    We started planting trees in memory of family members who had passed. Then at the request of our children we started planting a tree of their choosing for them. Now, when they visit they often remark about how big their tree is. When our first grandchild arrives this coming year, he will learn about the family trees and the stories that go with them. It is better than a scrapbook.

    We had 38 oak trees on our property. They were about 250 years old. I never grew tired of sitting under the mighty oak canopy and thinking about all they’ve seen. We also had the pleasure of watching a great horned owl raise her baby and watched her teach it to fly.

The boxwoods were little babies and there was only a couple of things in that bed. I truly hope GA is still making videos in 10 yrs so we can all look back and see how far they’ve come! It’s a pleasure to be taken along for the ride! Have a great weekend everybody!!

    You know your family’s life is really the epitome of how our country was for so many generations. You are all home, working the land. Both parents are able to be home with children and so they grow up working and playing with both parents. They learn a great work ethic and a love of the land. They learn charity as they see you gift the children’s hospital. Etc. You have other family nearby , your parents, siblings, cousins, nieces and nephews. You live in a smallish town where you run into people you know and even went to school with when you go to town. It is a great life. When you talk about moving to a different location sometimes, you don’t realize what it is like to not know anyone. You never walk into a store and run into an old friend or come home to find a sister or brother already at your house to greet you I’m glad you seem to have decided this is the right place to be.

And when he asked - Is this the acorn tree? I also have an acorn tree in the back of my (tiny in comparison @ just one acre) property. I will think of it as an acorn tree from now on. 🌳❤️

    Aaron is NOT wrong!😄 My certified arborist told me to never put any soil on the top of the root ball, and anything you mulch with should contain only composted tree parts, and even that should never be placed up against the trunk. My horticulture classes taught me to plant with the top of the root ball level with the soil (including mulch), and only backfill up to the sides of the root ball, never on top of it. The trees sure do add a lot of beauty to that space!

  • @saras9840

    @saras9840

    Agree with you, but Aaron is planting way above level with the existing soil and then levelling up with the mulch. Won’t dry mulch sap the top few inches of the root ball. The native soil appears to be very dry so any irrigation malfunction may be disastrous…

  • @MarylineMallet

    @MarylineMallet

    @@saras9840this is what I have red too… he should mount (cover the roots in a pyramid shape with top soil, not mulch :s ). Then he can put the mulch. What i’ve red is that mulch/compost does not retain enough moisture for the upper roots which are important for the tree. Mulch and compost are not the same as top soil…. I do hope they do okay!

  • @lauriespiker5952

    @lauriespiker5952

    9 ай бұрын

    @@saras9840 It looks like he's planting them only a couple of inches above the existing soil level, which is good foresight if he expects the eventual surrounding soil level to be a little higher than it is. The only problem I see is covering the top of the root ball with soil -- the backfill should only be brought up next to the sides of the rootball, not on top of it.

    You know what I love so much about watching Laura & Aaron plant these trees is knowing that when Laura talks about a tree getting 50+feet high you know that won’t be for at least 15-20 years (depending on the tree). So they’re not really planting for them to enjoy anytime soon. They’re planting for their golden years, their kids future, etc. Sometimes it feels like gardening is a really selfless way to spend your time on earth. All your hard work and love is going into a future you might not be around to enjoy but you know as a gardener that someone sometime in the future is going to love what you’ve created and think about the people who created it (even if they don’t know who they were). It gets me teary eyed.

    I have to pull up small ones all the time growing in flower beds and it's constant thru out the spring and summer. One was hidden on the center of a shrub,it had gotten about a foot tall when I noticed the different leaf shape and knew exactly what it was. It had rooted in pretty good and was hard to get out. Most times I catch them small,and the acorn is still attached. But at least they're far from the house here and won't be a mess. Love the shade,but keeps me busy picking up limbs and leaves.

    I hope you do drifts of annuals again next year. They added such a wonderful pop of color in the garden. I love the amethyst verbena.

    I think you need to put in a running trail loop on the property for Benjamin for when he decides to train for a marathon!

    Laura and Aaron can never move with all the plantings and work they've done. But, they can buy a 2nd property in the mountains and Aaron will have his tons of huge trees. ❤

    watching the two of you differ on how high to plant the trees totally made me giggle this morning! Have you guys considered adding a salt water softener system on your well for irrigation to keep your drip from clogging and having to replace so often? We will in Florida where the water is very hard and have installed a system and it has made a world of difference. Always love watching, you are the reason my garden is as beautiful as it is!

    I just love Samantha's sweet little, "Night." I know you play the piano, Laura, but do you sing also? I don't remember. Samantha's little "night" was almost in a singing voice and sounded so sweet, wonder if she inherited from you.

    You guys should definitely plant a “row” of redbuds in front of the thick “wild area” in the back. My parents have redbuds that line their entire property and nothing is prettier in the spring than seeing all these beautiful pink/violets buds when nothing else is really growing yet

    Wow!!!! I am so excited for you and Aaron with this new property. How exciting to do fall projects with the kids where you can take those beautiful leaves and press them in books to make artwork . I would love to have all those different trees where I live, but that's not possible. You guys are so wonderful. Thank you for doing what you're doing.
