The Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean was the flagship dive watch of Omega's range before the 2018 Seamaster Diver 300M arrived at Baselworld. Now faced with an in-house rival, the 39.5mm Planet Ocean toes the line against a revitalized 25th anniversary "James Bond" Seamaster Diver 300M.
The 39.5mm Seamaster Planet Ocean arrived at Baselworld 2016. Easily the more wearable watch compared to its 43.5mm Planet Ocean Master Chronometer running mate, the 39.5mm Omega SMP also feels like the natural watch to compare to Omega's own 42mm Diver 300M
On the wrist the Planet Ocean is thicker but shorter across the wrist. Its gloss dial and white gold hands and indices speak to the money invested; by a considerable margin, the 600-meter water resistant Planet Ocean offers superior dive bezel knurling.
The Planet Ocean dial is composed of polished blue ceramic, and its tri-Arabic numeral aesthetic is a stark contrast with the Diver 300M. By night, the Omega Planet Ocean 39.5mm also offers a distinct -- and superior -- glowing readout.
A hybrid alligator leather and rubber strap combines with a trigger-release folding buckle (deployant clasp) to surpass the quality and features of the Diver 300M's pin buckle and rubber strap.
The Omega Seamaster Professional Diver 300M launched in 1993, soared to fame on the wrist of Pierce Brosnan as James Bond, Agent 007, and endured with only small design refinements for 25 years. That fact makes the Diver 300M the most enduring Omega Seamaster design since the line's launch in 1948.
Omega upgrades its Bond watch for 2018 with a new 42mm case, a ceramic dial with laser-etched waves, a sapphire display caseback, and a new caliber 8800 Master Chronometer movement.
Omega's 41mm entry level dive watch has become a 42mm, and it continues to sport the same shape made famous by countless Omega Speedmaster and Seamaster models since the mid-1960s. the famed (and fatuous) helium escape valve (gas release valve) has been re-profiled with a conical shape, and the device now can be opened while still engaged in a dive.
The dial of the new Omega Seamaster is crafted from ceramic. This example includes a ceramic base with a dramatic chrome-plated face that reflects light and contrasts sharply with the laser-etched "waves" of the dial fave. The date display moves from three o'clock to six o'clock, and the signature "Bond" skeleton hands remain with only subtle modifications.
Both Planet Ocean and Diver 300M employ the Omega Master Chronometer caliber 8800 automatic movement. It features a 55-hour power reserve, stop seconds (hacking), a quickset date, and a silicon hairspring for 15,000 gauss+ antimagnetism. The balance is free sprung and mounted on a full bridge for shock resistance.
Omega's 35-jewel caliber meets and exceeds the COSC standards for a Swiss chronometer. The "METAS" master chronometer test involves six-position testing of the caliber as part of an 8-step battery of evaluations. The test involves the fully-cased watch rather than the COSC's bare movement test. Water resistance, magnetic resistance, and power reserve also are evaluated.
The Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean 600m (215.33.40.20.03.001) features a 39.5mm stainless steel case surrounding a blue dial on a blue rubberized alligator strap with a stainless steel deployant buckle. Functions include hours, minutes, seconds, date and helium release valve. The watch also measures 14.3mm in thickness and 45.2mm from lug-to-lug.
The Omega Seamaster Professional Diver 300m (210.32.42.20.06.001) is encased in 42mm of stainless steel surrounding a grey wave dial on a blue rubber strap. Functions include hours, minutes, seconds, date, and helium release valve. The watch also measures 13.8mm in thickness and 50mm from lug-to-lug.

Beautiful watches, who could choose and you can't go wrong with either one. Very special timepieces. Thanks for your detailed and quick review.
Very informative review. Thank you!
Omega should have went with a bright white font for the date window on the brushed chrome dial Seamaster Diver 300M. You can hardly see it. It looks like the 6 o'clock indice fell out of the dial.
Beautiful Omega watches. I admit to being partial to the larger watch with the wave dial face and the pearl markers for the dial markers. I like the metal band with the gold inserts. I think this watch is by far one of the best lookimg sports/dive watches out there.I would love to add one to my collection.
I tried both the new 300 and the PO 43.5. Even though I have small wrists the design of the PO lugs and bracelet links allows it to sit on my wrist perfectly and it has great presence. The bezel of the PO is far superior, the 300 bezel is hard to turn and in my opinion not a proper dive bezel. Bought the PO and find it a superb watch.

Congrats on the new watch...I picked mine up last week, and I notice that the minute markers on bezel starting from the 12:00 pip through the 10 min markers Are uneven. They start lining up at the 15 min marker. Do yours line up?

