it's no court of the crimson king in terms of recognizable, but i see the theme you went with and for how simple it is, it gives you a perfect idea of what to expect in terms of music, Crimson King just tells you "don't do acid and stare at me."

Such a U.K. Vibe about this. If you like this, check out the U.K. tracks on here to get a feel where some of this has come from. Bruford , Johnson and Whetton had invented some of this stuff.

I don't agree. Are you not confusing Jobson with the Johnson you mentioned? I'm not a UK fan myself but as far as I know John Wetton and UK became very differently oriented musical sources, with a commercial taste more than any other, in my opinion. Had Wetton left instead of Bruford, there could be a way to find an influence on this. That would be hypothetically a fit for UK as you propossed, a bit stretched I'd say.

Peter Garner, I think I know what made you say that UK 'invented' some of this, you must be thinking of some of the Ignotus per Ignotium track, which isn't too hard to get an idea of what that title means. No offense.

the style is very similar. it is amazing to hear allan holdsworth's guitar solos with a tony mcalpine playing style. I'm sure U.K is one of the main influences on planet x, and I don't know why it's never been mentioned.

The first minute or so of Micronesia is exactly what it feels like when you're getting into the zone. First you're just enjoying the initial feeling of noticing that everything is seemingly happening automatically. Then you start to enjoy the rhythmic nature of it. Eventually, you start to get silly just because you know you can, for as long as it may last.

Ahead of their time that's for sure. Still the world isn't ready for fusion music of this kind as it challenges the listener too much still with its rythmic compositions. Harmonic it is digestible but rhythmically it is sophisticated to the point of the listener needing basic rhythmic knowledge to be able to enjoy the concepts employed by the musicians in the parts they play. I don't say this with a sense of "superiority" but like bebop jazz before it this is better enjoyed by listeners with a preference and expectation rather than a listener with a certain: entertain me attitude. The active listener more likely to enjoy this, the passive listener not at all. case in point, play this to your casual music listening friends. Illicit a reaction that is explained. Satisfied with the answer? You won't be, but you on the other hand will explain exactly what you like or dislike about their music. They won't do the same for yours though... Am I mistaken though?

As a fusion musician this was way ahead of what I could play at the time. My ears developed quicker than my playing though and I can imagine this is also accessible to non musicians who just listen to a lot of music.

If the band members weren't mentioned in the description above, I would swear that Planet X were an '80s superband comprised of: Vince Dicola - keyboard Allan Holdsworth - guitar Mark Edwards (on lots of caffeine) - drums Bravo to Planet X for keeping the classic prog/fusion/metal sound alive.
