My mom (and I) left a bad situation at one point in my childhood. I remember one of the things she was saddest to leave behind was leaving her lilies that she had custom ordered over time and had a whole swath of the garden dedicated to. Luckily she was able to contact the new owner of that house several years later and split and replanted them in her new home - more tears ensued.

My mom died in 2012. I had many things to take care of after that, including selling her home. At 7:00 pm, the night before the homebuyers were to take possession of the home, I remembered my mom's beautiful lilies. I drove to the house with a few shovels and a truck bed full of pots and spent the next 6 hours digging them up. I took them all back to my own home and spent the entire night replanting them all using a spotlight for light. Over the years, those lilies of my Mom's have multiplied and they will always be the most prized and loved flowers in my garden. 💓

My wonderful little neighbor, who's 84, bought me my first Canna Lilly Cleopatra. I have a special pot for it and have it growing on my front porch so he can see it from his porch as well. Nearly made me cry! Warms my heart each time I see it. He's unable to garden any longer but has several cannas all around his porch and they are gorgeous.

Last year, I bought an Asiatic Lily & potted it. I've learned a lot about flowers in the past year, but at the time I didn't even know it would come back! I left the pot outside all winter & this spring 21 lilies came back from that one plant! I put them in the ground pretty late this spring (they already had buds), so I didn't know what to expect. Now, they've all bloomed, except for one tiny one that didn't root & I'm so excited to see how many come up in the ground next spring! ❤️🥰

Yes, the “lilies” Laura inherited are Hemerocallis commonly called daylilies, not a true lily that’s planted as a bulb but instead as rhizomes. In the Midwest, where I live, that particular orange daylily grows on most farms, in the wild, and in roadside ditches…….so much so that they’re known as ditch lilies. There are hundreds of daylily/Hemerocallis cultivars in a variety of yellows, pinks, reds, and purples extremely popular throughout the Midwest since they grow just about anywhere and most always look good. Laura’s orange Hemerocallis (“daylily, Tiger Lily, ditch lily”) gets little respect from so many gardeners in our area that it made me smile when I saw how much she loved her inherited “lilies”, and it reminded me that beauty is truly in the eyes of the beholder. I love that there’s always something to learn about gardening……Thank you, Laura for teaching me about so many beautiful varieties of plants I knew nothing about before I started watching you!

We have orange daylilies in Connecticut also. Almost every other house has some on the property. Around a mailbox/stump, on the side of the road, near the rock walls. Can just take a ride around the neighborhood and see them in bloom now. Kind of a tradition to have some now.😀

I planted them from bits by the railroad when my kids were small and I was broke-then I fell in love with them. I have literally thousands of them. I use them to edge the property and border large planting areas. I like the leaves, too. When they bloom: DRAMA! People stop to admire. It takes several days to go through and deadhead after the show. And they need lots of water to stay green.

They’re not lilies of the genus Lilium, like the Asiatic and Oriental ones. They’re daylilies, genus Hemerocallis. The ditch lilies are also known as tawny daylilies. I have some in a poor-soil bed and appreciate that they’ll grow there, but I do have to keep reining them in.

I bought 2 of the cleopatra canna I loved the 2 tone variegated leaves, they put off the most unique and beautiful flowers I have seen. When I purchased the plants they were in 8 inch nursery pots and ofcourse the label only said canna so had no idea what they were actually called until you just told me lol thank you! I will definitely buy more next year because next to the more basic cala I have planted these 2 stick out and catch your eye right off the bat with the beautiful leaves and striking flowers, now if I can just keep the grasshoppers from devouring them!

My mother called the orange lilies Tiger Lilies. She was from Detroit; and here in Indiana they call them ditch lilies cause they are in all the rural road ditches.

Laura thanks for allowing me to be less than! When you talked in earlier videos about certain plants and bulbs being now hard to find and here I had 50 dahlias sitting in two boxes from Eden Bros and Longfields in my kitchen. They were torn open and watered a couple of times but weather and other commitments kept me from planting them for weeks! Most had growth points when I did planted them about ten days ago but I've felt so quilty!! Fortunately one by one they have broken ground and whether they actually bloom is uncertain but thanks for telling me it's ok if I don't do it right sometimes!!

It's reassuring when the garden expert is still planting bulbs/corms as late (or later) than I. I potted some lilies earlier in spring and finally got them in the ground. The tiger lilies (orange?! In MY garden?) are getting ready to bloom. The white Oriental (Casa Blanca, I think) is still in the pot, but looks healthy. I still had bulbs in the bags and finished planting them a week or so ago. I don't expect much this year (and especially after the roofers trampled on them), but I'm hoping they'll know what to do and give me a show next year. Since I'm new to planting lily bulbs (I've grown nursery plants) I researched and read not to bury the green growth pushing out from the corm or they could rot. I hope I did the right thing by planting them so shallow. Sure made it easy planting in the ground. Less soil digging. For those wondering, I have a tip to know which blooms first, Asiatic or Oriental. Think alphabetically. Asiatic bloom first then Oriental later in summer. Laura, I, too, planted some glad corms that were questionable. There were 8 in the bag, but only 3 had signs of growth. The rest were sort of papery sacks. I just threw them in the pot all together and am hoping for the best. Probably should have added some Bio-tone to help them. Sometimes, figuring out where to plant things can be the cause for delay and failure. I wish I would have thought earlier to plant the glads in a pot a while ago.
