I started doing this last year! Two things I’ve found, I save money because I don’t have to buy tons of annuals to fill pots and the moles don’t ruin pots!

I am in the Pacific Northwest in Zone 8 and overwinter Sword Ferns, Lady Ferns, and Deer Ferns in containers and hanging baskets very successfully. They make it year to year when other things don’t. The ferns give me a bit of interest in the winter months when I really miss the flowers of summer!😅Thanks for the great content!😊

I have hostas in containers that overwintering well. And I have roses in containers that are super happy. But with the roses, I do pull them into the garage until early spring. Russian Sage has also done fine for me. I forgot one in its nursery pot (set it down in a crowded bed and forgot it wasn't in the ground). It came back...and is now planted properly. I'm in Wisconsin, zone 5. Thanks for all the practical videos you post!

Interesting. I'm zone 4 - last winter I put potted hosta, dianthus, and vinca in my dark unheated garage. Didn't cut anything back and didn't water all winter, and all came back this spring. Encouraged me to find some more perennials to abuse this winter and see how they do 😂

Nice! Hey many hosta are zone 3 n hardy to -20 so u might be able to leave out n in a pot if u double the pot and line with cardboard at planting which I do with all pots now❤ good luck abusing😂

I have a large water fountain that I want to put perennials around in pots cuz it's very hard for me to water. I'm in zone 4b, MN. It would be considered shade on one side and semi shade on the other side of the fountain. What would you suggest please? Also, would any shrubs work in pots? One last question, what do you mean by line with cardboard? Thanks, can't wait to try another one of your experiments 😊

Abusing plants…😂. I’m zone 3 and I wonder if I wrapped pots in insulation and stored them in my unheated garage if that would work. I guess I could just try right?🇨🇦

Sedum does great over wintering in pots for me and makes a great filler. I have 3 different varieties. I’m in NJ zone 7. Also coreopsis Moonbeam does well. Also yellow Evening Primrose. I have also been using thyme as a spiller and has come back nicely! Almost too good- it spills over the edge of the pot all the way to the ground!

We have been growing perennials in pots for years now we only have six pots of annuals on the front windowsills. We have fifty two pots of perennials in the front garden which include Agapanthus, Alstromerias, Alpines, Hebes, Fuchsias, Parahebes, Lilies, Daylilies, Calla lilies, Ice plants, Salvias, Sempervivums, Sedums, Phygelius and Hostas. We bring the Agapanthus, Salvias, phygelius and Ice plants into a glasshouse over winter. We feed all our perennials and annuals with tomato food during the summer. We use copper tape around the pots and that keeps the slugs away, also most of our pots are glazed which keeps the moisture longer than terracotta pots.

I'm also in zone 5a. I have had success overwintering most of my Stonecrop Sedums, Daylilies, a lace cap hydrangea, and chives. No luck with echinaceas. Autumn Joy Sedum is TOUGH.

Hi Corey, I’m zone 3 so obviously overwintering pots is out for me, but I still learn when I watch you! Question…I stop fertilizing perennials at the end of July, do you think that’s too early, should I also go to the end of August? 🇨🇦🌸👏

I often don’t give my perennials more than one round fertilizer per season (I just don’t get to it). If they are growing well, I wouldn’t change a thing.

I plant all of my heucheras in pots..there is one that has been in a pot on my front porch for 10 years and still going strong although I've forgotton or misplaced the name of it. Roses do okay for about 2 to 3 years in pots for me. Bee balm has lasted at least 4 years in a whiskey barrel and has spread all around the edges which i thought interesting. Gaillardia has been potted for 3 years now but one died this past winter. None of the lilies in pots ever came back for me. Once I put a hardy hibiscus in a large container and it lived thru only one winter. It will be interesting to see which of yours makes it thru. I'm in 6b central Ohio. I also just leave my pots where they were placed during the summer, could be why some plants didn't make it.

Last year I bought 2 peonies in pots from Home Depot. One pink, one white. Watered and placed them in a sunny location. Nothing happened. 😥 Put them in the basement for the winter before the first frost and left them alone. Imagine my surprise to see growth in April on the pink one. Brought both back outside and actually got a pink bloom this May. Haven't given up hope on the white one. Maybe one more year in the basement might do the trick 🤞 If not, I will just buy another white Peony to fill the pot. I live in zone 6a

I have had tall phlox n woodland phlox and hydrangea in pots for 5 years.... I need to put them all in ground and start over with new ones next Spring ... they all are amazing still but they deserve to sprawl! I am 7b Maryland. I line ALL pots with cardboard to insulate, hold moisture and feed worms n get rid of cardboard. WHen I lived in 6a I would stack empty pots double n triple n then put the perennial pot on top to help insulate plants not hardy in my zone.
