This is THE song ❤ I saw them play in a small school hall in 1973 when I was 14, they came to Inis Oirr, smallest of the Aran Islands, birthplace of my Mother. I'm 62 now, I will never ever forget that night, it was magical.

I studied with some Irish guys in London in 1979, or thereabouts. They were training to be priests. They introduced me to Ireland, Planxty and Guinness. I worked in Belfast for a couple of months at the end of that year and went down to a music festival in the South where Planxty were playing. What a memory, what a time . I,m now in New Zealand and look back to those days with some sadness.

Sorrow and sadness, bitterness, grief Memories I have of you Won't leave me in peace My mind was running back To the west coast of Clare Thinking of you And the times we had there I walked to Spanish Point I knew I'd find you there I stood on the white strand You were everywhere Vivid memories fade But the mood still remains I wish I could go back And be with you again In Milltown there's a pub It's there that I sat down I see you everywhere Your face is all around The search for times past Contains such sweet pain I'll banish lonesome thoughts But they'll return again I walk along the shore The rain in my face My mind is numb with grief Of you there is no trace I'll think of this again In far off lands I roam Walking with you Sorrow and sadness, bitterness, grief Memories I have of you Won't leave me in peace My mind was running back To the west coast of Clare Thinking of you And the times we had there

Listening to this in Brisbane Australia, had a ticket to go back in 2020. It’s 2022 and hope to get to get back to Clare in 2023. Last time there I was sitting on the steps in the square watching a spinning wheel turn. That was in 1977, the year before I emigrated. I’d like to play in a session in Ennis again, I’ll have a tin whistle (but my fiddle will be left in Brisbane). Something to look forward to.

This makes me think of my father, after my mother died. He went through grief and remorse partly because he knew he didn't always treat my mother well. And now he knows he's all alone. When my mother died, I saw her face everywhere and I went through tremendous grief and remorse. I didn't love her enough when she was still alive.

Your mother is watching over you and she loves you and she knows every hair on your head. Couple of years after my mother-in-law died I was living in her apartment sitting on the sofa and I had two or three kids and they were in the room in the back it was evening and I had the kids and got married to her son after she passed away all of a sudden I smelled for a split-second her perfume so I never forgot that she came to looking on us and to give me the knowledge that we don't die she let me know she was watching over me and her son and our children in her home. That was the greatest gift I ever got from anyone in my life was proof of Life after we die

Before it was a helpless reminder of unrequited love lost, but I didn't get it then. Now, many decades later, the pain is a small price to pay, it allows for re-living a time together with a dearly departed. Vivid memories fade, but the mood still remains.

These guys and this line up kept me dreaming through some very dark times in.this my.countrys sojourn. Between.T.Lizzy, Moving Hearts, Plantxy, Scullion, and my Ma beating the rosary into my heathen soul I emigrated to be the "brave new world" of America....aaay. The constant during those wilderness years was my dream iof.that western seaboard croft and a few creamy.pints now and again. Ireland has moved in a direction that neither my grandfathers nor I could ever have envisioned.

I know I am going to be accused of "heresy" here and whilst I have 4 different recordings of the song by Andy as I love it so much, I still say the best ever version is by Geraldine MacGowan with Chris Jones on guitar (RIP Chris), which is just absolute perfection. Andy is such a musical treasure who is one of my favorites. His love of Woody Guthrie, Irish traditional and Eastern European music has created a one of a kind musician. His mastery of the Irish Bouzouki and mandolin along with such a gifted voice has been our good fortune. From Sweeney’s Men,Planxty,Patrick Street, Mozaik and solo albums he has given us a rich body of music to enjoy. Songs of the road, social issues, love and historical themes his body of work is our good fortune to listen to and enjoy. I have many musical heroes but Andy is a standout. Planxty with the likes of Andy, Christy Moore, Donal Lunny and the late Liam O’Flynn gave us some of Ireland’s finest performers still to this day.

