Haha, they can keep those microchips. I'll tell you what though, this thing is going to need a pass through Papa Tony's Workshop one of these years. The bearings on the wheels and the discs are worn so loose it's almost comical. There aren't too many major potato growers around here but the farm I got this from really put it through the paces. It's seen more work than I could ever give it. But by golly it keeps on functioning. Means a lot that you keep sticking around to watch our videos. We're grateful!

You've got it right. The new growth and the learning. That's what keeps it fun. We've gardened here for so long now it's a little scary to think how long. Having the experience really helps in a lot of ways but also sometimes you get stuck in your own rut after years and years and years. Sometimes I watch my own videos and wonder what the heck I was thinking the way I did something. I wish you amazing luck this year. We'll keep each other posted.

It's fun to see the old equipment being used. You can almost feel the presence of all the people who used it and the life they lead. Such history. I have 7 potato plants this year. Silly compared to your plot, but food is food and experience, knowledge on a small amount can be huge.

I'm above ground. My son is pretty busy. We've got some videos but not editing right now. I hope you're well. I'd sure like to hear how your garden came out.

When I was a kid we planted potatoes with two other families on about an acre of ground. Dad, I and one of the other men went up to the potato farm and got 300 pounds of certified seed potatoes. We had potatoes that lasted for over a year. We always cut the potatoes and planted the by hand.

Thank you I sure have fun with them. I've always loved these old tractors, and back in the early 1980s farmers didn't want them. Back then it was like I was like doing a tractor rescue. Thanks for watching and thanks for your channel I've enjoyed it!

You bet. We've been doing that for years. Some folks use a plastic bucket with the bottom sawed off too. I've been told the metallic cans keep the birds off. Of course our cans are so brown at this point that wouldn't mean a thing. We keep using them, it works ok. Our good friend who sold us the Ferguson worked at an elementary school and he saved plenty of the big cans for us, so that was very nice of him. They're out there to be salvaged and used. Hope the idea helps you!

@@OzziesOddities It absolutely will. My grandparents raised me on a large vegetable farm. He was a market gardener. I hadn’t thought of that, and when I saw yours it brought fond memories back. Very kind of you to say. Neat you had that experience with your grandparents. My mother's brother had an orchard and nursery when I was young. My mother was a real active gardener, vegetables and flowers. I sure loved the crop and livestock farming too, but the vegetable gardening tradition is so important and enjoyable to keep on going. We really are happy. Good for you for keeping on with the gardening and thanks for your support!

I love your garden lessons , and the fact that you use old equipment . None of the video's i watch use Minneapolis Moline tractors , I know nothing about them. I grew up on a dairy farm. We use farmall the neighbors further north down our road used , one used Massey Harris the other john deere 2 cyl . go the other way down our road south first neighbor used ford. next guy used Allis Chalmers . Not sure what other dairy farmers used further away. Probably a repeat of the same brands of tractors. But no one had minneapolis. I wish I had a potato digger and planter. I seen a fancy potato digger sell for 750 at an auction . an old machine /And I never seen one like it again. It looked like a fun one to use. and looked as big as the planter looking forward to see how you make sourkraut I tried it once and threw it all away

Wow that sounds like a great neighborhood of tractors. I'm sure there are more Molines and Olivers in our part of the country, but I do think they were sold all over pretty much. I guess I'm not sure on that. I think it might cost that much to get those old potato diggers with the chain belt off the back now days, especially in good working order. I'd really like to try one of those, this one doesn't clean the potatoes off too well unless the soil is really good and dry. I love this planter we have. I love the way the mechanics work, it's so much fun. But goodness is it ever worn. I spose it'll outlast me though anyhow. We'll keep you updated on sauerkraut! Thanks very much for watching. You should put some mulch down to prevent your soil from cracking and drying out. Water won't be able to penetrate if your soil forms a hard crust on top. I suggest just cutting your grass and throwing that on top of the soil. Looks like you have more than enough grass to cut and cover your crops with.

That's not a bad idea. I know folks are doing a lot less tilling and a lot more mulching now days and I can see where that might be better. Maybe I'm a little stuck in my ways.

