Planting Rhododendrons and Peonies in Containers

Planting Rhododendrons and Peonies in Containers - In this video I plant three Southgate® Rhododendrons in one container. I will plant these into the ground after they finish blooming this spring. I also plant three Peonies into a container as well. I will also enjoy those flowers on the porch and then plant them into the landscape later.

This is so great. I planted a peony two years ago and it never has done well. I have horrible rocky clay soil here in Georgia. I just thought about digging it up and potting it. Great to know that was a good idea!

This weekend it's going to be so nice here in Virginia. I will be working on my raised vegetable garden. We just moved in a brand new house and I have no landscaping. It's kind of sad and a bit overwhelming. I left years and years of plants behind at my old house 😑 but I have been watching so many KZread videos to help get me inspired. thanks for your video 😉

I couldn’t agree more. In a new home in Va as well and planning our new landscaping. Had plenty of 20+ yr old plant material to appreciate at our last house, so looking forward to a new canvas. Thanks for the no nonsense approach in your videos Jim.

Hey great stuff....Quick question...I am about to transplant 2 Camellias ( I think Japanese) to the side of my house to get them out of the sun. They are 1 or 2 seasons old. How far from or should I plant them near my foundation on the side of my house? Thanks again!

They aren't aggressive rooting plants really. I had a big yuletide camellia only three feet from my house that I transplanted in a video last year.

Hi, Jim, I picked up a bag of peony tubers at a wholesale club last week to try starting them off in containers, as you suggested. Usually the peonies I've purchased have about 5-6 eyes, but these were so inexpensive that I wasn't surprised to find they are smaller. There were 4 tubers in the bag.-Two each of 2 varieties. The tubers are small--about 2 or 3 eyes each, so I thought I'd plant two of the same variety in one pot and the other two in another pot. Is there any reason why each must go in its own container? I planned to grow them all summer and just surround them with some small annuals that enjoy sun. I'll be able to keep my eye on them and feed and water regularly to keep the pot looking pretty all season. Long term, I will likely plant these out into garden beds this autumn. Thanks in advance for any advice!

You know what? I have *never thought of planting peonies in a container. But now that you have shown me the light, I plan to pick up some of those inexpensive ones at the box store and giving them a try. I hope for blooms. Then I will have to figure out if I can store them in the containers over the winter or not because I have no more space for peonies in the landscape.
