£1 Yacht Needs Everything!! (Part 5)

In part 5 of our £1 yacht restoration series, we meticulously remove deck fittings, ensuring every detail is tended to with care. Sanding becomes meditative as we strive for perfection, doing laps around the boat. The application of epoxy becomes an art form, as we fill and repair imperfections in the gelcoat. A warm welcome to Claire, who generously dedicates her day off work to lend a hand, infusing the project with fresh energy and camaraderie. Together, we're not just restoring a yacht; we're crafting a story of passion, dedication, and teamwork.⛵️

Your wife was a great help from what I could see. When I have an apprentice with me, I can usually judge how could they will be by how often I have to ask them to pass me a tool I need next, in a maintenance job or repair job. I do ask them to try and anticipate what tool I need next. (not saying she's your apprentice)

Just in case you didn't know..which you probably do but this will increase the analytics. Any holes you drill through the deck if it has a core should be over drilled then filled with thickened epoxy first. Then re-drill the smaller hole so your hole is sheathed in epoxy. Or at least epoxy the sides of the hole (not as good). The parts of the boat you epoxied should have a barrier coat put on it. And finally if it were my boat I'd consider putting a Samson post at the bow instead of a cleat. You're doing a great job, loving these videos.

I was wondering when you would take off all the fittings instead of trying to sand around them. I would take off the stainless railings too. Also, I've got a theory about that paint blocking up your sanding disks. It seems it is a water-based latex paint which just melts when you sand. Have you tried a good paint stripper, get most of it off and then sand the underlying gelcoat smooth

It could have been decorators caulking instead of putty normally used for covering cracks in plaster in the corner of a room. It stays soft without cracking and can be painted over. Once you are down to the original none slip surface that I can see at 4.14 mins of your video you're almost there ready for painting, but it's no race just a bit at a time will get you there. It seems there's no end to the bodge jobs and I can honestly say I found many in my house when I bought it 40 yrs ago and back then it was only 4 yrs old.

Think your wasting time trying to sand, either use a wire knot wheel, or a paint removal disc and an angle grinder. will cut through quicker. it may rough the surface up but you may be able to get some sort of high build epoxy paint.

I know epoxy is expensive, but when including the cost of your your labour isn't it actually cheaper to wirebrush then thick epoxy at least some of the worst areas to give a smooth surface to paint/gelcoat rather than sand them down to smooth? i.e. in a house, if you had a rough wall with dodgy plaster from removing wallpaper you wouldn't bother sanding it down, you'd just skim it as it's actually quicker and less messy.

@@BoatzUK i'll hold you to that lol. i want a small sailboat like that so i can replace the regular companionway with a completely water and air tight hatch, and do similar with the portholes. then i would add in a couple of special cowls for ventilation. these would be built with a large S bend with a drain so that they would not let water in even during a roll over. i think a small boat with these type of mods would be capable of safely crossing the Pacific, or any other body of water. plus being able to trailer it, and pay basically nothing for haul outs or marina fees when you need to do work, would be awesome
