Planning, lofting and dreaming (Ep.1) Two Blokes Build a Boat
Join us as we figure out how to build a traditional clinker wooden boat. We look at the history of the Morgan Giles dinghy and set off in the pouring winter rain to get some wood. We start the lofting and making the moulds and dream about adventures to the other side of the River Exe.

Just caught up with Leo's epic rebuilding, 190+ episodes in 3-weeks. Now it's your turn to fill my evenings whilst travelling the Trent & Mersey in my steel NB. I'm thoroughly looking forward to this journey! Thank you.
I subscribed 2 minutes in. Can't wait to see this series. Nothing I want more than to watch two blokes build a boat.

Hi loved watching your peace and enjoyed it entirely, thankyou. what a beautiful place you have to work and live.
Hello. Just been recommended your chanel through a friend of my wife who is an historian specialising in Teignmouth. I am by trade a wooden boat builder and will very much enjoy following your journey building that lovely dinghy from that most famous of yards. All the best.

Really well filmed and edited. There's a certain fascination with wooden yachts and the stories that live through them. So glad that you've captured that spirt and made it available to share.

I am very happy to have found your youtube site! I have been hooked on the Tally Ho journey with Leo Sampson, now to enjoy your journey with the Morgan Giles dinghy. I have got plans for François Vivier's Ilur “classic” and will start building soon... Just need to convince my wife the boat is more important than the house :)
love the camaraderie that goes on in the work shop. wish I could be there with you.Keep up the good work. Cant wait to see the next one.

This has to be the best boat building channels on YT (and I have watched quite a few). I love the pace, the filming, the editing, the music but most of all the dialogue. Its really about life rather the about boat building, for example, when you talk about how a vague idea on the back of an envelope suddenly turns into concrete plans with materials suddenly arriving and you know you are committed to the project. I think we all know that feeling whatever the project. Cannot wait to see lots more. Thanks you for making the videos.

A yachting mate pointed me at this last week and I have been binge watching since. Very absorbing and lovely to relax and watch. I can see the Morgan Giles slipway across the water from home. Any idea when you are going to launch? I would so love to be there, and send some pics to my buddy. Star Cross is not so far. I will wear my ancient Norgie jumper in honour.

I love the gentle laid-back nature of the video. I'll admit to hovering over the "X" in the top right hand corner of my screen when the video started, in case it was by an over-excited American, and was much relieved when it wasn't.

Really nice format for this series from discovering the old plans in a museum to the drive up to the sawmill and selecting the timber for the keel. This is so much more real than the numerous youtube time-lapse or speeded up videos on similar subjects. The music, the interview, the lofting are all such a great part of this, please keep the format and show us as much as possible at every stage, the ups and downs we all get in any project.

I landed here after watching Ep.2. So pleased at watching the concept develop, the design and build, and how well done the video editing is! History mixed with building what's not to like. I have just had a Catboat built by a boat building school in France unfortunately they didn't have the time to totally finish her. So now I am working on her hoping to sail in the spring. My boat was lofted from some very old plans so an old boat lives again. On another channel you send in photos of your boat build and they are posted at the end maybe a good idea for you. I have subscribed and will watch your build and hopefully see you sail next year. Good Luck

Lovely video. I look forward to following along. Did you just butt the plywood together to make your lofting board?
@jonsealwoodturning4673
8 ай бұрын
Thanks. Pretty much it was held together by a couple of 2x1battens at the top and bottom. The floor on which the plywood was rested was pretty flat. We used 18 mm plywood but actually that's a bit oo heavy and it made it difficult later on moving the boards around.
Liked the historical parts. I'd like to know a bit more about your past, how you learned etc. I wish my lofting had gone as fast as that. It took me nearly 6 months to lay down my lines and make forms. Very good start guys.
