I'd highly recommend adding sunflowers (which are the forgotten "4th sister") and amaranth, either the kind that's for greens or the other kinds that are for grain, depending on what you want. Amaranth isn't traditional, but it grows great with corn, so I use it as my bonus "5th sister".

Really glad you brought this up about the sunflower thing. Often forgotten 4th sister. As for your comment on amaranth, there was an indigenous chenopod that is Of the same genus as Latin American amaranth that was domesticated in North America before corn became widely grown in the late woodland period

@@sykotikmommy Generally, I believe, along the outer perimeter of your bed. The sunflowers serve as "catch crops", meaning that they "catch" insects by drawing them away from eating your veggies. In theory, critters will munch on the sunflowers instead of your crops.

Just some interesting info: Your mentioned the circle with 4 corners. That is actually the Medicine Wheel that is present in many Native American cultures. The 4 corners refer to the 4 (compass) directions. It's neat that you brought that into your 3-sisters planting without even knowing it was also Native American! BLESSINGS!

You’re correct about being able to see purple beans versus green beans. But I don’t know if Indians were picking beans prior to total ripening? I think, but don’t know for certain, they let the beans ripen, and then dried the beans for winter food? One summer, I grew both sweet corn and Indian corn with my kids. After the corn gained about 5’-6’, a torrential rain came blowing through with strong winds to boot. All of the corn was blown flat. I couldn’t get to the garden for a couple of days because of work schedule. Then, I picked up the sweet corn, mudded up the roots, and it recovered. In the meantime, the Indian corn picked itself up! Since then, I have talked to other gardeners who had similar experience.. Courtesy of Half Vast Flying

Great video! I have never heard of this method but love the idea. I have given up on growing corn. The squirrels here think my yard and garden are their personal Disneyland and they really love the corn. Two years ago they became so brazen they would come in through the picket fence we had around the garden, tear off an ear of corn right by where I stood and then haul it back through the fence and have a feast! It was a losing battle. Haven’t grown corn since 😫. So nice to have you back!! ❤️

Thanks, Brian!! In my first in-ground raised bed garden ages ago, I successfully grew corn. It had to be supported, but it worked! I inserted a panel of lightweight 4"x4" fencing over them, parallel to the ground after they were well established - probably half their expected height. The corn continued to grow through it successfully and braced each other. At that time, I didn't add beans or corn. This year, I have a 4x4 square that I can use, and I am going to give the three sisters method a go! I don't think I will use the fencing because of the beans, but I might start the corn in small tomato cages instead for that additional support. Oops, I just realized I am thinking out loud in my comment. Thanks again for all your tips and inspiration!

So frustrating 😫 😑 and I've been growing in fabric containers, because there are restrictions on what we are allowed to do, where I live now suck. However, I found land to park my RV and the land owner is cool with it. I'll be able to grow in the ground. I'm so excited and moving March 1st. Yay! Happy gardening fellow San Diego.

Question: I'm growing zucchini in a half-barrel whiskey planter, and I was thinking of growing a couple of pole beans (1 or 2 plants) behind it in the same planter. I'd trellis the beans and make sure they're behind the zucchini, so that there's no shade. Do you think there's enough space for that? The container is a 35-40 gallon container, and has a diameter of 26 inches. I have excellent soil with tons of vermicompost and a lot of good little insects living in it (mainly potato bugs, but I did notice a few little worms!). I LOVE your channel, and I'm so glad you're putting out these videos! It's made me a much more confident gardener, and I am so thankful for that!

Beware of cross pollination my friend! I have learned the hard way to pick one type of squash (don’t mix melons and pumpkins) and one tripe of corn. Like popcorn, dent, or sweet, but not a variety. Pump-melons are only yummy to squirrels, and same for popcorn that doesn’t pop or hard sweet corn.

My first time at trying 3 sisters. I feel like I got them in the ground a little late. But im looking at this as a learning experience too. Im using a large container. Its probaly to deep. Its an old horse food container. I also germinated my corn to give it a head start. I so wish that i had used the paper containers. I had to take mine out. So im a little worried about the root having been disturbed. I prob planted too many. And I didnt plant 2 beans or squash to a hole. I used compost that Ive been feeding for since last fall. After planting i added a diluted liquid miracle grow.

Grate! I this method. I have a tomato question. Is there anything that is a preventive for curly leafy virus? I know that nothing works when it is there but what about before it is their. Half of my tomato plants were infected. Thankfully I have a long growing season and can plant again but I do not want to have the same thing happen again. Any ideas?

How does the squash preserve moisture for corn and beans when it isn’t planted by them? I’m new at this so I don’t understand.

Started my tomatoes on strings and they looked great till yesterday when noticed stems getting brown and shrinking from ground up... I did use cranberry mulch near but not on tomatoes to retain moisture...and ideas to save plants? Tx

Sounds like they've been too wet, and if they're already getting brown and shrinking at the start of the stem, it may be too late. If you think they might be over-watered, your safest bet is probably to start over with new seedlings.

Is the Neptune's harvest tomato and veg a liquid or powder formula? Do you prefer the crab & lobster/ kelp in powder over liquid?

The kelp meal and crab and lobster are granular that I use in the hole at planting time. I use the tomato and veg liquid for the rest of the season

Can you trade out the squash for another plant? Melons? Potatoes?

Corn needs to be planted in a block for sufficient pollination. If you just plant a few plants, you'll get incomplete ears, not filled with kernels.
