Plasma TV 42" for $8999 at Harvey Norman!

Ғылым және технология

Retro Harvey Norman ad from 2002, advertising a 42", 480p plasma with analog TV tuner, for the bargain price of $8999! Today, a screen like this is worth so little you might as well put it on the front lawn and hope someone takes it away.

Back in 2002, plasmas came in 2 sizes: 32" and 42". In Australia, a 32" cost around $7,000 while a 42" was around $10,000. CRTs made much more sense. For a 34" widescreen HD CRT, you were looking at around $5,000. CRTs could display up to 720p, while plasmas were limited to just 480p. Of course, with both sets, you needed to buy a set top box if you wanted to watch digital TV. These boxes cost $500 for SD and $700 for HD.

I wonder why they stopped advertising TV screen sizes in centimetres when the flat screens came in.

Obvious reasons - the numbers got too big. When you start getting over 100 people have trouble visualizing size. People can picture a 51cm or 68cm TV, but start getting to 140 and 150cm and it confuses them. Inches keep the numbers low :)

+Dominic Abela 12 years later and you'll be regretting paying that price for a measly 55inch display

new 4k led smart TVs cost 1200usd, the people who bought flat plasmas in the early 2000s were fooled because in 2006 fullhd lcds were sold for nearly 1000usd

+santiago cianca No, in 2006, full HD LCDs were more like $5000. Plasmas were a lot cheaper than LCDs in 2006. Back then, plasmas were around $2500 for a 42" (720p). LCDs were up to double the price, and full 1080p HD was not common at all. Most sets back then were either SD or "standard HD" (720p). Full HD LCDs only came down to the $1000 price range within the last 5 years.
