The help for desert sand also. ;-)
The factory carpeted liners hold all the mud. What were they thinking? The smooth liners release the mud. I had a 2015 Silverado with the flat running boards. They looked awesome. But it was just a shelf for all the mud & debris to collect. Sometimes pretty isn't functional.

Do you think these could trap any moisture and salt against the rest of the body and cause issues?

It’s very possible but I think they will keep more out than what they trap in. From my experience once the salt gets it it’s very difficult to get out. My personal opinion is that it’s best to keep as much out as possible and take advantage of the underside wash when I go through the car wash.