Andy Irvine and Donal Lunny (Andy in particular) are, imo, the most important people in the evolution, revival and retention of interest in trad music in Ireland beginning in the late 60s & early 70s. Musicians who have followed since, and indeed us, the listeners, owe them a huge gratitude for the preservation of one of the most important parts of our culture, our music. Go raibh maith agaibh.

dad died in 2004,him and mum used to take us on hols to all the places andy mentions in the song in clare, you think he wrote it in memory, the year it came out, beautiful song, and its good to cry at any age.
Beautiful sound I love that tune so much brings right back to the glory days of folk in the seventies. I feel so lucky to have such great memories of the time. Each one of them were brilliant. RIP Liam O Flynn.
Beautiful , I could never get tired of that song and Andy’s wonderful voice , it seeps into your soul !❤

I am German and love Irish music since 45 years. This song melts all stress away from me every time I listen to it. Beautiful and sad at the same time.
One of the most beautiful songs ever written. Thank you.
Seeing the tears roll down Christy's face as I was already in floods did me in. What a piece.

That was the greatest gift I ever got from anyone in my life was proof of Life after we die
planxty are so timeless brings me back to my youth. class act real Irish music. Makes you so proud to be Irish from a land full of beautiful music .
all celtic souls like this song.
Andy is one of the few BARDS!! No words can describe his emotion's, the way he does the song, and the spirituality and Irish deep, deep, love of our country and the ancient songs and stories. I was lucky to see Planxty in the point. I was very happy to see David Bowie live too! Enjoy this beautiful music and the beautiful Andy Irvine. xxx
one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. I never get tired to hear it.
This is the stuff they play in Heaven.
Before it was a helpless reminder of unrequited love lost, but I didn't get it then. Now, many decades later, the pain is a small price to pay, it allows for re-living a time together with a dearly departed. Vivid memories fade, but the mood still remains.
When I hear Andy, I ll always be young :)
I was only about 6 r 7 yrs old when I first heard this. I am now 57 yrs. Living in Nigeria. But there's not a night will pass that I do not listen to this music. Well done planxty ye r all legends.
Surely one of the most beautiful songs ever. And written by a man who isthemost brilliant musician as well. What a man . I remember playing thison my tinwhistle on arock in west clare with the wind howling x the waves lashing . Over 60 years ago

More than magic - infinitesimal beauty. My wife, her Mum and Dad and I spent a short time at Spanish Point in 1978 - Unbelievable. I can feel it now 42 years later . Time has no presence when beauty prevails forever. Love and forgiveness
I hold this band and especially Andy in very high esteem.

+KierOg Absolutely agree 100%. Every time I hear this song, something inside me twists knife-like, then aches with a profound feeling of loss - no matter what my life circumstances might be. I first heard it in the 70's and since that fateful day I must have listened to it hundreds of times.... and it has the same effect on me today as it did all those lost years ago. Your comment, KierOg, seems pretty much the definitive one .

Andy haunting and beautiful
Thankfully I managed to see Andy just before lockdown last year and he's still doing great stuff. I know I am going to be accused of "heresy" here and whilst I have 4 different recordings of the song by Andy as I love it so much, I still say the best ever version is by Geraldine MacGowan with Chris Jones on guitar (RIP Chris), which is just absolute perfection. Can't wait to be back in Clare for the live sessions again this year after all this pandemic madness. RIP Liam and thank you so much for giving all so much joy over so many years. We miss you man.

Planxty with the likes of Andy, Christy Moore, Donal Lunny and the late Liam O’Flynn gave us some of Ireland’s finest performers still to this day.
brings me to tears each time I hear it. memories of Kilkee and Kilrush...
beyond beautiful ! Timeless!

hireath ~ longing for that which is lost, yet yearning in the heart with hope for an answer to weeping
This still stings my heart whenever I hear it.It"s exactly how I felt when I lost the first love of my life. She was from California and she surely broke my heart.
