file directly, it's cluttered with hashtags and asterisks, which are time-consuming to remove and reformat. I'm looking forward to updates that make it far more user friendly when taking the data from the app.

@@ThatMarkGilroy It would be fantastic if, in the future, there was an option to connect it to a laptop and use a splash screen similar to the app. Don't get me wrong, though-the time spent reformatting the text is minimal compared to the time it would take to write the detailed notes it produces. I would definitely still recommend it, without a doubt.

Additionally, they offer a link to purchase a large add-on package of 6000 minutes, which can be activated with a code. As someone who values ownership and self-hosting, I find it concerning that it's not immediately clear how the membership affects the device, what limitations exist without it, or whether the device functions without it.

Hi Noah. The device functions without it, you can make a recording, plug it in and download the recordings via USB. Although from what I can see the membership ties the device to the GPT plugin via the app in order to access the app-based transcription and summaries. TBH if you’re not going to activate the membership you might as well use the phone memo recording + external solution that I cover in the conclusion. More work but I can see the value in self hosting the data. Oh and you don’t need to turn on the Google cloud hosting- it’s off by default.

Thanks Greg. If you check my community wall I put out an update - there’s a nice software/firmware update that they’ve just rolled out.

How very clever. Thankfully (and I mean this) I rarely have meetings but if I did this would just be sweet. And you have to love that hardware. I was also delighted you mentioned the whole GDPR aspect etc. Sneakily recording people is just not on. When I was doing my Open Uni degree this would have been just epic on tutorials. Not sure it would be that affordable though for a student. But a lovely bit of kit.

Yep, I used to have to do a lot of business with German firms who are probably the most sensitive to deal with in terms of data security. It’s still hard wired into me to look into this whenever I come across a product like this!

I am in uni and I do think it could be very useful, but,as you said, not necessarily very affordable. But since you mentioned the GDPR aspect of it, I wonder how that goes for college lectures and stuff; I mean, during lockdown, most teachers would record classes but there were those who decidedly did not bc they wanted people to be present, so...

@@hcxpl1 Yep. It's an interesting dilemma. I think in uni lectures in particular the mind mapping feature would really come into its own. It also makes me wonder where teachers draw the line in terms of a class full of students typing almost every word they say vs just recording it and having it verbatim to review and revise later. They have to protect their teaching material but similarly its important to adapt to these new technologies.

Yes, subscriptions suck. Even with the year plan, if you exceed the allotted minutes, you have to pay more.

As in you’re both in the same room? It doesn’t connect to a microphone as it is one. If you’re in the same room just pop this on table between you and it’ll pick up all speakers.

Great video. Thank you for this. Would you be able to use it with Bluetooth? Say, can it work with phone call mode if it's using Bluetooth like Airpods? Same for virtual meetings, can it work with Zoom if the Zoom call is on Bluetooth? Or does this only work with speaker mode?

I didn’t explain this brilliantly in the video but the phone mode uses vibration conduction from the phone to read the caller’s words. So when using your phone old school with your device up to your head, it does a brilliant job of hearing the call and separating speakers. In a Zoom/Teams setup I just leave everything on speaker and put the Plaud next to my laptop. The only use case that I can find that this doesn’t work for is if your call/meeting needs to be heard via AirPods or Bluetooth headset. But that might change with a software update (not sure how though).

There are a list of new devices including this and the AI pins where I have a hard time understanding why a smartphone app wouldn’t do the same job better.

The killer feature with this one is the phone recording in the same 'product' as the meeting recording. It works shockingly well. Meanwhile, I think the AI Pin is about to become the biggest flop in tech history - not a fan of 'I told you so' posts but I TOTALLY called it: kzread.info/dash/bejne/aINtptOFiMXfZcY.html

Plaud note: By purchasing the subscription for a year, does that also allow me "paid" access to ChatGPT? Is there a limit in total time paper meeting, eg. 4 hour long meeting?

Hey Danny. No - the subscription doesn't give you access to the Pro version of ChatGPT, just the transcription/summarising features of the app. There was initially a time limit per meeting, but that's recently been unlocked with an upgrade and you can now record up to 5 hours without any breaks in the recording. Pretty impressive.

1. After the first year does one need the ChatGPT paid version or can one use it with my existing free one? 2. How clear is the cellphone recording can you do a demo showing both sides of a conversation for the one on the website isnt clear? 3. If one doesnt want to take Plaud subscription and use ones existing corporate chatGPT account for transcription is that possible after the 1st year? 4. What languages does it support? Does it support the Indian language Hindi and Kannada?

I'll try to help with these. 1) You don't need a ChatGPT account to use this at all. 2) It's very clear - slightly clearer than just using the standard recording mode and you can hear both sides of the conversation in good clarity. 3) You'd have to ask the company this as I don't know what restrictions will be in place after year 1. Right now you can export the transcription and feed it into ChatGPT if you want to generate summaries in that way. 4) Yes to both of those. It supports a total of 57 languages: English, French, Japanese, Korean, German, Spanish, Chinese, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Arabic, Russian, Persian, Cantonese, Greek, Polish, Hindi, Turkish, Swedish, Danish, Finnish, Norwegian, Hungarian, Czech, Hebrew, Slovak, Lithuanian, Latvian, Slovenian, Estonian, Gujarati, Bengali, Ukrainian, Romanian, Tagalog, Vietnamese, Punjabi, Serbian, Macedonian, Croatian, Albanian, Bulgarian, Icelandic, Thai, Malayalam, Tamil, Malay, Swahili, Maori, Welsh, Kannada, Marathi, Nepali, Galician, and Afrikaans.

Yes - you can dial the gain up so the recorder doesn’t need to be right next to the speaker. And there’s a specific summary template for lectures/classes.

But does it have Speaker Identification?

No you don’t have to have it in speaker mode. When you have the recorder in phone mode, it uses vibrations from the phone to record - very covert. ☺️

I’ve used it for exactly this - the summaries aren’t calibrated for show notes but I just put the transcript into ChatGPT and it makes them for me.

Great device. The largest problem i have is that meeting recordings seem to be capped at 1 hour maximum! How do you add the segments together and still use the plaud transcript and AI. Recently had a 2hr 20min meeting and it was broken into three files.

Yes, I’ve just recently started bumping up against this. I ended taking the transcripts of all, throwing them into ChatGPT myself and getting it to summarise using the same format. Bit of a workaround but hopefully the cap will be lifted.

Not yet. That’s why I’ve been sharing direct to Notion to edit/store there. If you share via email/text it creates a temporary weblink to a summary/mindmap/transcript that will allow you to do what you want with it.

What country does Plaud originate from?

The IP owners are called Nicebuild LLC - based in Wyoming from what I can tell. I asked about the data storage too and apparently the google servers that are used are all located in the States. I think many of the team are in Guandong though.

Why don’t just use your phone (or laptop if you’ve got one)?

Yep - I mention this towards the end of the video where I talk about fees and comparisons. You could do that but IMO there is more friction in the process to go from conversation - note that way compared to using this.

I ordered my PLAUD on Jan. 31, 2024. I just received it yesterday, March 25, 2024, almost two months. It was frustrating interfacing with their folks, too. I want to order another one for myself, the first was for my husband, but I am afraid I won't get it until July. Please don't plan on ordering it for a gift, as I did. You might not receive it in time. Oh ...and the package was missing the magnetic ring. Any suggestions on what I can use? Thank you and the video was very informative. Appreciate it .
