PLATFORM BED - DIY Sprinter Van Conversion Ep.7

In this episode of our DIY Sprinter van conversion series, we build a floating platform bed frame that attaches to the sides of the van using rivnuts. We wanted to do our bed this way to allow for more room underneath the bed, without a bulky frame.
We also explain what rivnuts are, how to use the tool and give a demonstration (starts at 8:43 in the video).
Follow along on our journey while we build out a van, travel the world and Encompass Adventure!!

Parts List for this Project
*Ikea Telescoping Bed Support Beams - www.ikea.com/us/en/p/skorva-c...
---or on Amazon: Telescoping Bed Support Beams: amzn.to/35licwO
*(6) - Ikea Bed Frame Mounting Plates - Ikea Main Part Number = AA-740446-8 (this is the bed it comes on) and the specific part number is 116791 (These do not come with the telescoping supports so we called Ikea and they sent us 7 for free. They take about 2+ weeks to ship/receive, so plan ahead.)
---or on Amazon: Ikea Mounting Plates: amzn.to/2JRrXdW
*(2) - 2” x 6” x 8’ board
*(12) - 5/16-22 Bolts, (12) 5/16 locking washers, (12) wide washers
*(2) 4’ x 8’ - 3/4” Plywood; you can go sanded for a nicer finish, but the hidden nature didn’t seem worth the cost to us
*White Paint - Optional
Tools We Used On This Project:
* Hole Saw Kit: amzn.to/2HpckJI (for cutting holes in the base of the bed to prevent mold)
* Step Bit: amzn.to/35pFEYB

    Hey Ya'll. just wanted to say Thanks again for this super simple bed idea. I bought 3 of the frame rails with brackets ( $60 total ) and used 1/4" plywood across them and a 10" memory foam mattress... My Border Collie Stella and I sleep soooo well on this platform. 2009 Ford e250 Super Duty Van. 2 Lithium batteries and Starlink Dish attached on the back corner. A 3000 watt Renogy Inverter. MaxSpeedingRods diesel heater , 400 watts solar on the roof and 2 roof vents ( 15" x 15" ) with 12v fans. 27" Smart Tv and 2 - Wyze 360 Cams on the front and rear roof areas. a 12v fridge/freezer combo and single induction stovetop. This is a dreamy Nomad Van and in total I have spent $5500 Cdn dollars to be able to live OFF GRID up to 5 days at a time and run EVERYTHING without issue. My last trip into far north I spent 11 days off grid and used my Honda 2000watt generator to re charge my batteries and power stations ,,, and had the BEST trip ever. it ALL started with the IKEA bed rail plan , so 🙏 Thank You for the idea Capt Vantastic - and Stella

    @@EncompassAdventure I'll make a video for you guys. As far as the Starlink , it's amazing ... I bought their Pivot Mount base and attached it to the back corner. It uses very little power too,, at First just using a Jackery 300 watt power station it would run the Starlink for 12+ hours. Then adding the 2 - 180amp hour Lithium Batteries and solar panels on roof , It keeps me going for 2-3 days totally off grid ! I learned most of my renewable energy skills from Will Prowse KZread channel , he's brilliant ! I have a 30' Sailboat ⛵️ as well that is my summer home. Now with my Land Yacht , i'm set to live free year round and rarely am at home .....

    Greetings! Thanks so much for your videos. With two tiny kiddos, the research and planning process for a Sprinter build is extra overwhelming, and we've gained so much clarity and confidence from your videos, along with finally finding THE bed design for us! I just had a couple of questions on your bed build - which size riv nuts did you end up using for the 2x6 attachment to the wall? And after some time with the bed in place, how's your build holding up? Would you go back and do anything differently? Thanks again!

    On a step drill bit, use a black indelible marker to mark the drill width JUST AFTER the width you want to stop at, that way just drill until the "painted" ring touches the metal, push more lightly as you get to the final ring to drill through... For large structural items, use PLUSNUTS over RIVNUTS as they put more MEAT behind the sheet metal for a stronger hold. TIP for "finding" rivnuts behind a panel you want to put up: grind the head off a few bolts sized for the rivnut, and make a point on the end. Now just thread in those to have the point stick up just a bit, and position your panel, then PUSH it into the rivnut to mark it and take down and drill from the back using those marks! The only issue here is that with the stock SKORVA mounts, you can't have the mattress extend into the wall cavity for tall people to sleep transverse since the bracket mounts ABOVE where the SKORVA attaches... To get around that, just buy some bar stock STEEL to use instead of the SKORVA stock mounts, and cut it long enough to allow room for the SKORVA to slide down in, and for a bolt on either side to hold it to the wall. Just put a washer BEHIND the bar at each hole, and this will create the gap you need for the SKORVA to slide down into it for support. This makes the SKORVA attach at the TOP of this bracket, and leaves you free and clear to extend your mattress into the wall cavity for maximum transverse sleeping length. In that case, I suggest Home Depot DUCT INSULATION against the outer walls, it has a sticky back, foil front, and comes in 15' rolls for around $22 and is R3 insulation value. Then skin over this with 1/4" plywood to lose only about 1/2" of van width... In my new build I'm just starting, I'll be doing the first "shower in a drawer"...

