Planting Sunflowers for the 2024 Dove Field

The Clearfield Sunflowers are going in. My estimate is that I planted approximately 670 seeds per row and with 33 rows that comes to over 22K seeds put in the ground. That works out to about 3 pounds of seed. The actual planted area is just over 3/4 of an acre. I broke this into 3 sections approximately 28 feet wide by 390 feet long - 11K square feet per section. Each section has eleven rows 30 inches apart and each row should have about 680 seeds in it. If I have only 25% survival overall, that still will give me 5,500 plants to produce seeds. I'm hoping for at least 75% survival for closer to 16,500 plants. After planting I sprayed the planted areas with a mix of three pre-emergent herbicides to help keep the area clear of weeds and grasses. Looking good Cervus! I pray you get just the right amount of rain over the next few months. Good luck with getting that fence up. Those deer are relentless.

Thanks 👍 I just bought a dozen T fence posts. I'm planning on building what is called a 3-D deer fence. There are quite a few videos on it on YT. More money being dumped into this project for sure. I sure hope these plants grow. We got a 1/4 inch of rain over the weekend and they are calling for rain this tomorrow and Friday morning. Maybe that will help.

Hey Cervus I have been seeing a lot of dove around me in the last week so might be a good year. One year they planted sunflowers up by me that was one of the best dove hunts around here.

Sounds great! They say that sunflowers are the best. I know the guy that plants them across from me shoots all the time. I sure hope these plants come up and produce.

They about as straight as I could get them. Some are a little wavy, but it's work for a dove field

@@cervus-venatorI don't remember all this new fangled stuff on my Father-in-laws 8N Ford lol. No stereo, air conditioning/heater , GPS or air ride seat. Turn signal was your arm. I do miss it though.

Are you planting the normal sized or the giant sunflowers ?

They'll have heads 4 to 8 inches across depending on how they do. Needless to say I'm a little nervous about it.
I googled how many seess grow in 1 sunflower = 1-2000 seeds per plant so if they all do well the doves will be flyin a little slower leaving the field ! Lol

If I get just 1,000 seed from 20 thousand plants that will be 20 million seeds. That will work. Even if I only get 500 seeds from 10 thousand plants that is still 5 million seeds for the dove.

It came up to about 21 to 22 thousand seed (about 7,500 seed in a pound) so I put out about 3 pounds. At least that is what I'm thinking. I'll know more if they actually start germinating.
Now you need is rain 💦💦

Yes, this planting took place on Wednesday 5/1 and we got a 1/4 inch of rain over the weekend (5/4 and 5/5) They are calling for rain tomorrow and Friday morning (5/9 and 5/10). Maybe that will help.