@@eflo8264It could be a visual illusion. This often happens with chronograph second hands on reset...because of our stereo-vision. Close one eye and assess the alignment. The one I have is aligned perfectly.
I never have used, nor likely ever will use, the bezel timer for diving...BUT! I use them for timing EVERYTHING from cooking, to exercise, to travel times locally...there is no problem with turning the 300M bezel old or new...wet or dry. You really have to be a klutz not to be able to use the 300M bezel. The PO is easier to grip, but I have to concentrate to note that distinction. Normal people won't notice. The PO lume is VERY bright on mine and lasts all night. I have to wonder how and for how long you "charged" each and how long before you photographed them.
Tim, great comparison and as always great content, I would agree the the 300 would be first on my wrist.

Hi Al, thanks for this kind feedback. The SMP 300M is the easy choice over any Omega diver. Unless you MUST go retro with the 300 Master or actually work in deepwater salvage and want a PloProf, the 25th anniversary Bond is close to mandatory when shopping Omega divers. Best, Tim
I think the nicest Diver 300 is the non-wave black dial, the dial is a high-gloss black, looks incredible! Can’t decide between these two, but maybe think the Diver on a blue rubber strap maybe given it is a rarer colour. Thou if you like the grey but want a taller more chunky 300, look at the ETNZ limited edition...
I have the original PO at 45.5mm and I recently tried on the new 39mm PO. Due to the height I have to say 41mm-42mm is really the sweat spot.
Both are amazing in their own ways. I still think it’s odd to put a leather strap on a dive watch, however. I think I’d go for the bracelet on both.
8:25 Incredibly compelling. The watches and the review. Kudos!
I’ve owned both, sold the PO as much prefer the SM 300, the White dial version of this is a real beauty.
Thanks for the review. I have a 2016 300M, and I think is much more beautiful than the new. For me the waves dont come in, only the movement that I missing. This Planet Ocean is very very nice, maybe the next watch I buy. Sorry for my English.
Hi Tim, how long have Omega used White Gold for Hands and Indices on the planet ocean?
Hi Tim, thanks for the comparison. You mentioned the PO has white gold indices and hands, is that also the case in the earlier generation PO's with the 8500/9300 movements? Thanks!

I have the original 2531. It's clearly related, but the first-run model feels crude compared to the new one. It's the same difference you feel between any given Omega SMP and something like a Longines Conquest or TAG Aquaracer... and possibly even greater than that gap. Best, Tim
Just wondering, why are leather bands not considered waterproof? I mean i get why it's not considered to be water activity strap, but what does the leather do? Does it get smelly, or damaged when it's submerged in water?
hello. where do you measure your wrist size? at the bottom of your wrist (arround/bellow your wrist bone) or where you wear your watches?
Which is the best in build quality? Diver 300 or Planet Ocean?
I went for a used PO with the liquid metal bezel recently and from the moment I put it on I was in love with it. IMHO it has way more going for it than many alternatives. I was worried the strap wouldn't be as durable as a metal band but it is showing no wear at all just like the case and bezel; not a mark on it after wearing it every day. Like most people I'm not crazy about the date but I can live with it and the accuracy is top notch. My scrawny wrists mean that 40mm is my sweet spot and this PO been a great introduction into watches that are a step up in price for me. Excellent comparison video.
Why not compare the original blue dial 300m with this ocean planet , Tim
Great comparison. I notice that on the 300M the 12:00 pip to the 10 minute markers are uneven. I noticed this after taking my new watch home last week . I compared it to my Sub, and much less expensive divers, and they all line up perfectly. Is this a design flaw in the 300m or intentionally left uneven. I can’t unsee it once I noticed it. Anyone else notice this too?

Still waiting for a PO 39.5 vs Sub C Date video :)
Wonder if anyone has ever measured their weights? Which one is lighter? Thanks!

Do they both use the same blue? ......... I think the blues look slightly different but the light was always different on them.
Great comparison, had the new 39.5 PO and eventually flipped it. The time keeping was great with the new movement but I felt it sat way too high on the wrist and consequently wasn’t comfortable. Felt like a hockey puck on the wrist. If they got these down to under 13mm then it would be a different story.

Is liquid metal, better than enamel on a bezel ?
I owned a midsize seamaster 300 from 2000-2015 and I'm in the market for a replacement. I was thrilled with the look of the new 300 until I saw one in the flesh, I can't put my finger on it, it just doesn't wow me. The Planet Ocean on the other hand just oozes quality. Despite the extra cost it would be the 600 for me.

