Plato's Republic Part 2, Books I & II Justice and the Ring of Gyges

Part 2 picks up the question of what is justice after concluding that Thrasymachus failed to show that a life of injustice is preferable. But Socrates' friend Glaucon worries that justice is only ever chosen for its consequences, not for its own sake. To bolster his claim, he tells the story of the ring of Gyges, which grants the wearer the power of invisibility. (Much like the ring in "Lord of the Rings"!)