I plant by the sign. I planted 28 maters 3 weeks ago, along with a doz cabbage, 1/2 doz egg plants, lettuce, 2 pks, 40ft long 3 rows of beans and 3 of peas, and 5 rows around 40ft long of S corn. We got 5in rain in 2 weeks straight, and I lost all the maters peas, and beans, and lettuce, and around 1/2 of everything else. I bought all the mater plants my grocery store had in my tiny town of Chelsea Okla, which totaled over 40. They were dry dry dry. Dead leaves all over them, but I got them for 6.00. Today I roached them of the dead stuff, and they look fairly tolerable. Signs right today and tomorrow to plant above ground stuff, and ive got 4 cabbage plants Ill plant also. I go by Lewelleyns Moon Sign Book. If you care to remember, ( The best tasting sauerkraut is made just after a full moon, in the fruitful signs of Cancer Scorpoio and Pices) I missed the last sign to make kruaut, and the next isnt till Sept. Ive got a 3 gal crock, an d a kruaut cutter. I like good kruaut also. Its the kruaut in me I guess lol

Wow sorry to hear the rain washed you out. Glad you were able to pick up the last of the tomato plants and clean them up and revive them. I hope they work out for you. I guess I don't know too much about the astronomy or astrology or whichever that book is. My dad was into that sort of thing. I should have paid closer attention. He had a telescope and knew all his constellations and what different astrology meant. Gotta love the homemade kraut. Just nothing like it. I like it in the roasting pan with porkchops.

Ive got a OLD hand held hand tater planter. It works kinda like the OLD wood hand held corn planter which I have also, tho ive never used either to plant corn or taters with

I know the ones you're talking about. You used to see them all the time at auctions. I think there might be one or two around here. They work but they don't speed things up to much I think.

My Daughter told me that she found that planting marigold flowers in between or around the mater plants cause less bug damage. he got me a box of seed. I had bought 10 pkgs of it last fall, and it all got rained under

Sounds like that darn rain really set you back. Anything to keep the bugs off them is good!

I had trouble finding Bell pepper plants this year also..i finally managed to find 2 that a friend gave me..i planted some banana peepers to but thy never came up ! every thing else is looking good though !

@@OzziesOddities well probably my potatoes my first batch is waist high or better second batch is 6inches or so & i healed them today covered them completely over ! my beans are looking really good to (Pole beans & bush beans) Wish my corn was a little taller but it looks good if i can keep the coons n cyotes N black birds out until harvest ! what about yours ? having any trouble with tater bugs this year?

Weber built wagons, buggies, ect. Deering bought him/them out and kept using the name as it was a known reliable name in wagons buggies, and, potato planters. JP Morgan got IHC started by consolidating Weber, P&O, and a few other Co.s, I THINK lol

That sounds about right, good job on your history. I'll tell ya this planter is pretty worn but it's a good machine. Did you have any Weber wagons?

I see u slice your taters. I do also, but I see alot of U Tubers who plant whole small taters. I didnt know MMs had direct drfive to the pulley, like my grandads CC Case, or the 50 B JD I had. I hated that when trying to tighten up a belt on my/the buzz saw that was my grandads wedding gift to my dad in 40. I had F-20s and 30s, and later now, this H and I really appreciate that the pulley dosent turn till I want it to.

Sharp eye to notice that about the pulley. I have a potato slicer for slicing up seed potatoes. I should have shown it on the video. Honestly the slicer cuts them a little small and it gave us problems. Seems like everyone has a little different idea about how to plant potatoes. We've tried it a number of different ways and they all seem to work. I think getting them up fairly quick by not planting them too deep helps. Other than that we almost always get a decent crop, but some years we really luck out and fill our basement full. Then we have plenty to share, and we eat potatoes till they come out our ears.

They are out there, but I don't think they are all that common. I did see one sorta similar at a local online auction the other week. So they do turn up but I think you might have to watch the auctions and farm sales maybe for a couple years for one to turn up.

Are the certified seed it looks like the have one eye takes 4 eyes for a crop... i want to see the video when you dig them up...

Thanks for the comment. This one batch of seed got a little more dried and shriveled than we usually let happen but I think it will be ok. We certainly intend to make a digging video, and I promise I'll post the video even if it's a flop. If it's a flop, and I remember, I'll even mention your name. Why do you have those cans around your plants???

It's supposed to keep the small critters out. When they are still shiny, the cans are supposed to repel birds. When the plant gets a little bigger it can lean on the can for some support before it gets big enough for a wire tomato cage. I can't prove it's highly effective for any of those purposes but it seems to work so we've stuck with it. It's pretty common to see coffee cans around young bedding plants around here, just an old tradition I guess.