Have a 2500 series PO-full Orange. Love it. Rock solid time keeping. The bezel faded a bit which makes me sad. The new Seamaster w wave dial looks awesome. Sure beats that sad ass Seamaster they put on Bond last time.
Great review Tim. Recently visited my local AD and tried on the SMP and the 43.5mm PO to try and decide between the two models. Both sit similarly on the wrist (with the PO noticeably taller). Though not a problem for me on my 7.5” wrist, the bling factor of the PO just didn’t sit right with me. Just a bit too shiny for a “tool watch “. I wish they made the the PO closer to the fit and finish of the original 2500 or even the 8500 movement, with a brushed ceramic bezel and perhaps a bit slimmer profile. Although I prefer the case and bracelet of the PO, I feel because of its shiny exterior, and its height for most people, I feel the current SMP model will fare better in the future. So if I had to choose today, I’d probably go SMP in black on a bracelet. (The look with the rubber is actually really nice also, just wish it was with a deployant. Cheers.

Interesting that the 39mm gets more air time than the 43.5 PO. Is that because buyers retain the 43 and buyers of the 39 regret not going large and sell? I love my blue 43.5, but also love my old SM120. I could keep them both and get the two tone SMP300 on rubber. Now that’s a nice contrast in the collection.

Thus the PO have nicer elements like the Omega logo, white gold hands and nunerals that fit perfectly with the dial, I choose the SMP 300 (not being influenced by the price, few bucks are not being considered) I find the design of the Diver 300 much more appealing and fresh. The grey dial (which James Bond will present I the next movie) is not the best. The Blue one with brazalete and/or with Sedna gold with blue rubber put the Diver 300 light years away from PO or Submariner, in terms of watch presence and aesthetics... The PO looks very old timer, very 1950’s. But in personal tastes, the most important is your own choose. Considering both have the same caliber also, is a no brainer go for the SMP 300
I went to my AD with full intentions of getting either the PO 39.5mm or the 57’ heritage and ended up pulling on the SMP 300m white dial. Once I tried all of them on the PO and 57’ heritage sat too tall on my wrist. The diver’s bracelet was actually better than I initially thought it would be also. At the end of the day it was the most comfortable and looked best on my wrist. Can’t speak for others obviously.

I like the old POs.
It’s odd, but as a Seamaster fan-boy, I fully expected to love the new 300, but there’s something about it that just ‘jars’ with me. I’m not a fan of the conical escape valve but more importantly there just seems something wrong to me with the relative proportions. I’m not sure why, but it could be the wave dial. I prefer the more subtle wave of the earlier models and in particular I think this new design, being more pronounced and with a longer wavelength has the effect of making the watch seem broader than it actually may be - a bit like ‘stripes make you look thin, hoops make you look fat’. Have to say however that I haven’t seen it in the flesh yet, so this could just be a function of videos and pictures, so reserve the right to change my mind and fall in love. Another great video, thanks Tim.

I'm working on that. A separate department from my one-man shop inserts those ads, and I'm going to request that they be withheld from these comparisons. For single-watch videos, I just try to move the watch around where I expect the cards to be. Best, Tim

He's referring to advertisement cards at the very end of the videos. Best, Tim

@@the1916companywatchreviews Ok. Now I understand that. Thanks so much for your help.
PO has uncomfortably big crown with sharp edge. Imho, the older version of one looks better. SM has cheap looking and big He valve with unpretty gap. Older SM's rubber strap is nicer. I don't understand, why Omega doesn't offer also solid stainless steel back.

The option for a solid back would be nice, and would knock some thickness off the watch.
04:30 wait! the 8800 has no twin barrel!
300m
I was never much of an Omega fan until I saw the new Seamaster. I got the blue dial model. It's clearly a beautifully finished watch. The face, bezel and case are nearly flawless. Better than a Panerai and nicer than a Submariner although it's hard to compete with the iconic and highly distinctive Panerai look. The movement is truly exceptional even if it's not finished as well as my Nomos watches. Overall, a great timepiece.
Having both 300m is much comfortable than PO But PO looks more expensive than 300
Are these movements ETA based?

I really want to like the diver 300m, because it's impressive in every regard. Unfortunately the dial and bezel combo is just a tad bit too busy for my taste; i'll wait for the planet ocean update and come back to this comparison :)

We agree; the SMP '25 is hard to beat! Best, Tim
The Seamaster is a great watch but I really don’t like the skeleton hands, I much prefer sword hands for more legible reading on my watches.
So you want the best of these two watches? Get the previous generation diver 300m :D
