Planting Potatoes in June for a Late Fall 2nd Harvest

We are growing potatoes, but we are also planting 2 successtions of potatoes to ensure a late harvest as well as an early harvest. This gives us more food security and ensures a more prolonged harvest. Check out our new clothing line! http:www.freshpickedapparel.com

Currently letting some store bought potatoes grow in a dark cabinet because there were no seed potatoes anywhere. I did find out the organic ones work best for this due to the fact they aren't sprayed with inhibitors.

The store bought ones are sprayed with a sprout inhibitor called sprout nip. So if you want to sprout them try adding warmth and humidity and keep it dark.

I think if you take a little dirt from your garden and rub it all over 1 potato from the store and had a 2nd as a control that you didnt rub dirt on, you would find that the dirty tater would sprout faster.

That's what I do. In my country the variety of the potato is listed on the back of the bag so I can even find the specific kinds I want. I can also have a bigger selection in my garden because I can buy smaller quantities. Now I have some left over from the previous year that starts sprouting in spring so I use them and only buy new ones if I want to try a new variety.

When you harvest in the fall, just put the largest potato from each plant back in the ground. Next spring you will have a new potato plant come up so you only have to dig the bed once. Less disturbance to the soil. And you don’t have to pay for seed potatoes ever again.

I grow beautiful potatos just from potato eyes. I carefully remove them with a bit of potato all around them, but not too much. Place them on plate upside down to dry just a little bit, forming a film. Then I plant them in large pots and ad 3 to almost 4 inches of good garden soil, or manure, or whatever I have. Now 7 to 10 weeks later, gorgeous healthy plants emerged, and I have them growing beautifully in several pots. So we have our plants, and we still ate the potatos these came from.

Hill or earthing up is kind of old fashioned. It means you plant them shallow so don't have much trouble digging them up.I plant in containers now, very deep and also bury containers in ground.Nothing more to do until harvest. Then just pull whole container up and tip contents in barrow and search for potatoes. Put spent soil/compost in hole and plant garlic. Minimum 5kg or 12 lbs per bucket. Iv'e had 15kg from one. Almost a bit too easy. :)

My gardening this year iscomplicated by needing to dig up most of what I planted in March, April, May and early this monthbecause the maple tree that I planted everything underneath has to come down! I'm digging new beds in an area of my yard that I haven't dug in before. I find lots of interesting things when digging in my yard. I have concluded that the previous owners thought glass was a soil amendment! Beyond mundane things like glass, nails, tin cans, bits of pottery, and miscellaneous plastic things, I have found half a car battery, bullets, and yesterday, a half round hollow metal object filled with dirt. Always exciting!

I will be planted potatoes this weekend. I have both seed potatoes and sprouted ones from the produce aisle that I sorted when some grew eyes. Those are the ones I planted. The ones which didn't grow eyes I left in a bowl on the counter. Those didn't sprout but the ones in the ground are growing at the same rate as their seed cousins. All are about 3 ft tall right now! And pretty flowers on both types!

I'm only growing red pontiac. My first batch was planted mid-April and my second was planted the end of May. I have battled potato beetles for the last 2 weeks now. I'm just picking them off by hand and crushing them. I'm also checking for eggs and found one leaf with eggs. I didn't find any potato beetles today but it has been really hot today and yesterday. I don't know if the heat deters them or not. This is my first time growing potatoes. I grew the first batch in raised beds and the second in cardboard boxes. Thank you for your channel. You explain everything well. Keep smiling!

I live in southern California. I have a few different patches of potatoes. 3 5-gal containers, and 3 small areas. I find myself needing some potatoes, I harvest a bucket or a patch, re-plant with sprouted taters and in a week or so, I harvest another spot and re-plant. And, I just let one of two potatoes sprout, I've never bought extra seep potatoes.

I live in S.C. so we just harvested our potatoes. I was able to buy 3 bags right before everything went south. We dug up right round 700 potatoes. This was my first year planting russets and was very pleased with the harvest; considering there were not that many potatoes in the bag. I will not be planting a 2nd crop but just like you said, I went back and planted some squash, peppers, and 2 watermelons plants in their place. It's such a blessing to have a long growing season.

if you have a good harvest, know that food never needs to go to waste. can it. it's easy. all you need are some jars with rubber seals in the lid - a big pot and boiling water. prepare the item the way you like it - stick it in the jar - seal w/lid - place jars in large pot cover and boil. it will keep for about a year - 'til the next harvest!

We have more problems with typhoons than cold weather. I am looking for indeterminate tomatoes that work decently in hot, humid weather. I do use the suckers to grow new plants. Potatoes are cheap but they have not done well for us. Conversely, sweet potatoes have done very well for us in The Philippines. I will try your ideas one more time. I really respect your energy and youth. Thank you for sharing. God bless America.

Hi Luke, I am one of those flower/fruit gardeners who added raised veggie beds this year. A friend of mine turned me on to your channel. So far you have helped with my tomato pruning and now my potatoes. I am anxious for you to show when to harvest potatoes. I also have lettuce, kale, cucumbers, carrots, bush beans, and zucchini. I started green onions and celery from produce trimmings in my kitchen window then transfered them to the raised beds. I'm really enjoying this. Can't wait for a crop. Thank you for your great instructions.