    Those Ikia beam supports must be the best thing since sliced bread for the camper converter , simple fab idea amazed you found them, Im UK based & checked the online AKIA and yes we can get them in the uk Phew ! . Just a few idea s from myself , the bed plywood base i would cut a centre line joint not offset which would equal maybe less movement between you rather than underneath one of you (pinched mattress covering ) and lastly im a big boy not in the Victori Secrets weight range & i notice your hubby is kind of hunky sized , So im questioning are three beams enough because if that bed drops its dog burgers for dinner that night Lol ! for the price of 4 x beams $$$ Stronger even more mount the side clips with washers nuts and bolts on the 6 x 2 wood before mounting on the van sides / not just screws . For other builders purchase double the amount of side metal clips with one set mounted lower for when just going on local trips when all the gear is not required under the bed , so for the price of 8 x extra clips you will have a dual position bed . Happy following you guys keep up the good work.

    Yes, since sliced bread! 😆 We have links to all of the products in the description of our video for Ikea or Amazon but they're cheaper at Ikea. Glad you're able to get them there! Just make sure you ask for the mounting plates too and they should give those to you for free. The actual Ikea house beds come with 3 beams so we figured it would be enough but you could definitely add another if you want the extra support! We've have both of us and both of our dogs on our bed and haven't had any problems (one of our dogs is a 160 pound Great Dane). We put at least one bolt and locking washers in each of the mounting plates, along with screws but you could probably do what you said going all the way through the wood with bolts and nuts, depending on where the 2x6 is mounted on the van. Also, your idea of making it extra versatile and using extra mounting plates to adjust the bed for a quick trip is pretty cool! Very creative! Thank you so much for watching and happy building! 😊

    Hi there! Thanks for watching! We haven't had any problems as of yet. We're still building out our van but have taken it camping multiple times. There are little holes in the tops of the beams that we utilized with a bolt and wing nut to secure the platform wood to the beam to keep the wood from sliding, when stopping. Otherwise, the weight of the wood and mattress keep the beams down. If you wanted an additional security measure you could screw in some L brackets underneath the bed, from the wood platform (that the mattress sits on) to the wood on the wall/wall of the van. Hope this helps! Happy Building! :)

    Might be real late to the party on this one but you could get some wood shims and slide them into the mounting bracket where the support beam hooks on. This would ensure a very snug fit so there would be no rattling.

  • @EncompassAdventure

    @EncompassAdventure

    3 жыл бұрын

    There are many sizes of rivnuts for different needs. The pack we got came with multiple sizes (big and small). Just make sure you're putting them in something that is secure enough to hold your load. As for the mounting plates, that the beams secure into, we screwed those into the wood that was being held up by rivnuts. We didn't put rivnuts directly into the mounting plates. I'd test it first and if it works and you're happy with it, go for it. Hopefully, that helps! Happy Building! 😊

    @pete's b-roll Thank you! I'm so glad you love it. 😊 We attached it to the wood, instead of the van walls because we raised our bed higher than the metal support beam that goes horizontally down the middle of the van. If we had attached the skorva beams, to the van walls, at this height, some of them would only have been attached to the 1 metal sheet of the van wall and the rivets would have gone through to the outside and that didn't seem as secure or efficient. We also did the bed before we put any insulation in or the shiplap and instead built those things around the 2x6's. I supposed you could insulate and do your walls, before the bed and secure it that way if you choose to. This way just worked out better for us. Hope this helps and happy building! 😊

    Hi there! The handful of times we've driven with the bed up, we haven't noticed any noise coming from the Ikea supports. We think the weight of the wood and mattress on top, help with that too. Once we're done with the build, we're going to attach the Ikea support beams to the wooden platform, with screws and wing nuts to prevent sliding. We can definitely do an update video once we're done with our van build and have driven around more but so far, they've worked perfectly. Hope this helps and thank you so much for watching!

    Hi there! We used 5/16 rivnuts and 5/16-22 bolts. For the step bit, I think we drilled up to the 1/2 inch measurement shown on the bit itself. I think different brands of rivnuts can require different sized holes. There are charts that show what size hole you should make depending on the size of rivnuts you use, we would suggest referencing those beforehand too. Hope this helps! :)

    Nice video, however I went to Ikea and purchased these beams after seeing the video and asked for the mounting brackets only to be told the hardward comes with a bed purchase or check spare parts which was the never ending return line, no thanks I'll stick to plywood. I had to order the beams out of state and had my daughter pick them and no brackets after all these hoops, a little frustrating, now I'm gonna return them whenever she feels like going back in the store to return them, this would've been such an easier bed build

    Hi spacegreycoralred, yes exactly what misha frog said. Plus, we ended up building a bedside storage box on the side of our bed using the plywood as as the bottom of it. The metal beams aren't spaced for the wooden slats and it would be difficult to secure the wooden slats without drilling a lot of holes into the metal beams. We actually have an Ikea bed in our house with the mwtal beams and wooden slats and have nothing but issues with the slats sliding around. Plywood is much more solid and secure. Not saying you couldn't make slats work for you, it just wasn't what we preferred Hope this helps!
